Read for #olympicsport #booked2018 and I'm glad I was prompted to pick this one up. I enjoyed it, and it's definitely a book I would have liked as a kid. If any criticism, it's just the abrupt ending--but that serves the story, and there are sequels, so even that doesn't really detract from it.

jmtrivera If it helps to know, the sequel picks up EXACTLY where the first leaves off. 6y
llwheeler @jmtrivera Oh good to know, thanks! ☺ 6y

This story drew my attention, but it was the #Olympicsport prompt for #booked2018 that gave me the nudge to read it.

Wow. The whole story is so incredible and inspiring, but it is Joe Rantz's story that makes the book. All he overcame, just to survive - let alone become a champion oarsman, is inconceivable. And not only that, he was truly a good man. My heart broke through the 1st half, and I cried through the epilogue. A moving must-read.

Reviewsbylola Fantastic book! (edited) 6y
Cinfhen I probably should try this book again....i started reading it right after reading Unbroken (which I loved) and I just wasn‘t feeling Boys. 6y
Cinfhen Congrats on adding another prompt ❣️❣️❣️ 6y

mabell @Reviewsbylola It was! And, it was a great time to finish it - I got a good dose of patriotism leading up to the Fourth! ❤️🇺🇸 6y
mabell @Cinfhen I've never read Unbroken, but this one is worth another shot! I began it months ago, but my library ebook returned before I could finish it. I checked out the audiobook next, and it was very good. It was also helpful to listen while doing other things. 6y
Cinfhen I recommend 6y
ValerieAndBooks I loved this book so much❤️!! 6y

This book met #OlympicSport category for #Booked2018. At the center of the story is a group of kids who have extraordinary talent but no means to enhance their swimming skills. Set in the 1930s and into the 1940s, a teacher, Soichi Sakamoto, took notice of the kids as they splashed around together. In 1937, Sakamoto formalized their training as the Three-Year Swim club, or 3YC, with their sights set on the 1940 Olympics. The rest is history.

Cinfhen Fascinating!!! Love NF tagging @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage 7y

Don‘t hate me...#unpopularopinion time. This was so hard to get through for me. What I liked: the historical anecdotes cleverly placed throughout the book, as well as the “boys‘” stories. What I didn‘t like: the boat talk. Sorry, rowing isn‘t for me. I understand why the mechanics and the rowing terminology were discussed, but it didn‘t hold my interest.

This completes the #OlympicSport for #Booked2018 and #AboutSports for #LRC . #LRC2018

StephanieGeiser It didn‘t hold my interest either! I just couldn‘t get invested in the story so I bailed. 7y
Librarybelle @StephanieGeiser Glad I‘m not the only one! 7y
SandyW Yep, sometimeswhen someone is passionate about a topic, they can't floss over things for the rest of us. 7y

SandyW Floss was supposed to be gloss... But floss everyday!😂 7y
Librarybelle @SandyW Lol! Flossing is important! 😂 7y
emilyhaldi I can see why you had an issue with the technical parts, but the rest of the story won me over! 7y
Librarybelle @emilyhaldi I found the personal stories, especially Joe‘s, very moving. Between that and the historical content, I rated this a 3 on GR. 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage No hate from me. My BIL raves about this one. But it was pretty flat for me. Good for you on finishing! Have fun with your personal readathon this weekend! 7y
Chronic_Reader I also rated the book so-so but for the opposite reasons 😂 As a collegiate coxswain, I only enjoyed the rowing parts and got bored with the history. Rowing requires an entirely new language/vocabulary that is hard to read if you haven‘t lived it. I was so confused with all the new words when I started the sport. 7y
Librarybelle @Chronic_Reader Rowing is a very different language and sounds like it takes much endurance and sacrifice. Awesome to you for living the sport...I do not have a single ounce of athletic ability in me, so I really appreciate the talent it takes for any sport. 🙂 7y

This was a fun book, written in verse. Explores Nick‘s journey through 8th grade. He‘s obsessed with soccer, nervous to talk to the girl he likes, has to deal with bullies and his parents splitting. I really enjoyed it. I picked this for #OlympicSport for #Booked2018

It took a while, but I finally finished, not in time for #bookclub last week but still in time for #OlympicSport for the first quarter #Booked2018 challenge. It was a compelling story told well - just a little long - that I could work in around other reading.

Cinfhen Good job!! I found this book a little on the long side too!! It was for bookclub as well and I ended up skim reading the last third 😜🙈 7y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Check another one off the list! 👏🏻👏🏻 I agree with you about content—long but basically interesting. 7y

We‘re in the home stretch for the first season of #Booked2018! You have until midnight ET on Mar 31 to finish reading any prompts you choose and post about it! Afterwards, we will have a random drawing for a small prize. 😃

This is my wrap-up for Jan-Mar. I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings and Fangirl were favorites, but I enjoyed all of them. The Secret of Chimneys was more espionage than cozy mystery, but no blood and gore, so I counted it!

alisiakae As for #olympicsport, to show how little I follow sports, I forgot that basketball is in the summer Olympics, not the Winter Olympics, lol. 😂 I meant to choose a winter Olympic sport, and didn‘t realize I hadn‘t until the Olympics came on in Feb! 🤦🏻‍♀️ 7y
tpixie @4thhouseontheleft lol. I guess it‘s because it‘s still their regular season. Effort counts though!! 7y
Cinfhen Well done💕looking forward to seeing what everyone chooses for second quarter😍 7y
alisiakae @Cinfhen Same here! Although I already finished the Refugee prompt. 😃 7y
