The Last Last-Day-of-Summer
The Last Last-Day-of-Summer | Lamar Giles
6 posts | 5 read | 7 to read
"The Last Last-Day-of-Summer reminds me that all children deserve to exist in magical spaces where their imaginations and familial bonds will them into heroism. Every single child should have the freedom to be one of The Legendary Alstons. And I, for one, am grateful to Giles, and this brilliant story, for that reminder." —Jason Reynolds, author of Newbery Honoree Long Way Down “The legendary heroes of this legendary book are already legendary when the story begins! From there things can only get legendary-er!” —Tom Angleberger, author of the Origami Yoda series "Lamar Giles has written an instant classic—readers won't want their time with the Legendary Alston Boys of Logan County to end." —Gwenda Bond, author of the Lois Lane series The Hardy Boys meets The Phantom Tollbooth, in the new century! When two adventurous cousins accidentally extend the last day of summer by freezing time, they find the secrets hidden between the unmoving seconds, minutes, and hours are not the endless fun they expected. Otto and Sheed are the local sleuths in their zany Virginia town, masters of unraveling mischief using their unmatched powers of deduction. And as the summer winds down and the first day of school looms, the boys are craving just a little bit more time for fun, even as they bicker over what kind of fun they want to have. That is, until a mysterious man appears with a camera that literally freezes time. Now, with the help of some very strange people and even stranger creatures, Otto and Sheed will have to put aside their differences to save their town—and each other—before time stops for good.

Mehso-so

This was a bit of a cobbled up story. I liked the main characters but felt the plot was all over the place.

My homeschool book club met today to discuss this fantastic story of two cousins, Otto and Sheed, who are so bummed about school starting tomorrow that they accidentally freeze time 😬 It‘s a goofy fantasy with Phantom Tollbooth vibes but also deep thoughts about the passage of time. The kids had an in-depth discussion of what they would do if they could time travel (stop WWII, apparently) and programmed Sphero robots for a robot dance party! 🤖

Pickpick

This SF book written by Lamar Giles and illustrated by Dapo Adeola is about two cousins who extend the last day of summer by freezing time. They learn more than they should through the frozen time and learn that endless time is not the fun they thought would come. #ucflae3414f19

maciforster This goes with UDL principle 3.3 to help students visualize the book and EL strategy #36 to increase a students thinking. You can use S for this book because it has an interesting enough topic to act out but too long for reader‘s theatre. (edited) 5y
maciforster I wasn‘t able to find any activities for this book but you could tie in math when it comes to counting for hours and learning from mistakes 5y
AlyssaB Sounds like a great book to read for the kids. 5y
fabozzia This sounds like such a fun book! Either for the first day of school or last. Love it! 5y
DrSpalding Remember that the book it‘s self contains elements that could be taught in any language arts lesson. Look at the read, write, think website as a resource. 5y

Another PGH summer storm, another power outage 🙄 At least I have this seasonal #middlegrade SFF story of time-stopping antics by We Need Diverse Books cofounder Lamar Giles. (Love the Easter eggs of other WNDB authors as secondary characters!)

Tamra We need this - stacked! 5y

My poor son is having 5 teeth pulled this morning 🤯 That leaves me with about an hour in the waiting room. Hope I brought enough to read 😉

Gissy I hope he is ok! 5y

Happiness is going to get a book at the library and finding out one of your holds came in as well! 😬
