#AuldLangSpine #2024

💙 I read 8 off this fantastic list from @Christine this year and have a few more on my TBR. My favorite Fiction was All the Sinners Bleed and nonfiction Finding Me but all 8 were excellent.

And as inspired by @Amiable my favorites from past years:

2020. @Jerdencon We Were the Lucky Ones
2021 MadDashReading The Glass Hotel
2022 @thewallflower0707 The Book of Longings (F) & All the Young Men (NF)
2023 @Amiable ⬇️

Deblovestoread Count the Ways (F) & The Family Roe (NF). I can‘t state enough how much I love this “swap”, so many wonderful books I might not have found on my own. So my thanks to you all for enriching my reading life. 💙💙💙 (edited) 2w
Deblovestoread I‘ve had trouble all year tagging Christine and can‘t again today so I hope you see this. And I think MadDashReading has a new handle but I can‘t remember it so if someone does would you mind reminding me and tag her in the comments? Thanks! 💙 2w
monalyisha @Deblovestoread I‘ve been using my desktop computer to tag Christine (she‘s my match this year, as well). 😅 It works if you search her last name in conjunction with her first. I don‘t think it‘s possible on the app, though! 2w

Deblovestoread @monalyisha Thanks for the full name tip! 2w
Amiable @Deblovestoread I‘m so happy to hear that you enjoyed several of my picks —and I totally agree with your comment about the discovery of fabulous books we might not have found on our own! 2w
Christine Oh yay, this is such a thrill to read!!! 💙💙💙💙💙💙 Wasn't Finding Me incredible?? I kind of want to reread it right now. BUT, I won't be doing that, in part because I'm going to sneak in a few more from your list before the end of the year and am so excited to do so!!! 2w
Christine And ugh, my evil username strikes again!!! 🤣 I'm sorry! I had no idea what I was doing when I (lazily) chose it. (And yes, searching for Christine Crofts works when tagging, I think - thanks @monalyisha !). 2w
Christine Now I'm very curious to see @Amiable 's current and previous year lists, too! 😁 I don't know if I'll get to The Family Roe in 2024 but absolutely will eventually! 2w
Amiable @Christine Email me at AmyBF45@ gmail.com and I‘ll send you the list I compiled for my swap partner this year! 2w
Christine @Amiable You are so sweet! Emailing now! :) 2w
Megabooks What a great list! I highly recommend An Immense World. I still think about it daily. 2w
Amiable @Christine Sent you an email -- sorry it's so ... um...excessive. 😁 1w
Christine @Amiable Not excessive in the least, and I can't wait to pore over and respond soon!! (In the throes of end-of-term grading for the five college courses I'm teaching, but the end is in sight!!) 1w
Amiable @Christine Yikes! May the Force (of the red marking pen) be with you! 1w

This was a truly remarkable story. It was something I really needed to read. It‘s a reminder that we can control our own fates. I strongly recommend reading this book. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Maddi‘s Fridge is a tender, eye-opening story that teaches children about poverty, compassion, and standing up for others in difficult situations.

And Then, Boom! | Lisa Fipps

In just a few words, Fipps makes abundantly clear how it feels to worry about bills, have no where to shower, and no food for money. She also paints a pretty rosy picture of friendship and the generosity of others.

Poverty, by America | Matthew Desmond

“Poverty isn‘t simply the condition of not having enough money, it‘s the condition of not having enough choice and being taken advantage of because of that.” Desmond makes the case that poverty in America is not perceived correctly, is not accidental and could be solved if the richest among us would pay the taxes they owe. Desmond also has many other ideas for improvement of life in America. l‘d recommend this to all U.S. citizens.

Free Lunch | Rex Ogle
post image

This memoir is a brutally honest reflection about the overwhelming emotions of growing up in poverty. Sixth-grader Rex feels incredible shame at the stigma of being in the free lunch program and inability to afford school supplies, on top of trying to shield his little brother from the DV between his stepfather and mother. Ultimately the book ends in a positive note as the family finds help.

Winner of the 2020 YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction award

Karisimo The brutally honest ones are hard but good! Thanks for sharing! 2mo

#SchoolSpirit Day 23: #Bicycle - The entire story is uplifting, irreverent, and filled with energy. The Afterword written by both the author and the illustrator is also illuminating as it speaks of their influences, their background, and the visual codes embedded in the narrative. Definitely a must-read and must-have. My review of two picturebooks about #Bicycle: https://wp.me/pDlzr-lDS
