This short book packed a punch. About the last white man on an island in Papua New Guinea in the time of a Civil War. He teaches the local students about the power of literature using Great Expectations. A tough but good read. #ReadingOceania2024

Librarybelle Yay for short books! 2mo
BarbaraBB I remember enjoying this one too. 2mo

V?: Stories by Women of the Moana | Lani Wendt Young, Sisilia Eteuati

Pickpick

This is a collection of over 50 short stories and poems, by women from various #readingoceania24 countries, including #newzealand, #fiji, #tonga, #papuanewguinea and, the one I‘m going for, #samoa.

Thank you so much for sending this to me Holly @Hooked_on_books - I really enjoyed it and also felt like I‘d learned a lot about the different cultures. I did prefer the more ‘modern‘ storytelling rather than the fables but there was a great mix.

Librarybelle Great photo! 6mo
Hooked_on_books Oh wonderful! I‘m glad it worked out. The store I found the books in is terrific for Hawaiiana (and apparently Oceania), so I‘m completely delighted! 6mo

I liked this, but I think I either needed more context for the historical aspect than the few minutes of online reading I did or more love for Great Expectations to truly appreciate it.

BkClubCare Oh! One of my favorites 7mo
Librarybelle Good to know about the context and how helpful it would be to have some knowledge of Great Expectations! 7mo
Daisey @BkClubCare Do you love Great Expectations or Dickens in general? I feel like that would have made this more impactful for me. (edited) 7mo
BkClubCare @Daisey - not sure if I have truly read Great Expectations or just “know” the story, and I like Dickens well enough. Can‘t remember why I enjoyed this one so much but I did. Years ago 😊 7mo

It was a beautiful evening, so I spent a bit of time in the hammock in the back yard with Gandalf and my current audiobook. Mr. Pip is set in Papua New Guinea and includes the only white man remaining on the island reading Great Expectations to students in the local school.

This slim book of short stories focuses on how outside pressures like development, religion, and more put stress on and encourage the alteration of island cultures. It‘s told with sly good humor. I read this slowly and think it might get a bit repetitive if read at a quicker pace.

#ReadingOceania2024 #PapuaNewGuinea

Librarybelle I see other reviews comment on the repetition. Good advice on reading slowly! 9mo

squirrelbrain Was it fiction or NF? How did it compare to We Are the Ocean? 9mo
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain We Are the Ocean is far better. This one is fiction and the last story, about the guy who is trying to do good work but hamstrung by what the aid organization wants to give him, is in both books. Several of the other stories have that same sly humor. 9mo
squirrelbrain Ah, yes, I recall that story! 😃 9mo

#readingoceania2024 #Papuanewguinea A story about the inspiration of teachers and their ability to open horizons through the love of a good book, in this case Great Expectations. However, set in the middle of an horrific and brutal civil war. Moving read.

Librarybelle Nice photo! 9mo
BarbaraBB I enjoyed this one too. Can‘t remember the setting in Papua New Guinea or I would have saved it for the challenge 😀 9mo
Currey @BarbaraBB Yes, the author never actually mentions the name Papua New Guinea but he does names the towns, the cooper mines, and the civil war 9mo
BarbaraBB Clever choice!! 9mo

My next audiobook for #PapuaNewGuinea

This will be my 9th book for #readingOceania, more than halfway finished! But I plan to read more than one book for each country.

My first book for #readingoceania24 and it‘s a great one! I learned a lot about the people and culture of Oceanic islands.

My favourite quote: we are a ‘Sea of Islands rather than islands in a far sea‘.

I‘m using this for #tonga, and it would also work for #papuanewguinea or #fiji.

Thank you so much for sending it to me, Holly, and I enjoyed reading along with you. I‘m so lucky that you sent me two books that I would never otherwise have read.

BarbaraBB What a great kick-off! 10mo
Librarybelle Hooray!! 10mo
Hooked_on_books Hooray! I‘m glad you liked it! I give so much credit to Basically Books for stocking this book for me to find. I thought it was terrific, too. What a great way of looking at Oceania he had. 10mo
squirrelbrain Such a good book to read first for this challenge @Hooked_on_books 10mo

2/1 I understood my first joke today. I was observing the weaving of mosquito bags in the 2nd women's house. I sat next to a woman called Tadi and I asked her what she would do with the shells she earned and she said her husband would use them to buy another wife. 'I cannot make this bag fast enough,' she said. We all fell over laughing.
