This is a very tough book. Very controversial as well. It‘s about a scientist who observes an indigenous group of people in #Micronesia. He takes some of them to the US for further study. It‘s all so disgusting and this is just the beginning. But this is Yanagihara so I should have known what to expect. I‘m left with a bitter taste yet that‘s exactly what she aimed for probably. A pick of course.

Suet624 Oh wait. Is she the person who wrote a little life? 1mo
BarbaraBB @Librarybelle Me too. I only read three or four 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1mo
BarbaraBB @Suet624 She is. And this one is completely different but just as hard in its message 1mo
BarbaraBB @AmyG @Bookwormjillk I wouldn‘t recommend this one. It is real good but so hard. The story. Not the writing. 1mo
sarahbarnes Yes, I agree with your take. It was good but really hard to read, in a different way than A Little Life but so disturbing. 1mo

#weeklyforecast 44/24

I am reading and enjoying Annie Bot. I am about to start People in the Trees for #ReadingOceania24. The tagged one is on my to read list for this week too.

Deblovestoread I look forward to your review for this one. 2mo
BarbaraBB @Deblovestoread I just started it. It is promising. Have you read it? 2mo
Deblovestoread Not yet…hoping a good review will give me the push to pick it up. 😁 2mo
squirrelbrain People in the Trees is a tough read - but I was completely engrossed by it. 2mo

Another book I never would have read if it weren‘t for a Litsy challenge. In this book a hobbyist searches for the missing people in #Palau - the scene of some of the bloodiest battles of WWII. I found this short book to be very interesting. #ReadingOceania24

Librarybelle I love how these challenges help us find new-to-us authors and books! 2mo
BarbaraBB One of the bloodiest battles? Who would have thought. It‘s always refreshing and important to read about such events 2mo

The memoirs of a man working on starting the Micronesian police force in the late 70‘s to early 80‘s is kind of random but not terrible to read about. #ReadingOceania24 #Micronesia

BarbaraBB Wow, Micronesia! 3mo
Texreader I really enjoyed this one!! 3mo
Librarybelle I remember your review about this one, @Texreader ! 3mo
Hooked_on_books I liked this one. He seemed like a genuinely good guy. 3mo

Quite chaotic, this book. And this family. But so funny and loving. I don‘t have much to add to what others have already said but I wouldn‘t have mind spending more time with Greta & Valdin or have people like them in my inner circle. A feel-good book!

#ReadingOceania24 🇳🇿

squirrelbrain Very chaotic! 3mo
Suet624 I just spent time trying to find this book in print in my local libraries. I'm finding that the libraries are now ordering an awful lot of audiobooks and ebooks, which I don't really like. Finally found a library with the actual book - now I am on a very long waiting list. :) 3mo
BarbaraBB @Suet624 I am frightened for the moment audio an ebooks will have replaced printed books! I am glad you found a copy. It‘s good but I doubt it‘ll end up on my best of ‘24 list 3mo

Suet624 I‘m worried too! I had seen so many good reviews about this book that I assumed I should check it out. Maybe I don‘t need to rush. 3mo
BarbaraBB @Suet624 You‘ll love it, like everyone does, but you won‘t be blown away I think 3mo
BiblioLitten One of my top favourites from this year! 3mo
Librarybelle I had this one out from the library but had to return it because I did not get it read in time. I‘ll have to get this out again! 3mo
CarolynM My favourite book of 2022 - @Centique gave me a copy before it was available outside NZ - I think I need to read it again soon because you are right, it is a feel good book 😊 3mo
BarbaraBB @CarolynM Such a great gift! A reread would be nice in your busy stressful times ❤️ 3mo

I'm updating the spreadsheet we use to admin the @LitsyEvents page and share all your great events/games/buddyreads/readathons/competitions, etc.

It would be a great help if you could help me out by tagging the details of your events, hosts, dates/times, info about the group/event.

Additionally, if you no longer run an event, please let me know so I can remove it from the taglist.

