My homeschool book club met today to discuss this fantastic story of two cousins, Otto and Sheed, who are so bummed about school starting tomorrow that they accidentally freeze time 😬 It‘s a goofy fantasy with Phantom Tollbooth vibes but also deep thoughts about the passage of time. The kids had an in-depth discussion of what they would do if they could time travel (stop WWII, apparently) and programmed Sphero robots for a robot dance party! 🤖
Had an unexpected day off at my library today (a planned power outage to replace a utility pole) so I popped over to another county library location for some early chapter book inspiration. I‘m planning the reading lists for my #homeschoolbookclub groups this school year. Suggestions welcome, particularly ones with racially & ethnically diverse voices! #kidlit #weneeddiversebooks #chapterbooks
Our last #homeschoolbookclub meeting of the school year is tomorrow! The theme is Bring Your Own Graphic Novel, so I hope they all found something they enjoyed and want to talk about! Personally, I‘m studying up on how to create your own comics 👩🎨 🎨 #graphicnovel #comics #raisingreaders #raisingwriters
Yesterday‘s #homeschoolbookclub for this book went great! We debated which cover we liked best (it was about half and half hardcover vs paperback) and our most surprising characters, then built our own castles. Hedgehog Hall here (complete with working drawbridge and Princess Hedge in the tower) was graciously left in the library for others to play with... definitely not because it wouldn‘t fit in anyone‘s car 😉 🏰 👑 🦔📚
Happy #nationalpetday from Olive, who has heroically let me finish my book club homework with only minor interruptions 🐶 (and look! One of our books is even one of those “dogs cure everything” books, even if it features Great Pyrenees instead of beagles!) #homeschoolbookclub #kidlit
All right, enough fun reading. My next meeting of #homeschoolbookclub is tomorrow so I‘d better get to rereading the book!
Working on this week‘s #homeschoolbookclub book and plotting my own diabolical codes and ciphers... #dogsoflitsy #kidlit #middlegrade #mystery
I was so ready to breeze through this #kidlit reread last night before #homeschoolbookclub, and of course Sharon Creech snuck up on me again and made me tear up 😭 She‘s been doing that to me for 20+ years at this point, you‘d think I‘d expect it by now.
Pictured is one of the concrete poems the kids wrote— this group‘s prompt was “ball” #raisingreaders #librarianlife
My next #homeschoolbookclub meeting is still three weeks away, but most of my kids have told me they‘ve already finished The Fourteenth Goldfish. Luckily the sequel just came out, and I figured I‘d better read it too. This is a pretty enjoyable follow up, although I felt the historical scientists, friendship elements, and tidy endings were laid on a bit too thick for me this time. Definitely read the other first. #kidlit #middlegrade
