Pickpick

An artist living on an isolated island off the coast of Brittany just before WWI is visited by an eminent art critic, who used to be his mentor and now wants his portrait painted.

A series of monologues from the artist to the sitter while he's painting explore what has brought them that point. Although the ending is fairly predictable early on it is only in the last 30 pages that we learn the motivation behind it. Something of a tour de force.

Bklover You‘ve made this sound fascinating! 10mo
tpixie Sounds intriguing 🤔 10mo

I had to google rock and roll books 😆 and this one that‘s been on my shelves for a while came up on a few lists so obvious choice! And the song was the first one I thought of - love the whole album 🎶 #titlesandtunes

Cinfhen The Girls is a GREAT choice! Hope you enjoy the book 😄🩷 2y
squirrelbrain Ooh, good choice for the book! 2y
BarbaraBB Lykke Li 🖤🖤🖤 (edited) 2y

youneverarrived @Cinfhen thanks! I‘m glad it‘s given me the push to read it 😁 2y
youneverarrived @squirrelbrain one of those books I‘ve never felt called to read although I‘ve had it for a while, so glad for this prompt for the push to finally get to it! (edited) 2y
youneverarrived @BarbaraBB love her ♥️ 2y
BarbaraBB She‘s great. I am wondering if you‘ll love the book too. I didn‘t 😉 but it definitely fits the prompt! 2y
batsy I love Lykke Li! Fun choice and great book choice, too. I've been eyeing it since reading Cline's latest, The Guest. 2y
youneverarrived @BarbaraBB ohh I‘m intrigued now - we have similar taste in books so we shall see 😁 2y
youneverarrived @batsy I Never Learn is one of my all time favourite albums 🖤 I haven‘t read The Guest but if I like this I‘ll most likely read that one too. 2y

So I‘ve already read my book choice, but it‘s perfect for this prompt, AND the series was SO good. Plus, it introduced me to Patti Smith‘s “Dancing Barefoot,” my first choice for #SexDrugsAndRockNRoll. And I had to pick a Led Zeppelin song - “Going to California.” 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻💚💚💚 #TitlesAndTunes

Soubhiville There‘s a great version of U2 doing Dancing Barefoot. It‘s a favorite of mine 🙂. 2y
CBee @Soubhiville I‘m a little sad I‘d never heard it before. I‘ll definitely check out the U2 cover, they‘re a favorite of mine too 😊 2y

CBee @Soubhiville oh my gosh Soubhi, it‘s AMAZING 😍😍 2y
BarbaraBB Dancing barefoot is fantastic! In both versions 🩷 2y
Cinfhen Daisy Jones is SUCH a GREAT idea!!!!! And I never knew either song and now I need to listen to both!! 2y
Bookwomble Patti 💖 2y
Soubhiville Right? I heard that version first, but I do love the original as well. I also loved this book and the adaptation was very well done! 2y
CBee @Soubhiville thanks for telling me about the U2 version 💚 2y
CBee @Cinfhen first book I thought of! Have you watched the series? It was really good. (edited) 2y
CBee @Bookwomble she‘s amazing 💚💚 2y
CBee @BarbaraBB yes! 💚💚 2y

squirrelbrain Yay! I *think* I‘ve sorted both, but may well change my mind…! 2y
Cinfhen Can‘t wait @squirrelbrain !!!! 2y
DGRachel I‘m struggling with this one! I‘m going to have to see what others post for inspiration! 2y
Cinfhen Im sure inspiration will strike @DGRachel !!! 2y
DGRachel @Bookwormjillk I wanted to find something I already own that would fit, but the only thing that comes to mind is a stretch, so I‘m watching for ideas that aren‘t classic rock memoirs. 🤔 2y
BarbaraBB Yay! I am in the midst of my book already and loving it again! #ScarTissue 2y
Librarybelle Woohoo!! 2y
CarolynM I‘ve decided on my song, still thinking about the book🤔 2y
Cinfhen Can‘t wait to see/hear what you decide @CarolynM ♥️ 2y
Faranae Apparently I failed to tag correctly to join in June, but I'll do better for July. I think I know my book, now I just need to match a song. One of the protagonists writes for Village Voice in the 1970s, so the field is wide open with some pretty good tracks. 😁 2y
Cinfhen Sorry we missed you in June @Faranae but super glad to have you join us for July!! Tagging @BarbaraBB so she knows to add your name as well!!! 2y

Mehso-so

A bit of an oddball novella this one, but with lots of tidbits about French libraries.
"there was one thing they didn't manage to do, in the [French] Revolution.... the Big Catalogue. In 1789, they confiscated 12m books from the aristocrats and the clergy, and they thought they'd distribute them to public libraries. That's a terrific idea. You have to give them that. Admit it... But alas, if you want to know the rest, they never got round to it."

DivineDiana So, I wonder what did happen to those 12 million books? 🤔 4y
charl08 @DivineDiana I would guess they got sold on to rich people elsewhere, but that might just be the cynicism talking... 4y