Please tag me @AllDebooks or @LitsyEvents #LitsyEvents

TIA x

Librarybelle Thanks to @dabbe for reposting this so I remembered to add mine! Monthly is #LiteraryCrew , with discussion on the last day of each month. This is a read at your own pace #buddyread , with titles selected by the group and announced at the beginning of the year. The other monthly is #NancyDrewBR . The group is reading the Nancy Drew books in series order, with discussion on the 15th of each month. ⬇️⬇️⬇️ 5mo
Librarybelle ⬆️⬆️⬆️ This is our last year of reading around the world, but @BarbaraBB and I are hosting #ReadingOceania24 , also listed on Storygraph, in which participants read a book set in or by an author from each of the countries in Oceania, plus Antarctica. ⬇️⬇️⬇️ 5mo
Librarybelle ⬆️⬆️⬆️ I am also hosting the #192025 challenge, which has participants read one book originally published each year from 1920-2025. The challenge ends on December 31, 2025, and it began in July 2022. 5mo
dabbe @Librarybelle 🩵💙🩵 5mo
TheSpineView Thanks for tracking all of the events. I am sure it is a monument task! I host a variety of things. Daily is #PoetryMatters photo challenge. I cohost with @Andrew65 the #SeriesLove2024 and I believe it is the 4th year and I plan to continue it in 2025. I also host the #LitsySciFiBookClub and plan to continue as long as there is interest. I also just started #BDBBookClub #BDBBuddyRead which is in the 2nd month. This book club is reading... 5mo
TheSpineView ...the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by J. R. Ward in order and will run through the entire series as long as there is interest to continue. Lastly, is the #Two4Tuesday game played every Tuesday. It is in it's fifth year with no plans to stop. 5mo
AllDebooks @TheSpineView Thank you. This helps enormously x 😊 5mo
AllDebooks @Librarybelle thank you x 5mo

Cuilin So glad others have reposted this as I would have forgotten to come back and check it out. I host #BookedInTime a monthly choose your own book for the prompt, I cohost #NoPlaceLikeHolmes with @Dabbe a Sherlock Holmes, buddy read and starting in September #WhatTheDickens yearly or biannual Charles Dickens buddy read. 5mo
dabbe @Cuilin ... Tag me for the #WhatTheDickens! I would love to join that! 🤩🤩🤩 (edited) 5mo
AllDebooks @Cuilin thank you x Count me in for #WhatTheDickens please 😊 5mo
Cuilin @dabbe @AllDebooks so glad you‘re both joining. I‘ll tag you 🩷 5mo
julieclair I host #SeasonalCozies - each month everyone chooses a cozy mystery to read based on a holiday that month or season of the year. I will continue this next year if there is interest. I also host #ReadOrDonate - each month everyone chooses a book to read that has been sitting on their shelves forever. If the book remains unread at the end of the month, it must be donated somewhere. This will continue next year. Both of these started this year. 5mo
AllDebooks @julieclair thank you. I didn't know about either of these. Great ideas x 5mo
julieclair And lastly, I host #MonthlyMagazineBlitz - each month everyone reads all the magazines they own from that month - no matter what year they are from. The magazines are then donated to local organizations that can use them. The goal is to clean out our stacks of back issues. This started this year, and will not continue next year, as (hopefully!) we all will have decluttered our magazine piles. 5mo
AllDebooks @julieclair good grief, do I have a lot of magazines to get through. I've just decluttered the office and found over 50 unread mags. 😱 Please tag me in from August 😊 5mo
julieclair @AllDebooks I feel your pain, LOL. Happy to add you to our determined little group! 😃💪 5mo

I got this free on a stuff your kindle day. Those books can be hit or miss but this one wasn‘t half bad. A cozy mystery set in New Zealand post WWI. I wish it were illustrated because the dresses the seamstress/ sleuth described sounded amazing! #ReadingOceania24

Librarybelle Glad this one was a hit and not a miss! 7mo

This one was a little more serious than Troost‘s other books. Having faced his alcoholism and completed rehab Troost takes on another adventure- this time following the steps of Robert Louis Stevenson in Oceania. I actually appreciated his introspection and enjoyed this one more than Sex Lives of Cannibals. (He seems to pick his titles at random. They have nothing to do with the books.) #ReadingOceania24 @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle

Librarybelle Great review! I‘ve yet to read this one by him. Some day! 7mo
