Fight Club | Chuck Palahniuk

#90sSpringFling

Question 7 of 7.

If you participated in #StepfordSummerParty and or #HellOween  buddy reads did you have a favorite book? How did Fight Club compare to the other two books? How did you feel about Palahniuk‘s writing compared to the others? Do you see any similarities between the three books? Would you consider Fight Club horror???

Megabooks I didn‘t do either of those buddy reads, but I have read The Stepford Wives. I think Fight Club is more suspense than horror, but I did find FC scarier! 6y
BookwormAHN I missed The Stepford Wives, but I really loved The Elementals. I liked the way Palahniuk writes but I didn't think that Fight Club was horror. I think it was more psychological suspense. 6y
BarbaraBB I agree, FC is much more psychological than horror. I didn‘t do either of the other buddy reads but I will be joining from now on ♥️ 6y

Librarybelle I‘ve participated in all 3! Stepford Wives was the spookiest for me, I think. The Elementals I didn‘t really enjoy and thought a little campy, though I know I was in the minority on that. Fight Club is more psychological. All three have been fun to read, and I‘m excited to see what the next read will be! 6y
TrishB I loved The Elementals. Didn‘t do Stepford Wives and bailed on Fight Club. 6y
peaKnit I‘ve participated in all three as well. I enjoyed The Stepford Wives the most I think because the 70‘s were such an odd time. I didn‘t think any of them were particularly scary, but all definitely weird 😊 I‘m with @Librarybelle on The Elementals, campy is a good word. 6y
Kalalalatja I read The Elementals and enjoyed it way more than FC! 6y
thereadingowlvina I didn't join The Stepford Wives, loved The Elementals and bailed on Fight Club. I didn't like the writing at all 😔 6y
DebinHawaii I joined in all three & Stepford Wives was my favorite. All had dark elements mixed with dark humor. I agree that Fight Club was more psychological suspense than horror. I listened to The Elementals on audio which I think enhanced its campiness & made it fun-scary. Fight Club just grossed me out. So for me, I'd rank them in the order we read them. Thanks for hosting @Cinfhen & @BarbaraBB looking forward to another buddy read. 🤗 6y
CarolynM I wouldn't have read any of them without the buddy reads but I felt that all of them were interesting reads. I think The Stepford Wives was the best of them. It was atmospheric and insightful and I actually cared about the characters. Thanks for the party @Cinfhen and @BarbaraBB 😘😘 6y
GripLitGrl The stepford wives was my fave the book had a more creepy vibe & diffrent ending to the film. So while i saw the movie the book felt diffrent & kept my interest. Elementals would be my second pick. fight club the book was so-so for me really translated better for me as a film. 6y
GripLitGrl I Definitely dont see fight club as horror genre. The other two books fit into the horor genre. 6y
batsy All three are such fascinating books that I probably would have put off for longer if I didn't do the buddy reads, so thank you for that ❤️😁 Stepford and Elementals win out over Fight Club, but I'm glad I read FC; it's definitely a book that disrupts one's perspective! 6y
erzascarletbookgasm I didn‘t do The Elementals (couldn‘t get a copy on time), SW and FC were great reads though I liked SW better. Wouldn‘t have picked up FC if not for the buddy read. Both are thought provoking and have loads of discussion points. FC is definitely not horror. 6y
Cinfhen First to my triple hit players @batsy @GripLitGrl @CarolynM @DebinHawaii @peaknit @Librarybelle Thank you for partying with me through the decades! It‘s been super fun and I‘ve found our discussions really insightful. For me, SW was my fav too. The story just worked on all the levels and it‘s withstood the test of time. I too thought Elementals was more of a spoof and campy is the perfect word. It was more atmospheric than scary. Hated FC 6y
Cinfhen @Megabooks @BookwormAHN @BarbaraBB @TrishB @Kalalalatja @thereadingowlvina See above comments and THANKS for sharing your LOVE of reading with me!!! These buddy reads are only successful because of your participation!! So fun to share music, fashion and books with you all!!! Hope you‘ll be back for #BelowZer00s in Jan 2020😜 6y
JaclynW @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB I missed the Stepford Wives buddy read 🙁 but I've done the last 2 reads. I liked both The Elementals and Fight Club. I agree with others about Fight Club being more psychological and Elementals more horror (campy, yes). I think Stepford Wives would be more MY kind of book than the other two so I've got to read it someday. I have it, just need to carve out the time. I've read 2 other books from that author and LOVED them both!! 6y
JaclynW @Cinfhen Count me in for #BelowZer00s ! 6y
BarbaraBB @JaclynW Yay! You can still nominate a book from the 00s - see @Cinfhen ‘s page! 6y
JaclynW @BarbaraBB Great! Thanks! I will start thinking. 6y

