Mister Pip
Mister Pip | Lloyd Jones
After the trouble starts and the soldiers arrive on Matildas island, only one white person stays behind. Mr. Watts, whom the kids call Pop Eye, wears a red nose and pulls his wife around on a trolley, and he steps in to teach the children when there is no one else. His only lessons consist of reading from his battered copy of Great Expectations, a book by his friend Mr. Dickens. For Matilda, Dickenss hero Pip becomes as real to her as her own mother, and the greatest friendship of her life has begun. Soon Mr. Wattss book begins to inflame the childrens imaginations with dreams about Dickenss London and the larger world. But how will they answer when the soldiers demand to know: where is this man named Pip? Set against the stunning beauty of Bougainville in the South Pacific during the civil war in the early 1990s, Lloyd Joness breathtaking novel shows what magic a childs imagination makes possible even in the face of terrible violence and what power stories have to fuel the imagination. From the Hardcover edition.

This short book packed a punch. About the last white man on an island in Papua New Guinea in the time of a Civil War. He teaches the local students about the power of literature using Great Expectations. A tough but good read. #ReadingOceania2024

I liked this, but I think I either needed more context for the historical aspect than the few minutes of online reading I did or more love for Great Expectations to truly appreciate it.

BkClubCare Oh! One of my favorites 7mo
Librarybelle Good to know about the context and how helpful it would be to have some knowledge of Great Expectations! 7mo
Daisey @BkClubCare Do you love Great Expectations or Dickens in general? I feel like that would have made this more impactful for me. (edited) 7mo
BkClubCare @Daisey - not sure if I have truly read Great Expectations or just “know” the story, and I like Dickens well enough. Can‘t remember why I enjoyed this one so much but I did. Years ago 😊 7mo

It was a beautiful evening, so I spent a bit of time in the hammock in the back yard with Gandalf and my current audiobook. Mr. Pip is set in Papua New Guinea and includes the only white man remaining on the island reading Great Expectations to students in the local school.

#readingoceania2024 #Papuanewguinea A story about the inspiration of teachers and their ability to open horizons through the love of a good book, in this case Great Expectations. However, set in the middle of an horrific and brutal civil war. Moving read.

Librarybelle Nice photo! 9mo
BarbaraBB I enjoyed this one too. Can‘t remember the setting in Papua New Guinea or I would have saved it for the challenge 😀 9mo
Currey @BarbaraBB Yes, the author never actually mentions the name Papua New Guinea but he does names the towns, the cooper mines, and the civil war 9mo
BarbaraBB Clever choice!! 9mo

I loved this book! Thanks for suggesting I read it @MrsMalaprop straight after reading Great expectations by Charles Dickens. I had a big ugly cry!

Reagan Oh I have had this for years and never read it, maybe I need to move it up! (edited) 3y

This is my #bookgiftedtoyou pick for #booked2019. It was given to me by one of my best friend. She spoke so highly of it that I was too scared to read it for a couple of years. I'm pleased I've finally read it. I really enjoyed it. It's a beautifully-told but horrible story.
This prompt was hard for me - I either buy my own books or borrow them from the library.

This is a beautiful story that goes to some very dark places and I don‘t know if I can recommend it to anyone unless you have a lot of resilience! I‘ll explain how it fits the prompt under a spoiler tag in the comments.

Centique Do you ever read a book with a sinking feeling, a “that‘s too much, they‘re all screwed” feeling? This is one of those books for me. It starts very hopeful and light but it gets very tough. 6y
Libby1 I agree. 6y
Cinfhen And that cover seems so joyful and full of promise!! Thanks for the warning XX 6y

My haul from The Strand. Glad I paid for shipping and didn‘t try to shove it all in my suitcase. Couldn‘t help it 🤷‍♀️

Texreader Great to know they have shipping! I‘m going next month!! 6y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled @Texreader Yes! Go crazy and don‘t worry about it! 😂 Plus, since they ship out of stare, you don‘t pay NY sales tax, so you‘re really breaking even, give or take - I think that‘s how it works, anyway! (I was afraid to look at my bill) 6y
LeahBergen Nice! I did the “cram it all in my suitcase” last week after Powell‘s. 😂 6y

Spent the day in Bougainville with Mister Pip for the first day of the October #tbrtoppler. Pity I haven't read Great Expectations.

Despite the drama happening on the island of Bougainville, the story of Matilda is being told very modestly. This gives the book its unique character, along with the theme of storytelling, which I liked a lot.
Everyone has its story, not only Dickens, but all of us. And we can read in it what we want and tell it on the way we want. I like Mr. Watts better than I do like Pip, for example..! #booker #manbooker

OMG! Read this book! It is such a beautifully moving novel about how a book can change a life. Even if you're not a Dickens fan, shame on you, you will love this book.

This was a quick read, although a very moving and troubling story. It has stayed with me long after I finished. Great expectations imagined in a whole different perspective. The film maybe was even better than the book(!?)

Set primarily on the war torn island of Bougainville, this book illustrates the many forms literature can take and the many roles it can play even in the most desperate circumstances

I adored this powerful book. It's not at all necessary to have read Great Expectations but it adds to the experience.
