We Are the Ocean
We Are the Ocean: Selected Works | Epeli Hau?ofa
6 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
We Are the Ocean is a collection of essays, fiction, and poetry by Epeli Hau'ofa, whose writing over the past three decades has consistently challenged prevailing notions about Oceania and prescriptions for its development. He highlights major problems confronted by the region and suggests alternative perspectives and ways in which its people might reorganize to relate effectively to the changing world. Hau'ofa's essays criss-cross Oceania, creating a navigator's star chart of discussion and debate. Spurning the arcana of the intellectual establishments where he was schooled, Hau'ofa has crafted a distinctive - often lyrical, at times angry - voice that speaks directly to the people of the region and the general reader. He conveys his thoughts from diverse standpoints: university-based analyst, essayist, satirist and humorist, and practical catalyst for creativity. According to Hau'ofa, only through creative originality in all fields of endeavor can the people of Oceania hope to strengthen their capacity to engage the forces of globalization. "Our Sea of Islands," "The Ocean in Us," "Pasts to Remember," and "Our Place Within," all of which are included in this collection, outline some of Hau'ofa's ideas for the emergence of a stronger and freer Oceania. Throughout he expresses his concern with the environment and suggests that the most important role that the "people of the sea" can assume is as custodians of the Pacific, the vast area of the world's largest body of water.

My first book for #readingoceania24 and it‘s a great one! I learned a lot about the people and culture of Oceanic islands.

My favourite quote: we are a ‘Sea of Islands rather than islands in a far sea‘.

I‘m using this for #tonga, and it would also work for #papuanewguinea or #fiji.

Thank you so much for sending it to me, Holly, and I enjoyed reading along with you. I‘m so lucky that you sent me two books that I would never otherwise have read.

BarbaraBB What a great kick-off! 10mo
Librarybelle Hooray!! 10mo
Hooked_on_books Hooray! I‘m glad you liked it! I give so much credit to Basically Books for stocking this book for me to find. I thought it was terrific, too. What a great way of looking at Oceania he had. 10mo

This book was a great find for #ReadingOceania2024, as anthropologist Hau‘ofa is steeped in Oceania. I particularly appreciated his way of looking at the region and the short fiction piece makes me want to read the book it came from. This one is best read one or two pieces at a time. #Tonga (would also work for Papua New Guinea, Fiji, or arguably any of the Oceania countries)

Librarybelle Love your photo…looks like gorgeous weather! 10mo
Hooked_on_books @Librarybelle Thanks! If I‘d taken it at any other time today, you would have seen pouring rain! The skies happened to clear and I took advantage. 10mo

In the first 2 essays of part II, Hau‘ofa encourages a different way of looking at Oceania, not as isolated, disparate places, but a cohesive whole bound by family ties. This is how it was before the intrusion of European influence and how the peoples of these places remain interconnected today.

Helen, I have to admit I found the second essay in part II a teeny bit dry in places. 🫢 @squirrelbrain

squirrelbrain Ooh, I haven‘t got to that bit yet. 😬 There is some fiction included too isn‘t there? 10mo
Hooked_on_books @squirrelbrain These two pieces are essays. Per the foreword, there‘s fiction to come, but I haven‘t gotten to it yet. 10mo

Epeli Hau‘ofa was born to Tongan parents in Papua New Guinea and went on to become an anthropologist specializing in the South Pacific. He also wrote fiction and nonfiction and was passionate about Oceania.

Helen, I‘m pretty proud of myself for this find! I‘ve read the Foreword and Part I and it‘s really interesting so far. He was clearly deeply respected and incredibly thoughtful. I think a couple of pieces a day is the right pace.

squirrelbrain You‘re *very* clever to find this book Holly! 🤣 I finished Part 1 last night too - looking forward to reading a bit more soon. 10mo

#readingoceania24

I‘ve only just read the preface and the first essay, Holly, and I can already tell this is going to be a fascinating book.

I keep Googling and making notes, (which countries are in Melanesia - Fiji, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea) and also so I can remember which countries are covered in the book.

At the moment I think I‘ll use it for #tonga for sure but may add some more obscure ones if they‘re covered.

squirrelbrain Oh, and forgot to say I love the local indie bookmarks! ❤️ 10mo
Librarybelle That does sound awesome! 10mo
BarbaraBB Sounds like you‘ve had a perfect day 🩵 10mo

Hooked_on_books Nice! I look forward to getting started! I had forgotten they stuffed bookmarks in both books. Nice bonus! 10mo
Hooked_on_books I know your schedule is crazy (seriously, you‘re carrying that company on your back!) and you likely aren‘t reading much of this, which I totally get, but wanted to let you know I‘ve finished part 2. I‘ve slowed to one piece a day and that‘s working better. I‘ve looked forward and most of part 3 is fiction, which should be interesting. 10mo
squirrelbrain Yes, I think one piece a day may be better Holly @Hooked_on_books otherwise they blend together a bit. I have two essays to go in Part 2, so I‘m not that far behind. Just sat down to do some reading (it‘s 3.30 pm) after working most of the day. And yes, it‘s Saturday here already! 🤷‍♀️ 10mo
Hooked_on_books Sadly I‘m no stranger to working on weekends, so I know it sucks! Hopefully you have more time to yourself on Sunday. I read the first essay of part 3 and it‘s a little lighter than the previous essays. I saw the next piece was fiction so I went ahead and read it and it‘s great! Clever and cheeky. 10mo
Hooked_on_books I finished part 3 last night. I didn‘t like The Tuktuks much, so I was not sure about the next piece from the same book, but ended up liking it much better (though it‘s bizarre!) and thought the interview was a great way to wind up that section. I may end up finishing the book today. 10mo
squirrelbrain Yes, there were a lot of a*ses weren‘t there?! @Hooked_on_books My next part is the interview so I‘m glad you enjoyed it. No more for me though today - it‘s bedtime over here! 🤣 10mo

Holly, I love, love, love that you sent me books from Hawaii / Pacific Islanders / Oceania! ❤️❤️❤️

Flicking through the books - I don‘t think I‘ll need any other books for #readingoceania24 - it‘s all here!

I love the local bookmark and the sticky notes are so cute!

And thank you so much for your newsy note - I‘ll email you soon! 😘

Have a lovely Christmas!

Hooked_on_books These looked good to me, so I hope they are! Merry Christmas to you! 11mo
BarbaraBB Such great gifts! 11mo
Hooked_on_books I went to the library today to get a couple books for the Oceania challenge and the one I planned for Tonga clearly wasn‘t going to work (it was really a magazine), so I ended up getting a copy of We Are the Ocean. 😆 Apparently the author is one of the first published writers from Tonga. 11mo
squirrelbrain Yay - buddy read! @Hooked_on_books Can you wait until 1st week of Jan - you know me, stick to the rules?! 🤣 And I *will* send you an email soon - it‘s back to work with a vengeance today though - 7am and I‘m already at my desk! 🙄 11mo
Hooked_on_books Yuck, that‘s too early! I‘m not a morning person. I will absolutely wait until January, as I‘m a rules person, too! 11mo
