This is a book meant to inspire debate, reflection, and action about the ways in which the United States is rapidly losing its economic, diplomatic, and moral standing in the world. According to Luce, step one is to lose the denial and actually understand what's going on. No prescriptions here, but much food for thought. I recommend it. #ReadOutsideTheLines

Pickpick

If you want a companion to Hillbilly Elegy that actually delves into the history of class distinctions in America --and especially the systemic prejudice against poor whites-- this book is for you. I learned a lot and want to learn even more about the historical causes that explain, at least in part, both the alt-right and the fervor of Trump supporters. I continue on my quest for understanding and empathy. #ReadOutsideTheLines

MayJasper I admire your efforts to understand (too strong?) the points of view of others, something I've been grappling with since 52 per cent of my fellow citizens voted to leave the European Union. 8y

alanacristin Oh this made my stomach drop 😣 maybe share the highlights with us? Don't think I'm traveling down these roads soon. 8y
tracyrowanreads Much of my reading has become serious, even dark, since the election. 8y
Cortg Good for you! That would be tough but, good. I don't think I could do it. 8y
saresmoore Ugh. I am impressed by your resolve. This really is a lot! 8y
AmyG The David Cay book blew my mind. Trump is one shady con-man. 8y
Suet624 I'm not sure I could do that. Good luck and God speed. 😁 8y

#Bookmail! Whitman analyzes how Jim Crow laws influenced Nazi policy and practice, especially the signature anti-Jewish legislation known as the Nuremberg Laws. Sounds disturbing and fascinating. #ReadOutsideTheLines

MyNamesParadise And after the war we took in high ranking Nazis providing asylum so we could fight the Soviets and we turned away Jewish refugees which was a contributing factor to what we now have as the Israel/Palestine conflict. 8y
nofutureparttwo Also among the international admirers of Jim Crow were Afrikaner legal scholars—many of whom were educated in Europe alongside future Nazi officials—who drew inspiration from US race law in theorizing the juridical framework for Apartheid. The US gave global white supremacy an exemplary model for building a state-sponsored racist society, a legacy for which Whitman finally holds the country accountable. I'm glad other folks are reading this! (edited) 8y

National Book Award winner Ibram Kendi selects the 24 most influential books on race and the black experience in the US, one for each decade since the founding of the US. It's an informative and thought-provoking article: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/02/22/books/review/a-history-of-race-and-racism-in-... #BlackHistoryMonth #diversereads #ReadOutsideTheLines

LauraJ Thanks for sharing. This is a really strong list that should be required reading for all Americans. 8y

BarbaraTheBibliophage @bio_chem06 @BookishMarginalia Thanks for the heads up. Where is the documentary running? 8y
bio_chem06 @BarbaraTheBibliophage I found it on Amazon, but I don't know if it is on Prime anymore, but you can rent it. But you could check Netflix too. Might be there now. 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Cool - either of those would work. Thanks! 8y

If like me, you have ever wondered what life in a refugee camp is like, then please pick up this book, now out in an updated paperback edition. The Dadaab Refugee Camp in northern Kenya is home to half a million people. This book looks at the lives of nine of its residents. Timely and necessary. #diversereads #ReadOutsidetheLines #refugees #Picador

Tamra Highly recommend. In the same vein, What's the What about the lost boys is a must read. 8y

Just the foreword is giving me a headache. However, I think this is probably one of those books that I might need to read because it is written by a serious scholar whose conclusions will probably push my buttons. I think more than ever we are at a moment when it is imperative to be open to arguments and views not our own. This, for me, is a #ReadOutsideTheLines

kspenmoll Yup, esp if George Will wrote the intro. 8y
Hooked_on_books I look forward to your thoughts on this. I agree that understanding is important, and if expressed in a thoughtful, dispassionate way, I usually enjoy the experience. I find that the type of delivery I seek is rarely available. 8y
