I have read several biographies of Bronson and Louisa, but did not know May(Amy) was a leader in her passion. Not only growing up with Transcendentalists and being offended by her portrayal in her famous sister's book, she knew several renowned artists of her time. I learned so much and stayed on Google to learn more about May's art. She was very independent and did not want Louisa's monetary aid once she was established.

I read this book in high school for two reasons: I had a goal to read all the Newbery books and I loved Little Women.

Bailedbailed

I bailed on Susan Cheever‘s biography of Louisa May Alcott. It jumped all over the place,time-wise,people-wise,idea-wise.Too much about other literary figures of the time:Emerson,Thoreau,Hawthorne,Elizabeth & Sofia Peabody, Margaret Fuller, etc. Not that they are not fascinating figures in & of themselves,& they did influence Louisa, but it felt like the author spent an inordinate amount of verbiage on people & world events. It just felt scrambled.

Hooked_on_books When that happens, I always wonder if the author just couldn‘t find enough that they wanted to include and thus put that in as filler or if they thought that amount of detailed context is necessary. It tends to drive me crazy when authors do that. 9mo

Amusing and interesting! Loved to see how Alcott pulled from her lived experiences to tell stories outside of Little Women, and a couple of her jokes did have me rolling. #essays

This was slow going at first, the Branson Alcott section was a lot to get through, pretty dense, and quite infuriating. But when Louisa arrived in the scene, things picked up and the story of the family, Concord MA and all the historical elements were remarkable. Pretty astounding that Thoreau, Emerson, Henry James, Hawthorne, and both Alcotts were connected and many were dear friends. #MountTBR #BookspinBingo #20in4 @Andrew65 @TheAromaofBooks

Daisey I haven‘t read this one yet, but I was able to travel to Concord a few years ago. Walking from the home where the Alcotts lived, past Emerson‘s, and through a still wooded area to Walden Pond was a fantastic part of my visit! 2y
TheAromaofBooks This does sound interesting, but Branson Alcott has always driven me crazy, even his fictionalized version in Little Women. He was so self-absorbed and justified it by acting like “philosophy“ was so important he shouldn't have to, you know, support his family in any way 🙄 But I have always thought it was crazy that that entire group were peers and influenced one another's writing and theories! 2y
Julsmarshall @TheAromaofBooks I agree, he was pretty terrible! Cared more about his lofty philosophical ambitions than his children eating. Even more impressive that Louisa found her confidence and her calling. 2y