"If was as if the sand were a thing alive"—this is a quiet, contemplative book set in 20th-century Denmark, but naturally the first thing that came to mind when I read that was Michael McDowell's creepy The Elementals that we read for the #HELLoWeen buddy read. Sand will always fill me with foreboding now. Will I ever go to a beach again?
?

Velvetfur Oh gosh, that's certainly a whole new way of looking at sand...! 6y
Kalalalatja Oh that definitely reminds me of The Elementals! So creepy 😅 6y
batsy @Velvetfur It is! That slight undertone of menace... 6y

batsy @Kalalalatja Doesn't it just 😆 6y
LeahBergen That book has stayed with me, too 😆😆 6y
kspenmoll Like that quote very much! 6y
batsy @LeahBergen It leaves an impression, doesn't it! 6y
batsy @kspenmoll This is proving to be a lovely book. Slow and introspective and quiet, about a widow coming to terms with her sudden "freedom". 6y
Reggie Without reading your comments I started thinking of that book!! Lol 6y
batsy @Reggie Ha! 😆 6y
saresmoore Listen. I don‘t know how creepy sand is in books and whatnot, but you ain‘t experienced true dread ‘til you‘ve sunk your feet in up to your bare ant-bit ankles in the sandy soil of backwoods Florida. I mean. 6y
saresmoore Which you may have done while visiting your sister? There are some downright disturbing places in the vicinity of Gainesville. *shudder* Ooh, but now my desire to read The Elementals is renewed, in addition to my desire to remain safely distant from Florida for the time being... 🙃😳 Apologies for the weird sand tangent! 6y
batsy @saresmoore That sounds terrifying, Sara! Almost as terrifying as it is in The Elementals. (I've never visited my sister in Gainesville or been to the US because of the requirements re: finances one has to show to obtain a visa. We just make her come visit us, instead!) 6y
saresmoore Money and visas are dumb. I think we‘d all get along just fine without them. But, then, international travel is even dumber. At least, my anxiety thinks it is. 6y

I am so late to the #Helloween party that I‘m sure you all have finished off the punch and blown out the candles by now, but I am so glad that I read this! It was such fun for Halloween. I also learned that the author is from the same small town in Alabama that most of my family (including Sandy! 🐕) is from. Small world right?

britt_brooke I‘m late, too, haha! My library hold just became available and I doubt I‘ll get to it before it expires. 😩 6y
LeahBergen Wasn‘t it a fun one? 6y
Cinfhen So glad u showed up, late stragglers are always welcome! We are reading Fight Club for our #90sSpringFling ( March 20-22) if u feel like joining us💕 6y

Late starting and finishing the #HELLoWeen read but enjoyed it. Atmospheric and written with charm and restraint, but with plenty of flourish too. Weirdly it felt like reading a short story to me. Thanks for the invite to the #80sparty @Cinfhen x x

Bklover You know, now that you say that about it feeling like a short story, I think I know what you mean- I agree. 😊 6y
Cinfhen That‘s true for me too @Bklover but any longer and I would have lost patience with the book!!! 6y
Cinfhen Great review!! Glad u were able to party with us!!! Looking forward to #90sSpringFling 6y

3/5⭐Starts out w/ 1 wild funeral then slows down a bit giving you past and present family history of 2 Mobile Alabama families. The slow creepy factor in this book built up for one hell of an ending. This is a good creepy Halloween quick read perfect for this time of year!🎃👻 Thank you @Cinfhen for putting together #HELLoWEEN #8osparty 🤗🤗

#HELLoween #80sParty Yes, it was an 80‘s party, 1989 to be exact. This guy and I just celebrated our 24th wedding anniversary to boot. (We don‘t look quite this cool anymore 😂) Big hair was my jam 🤘🏻 I have really enjoyed this throwback party! Thanks @Cinfhen for organizing. Can‘t wait til the 90‘s!

Not the best horror I've read & more atmospheric than scary, but I enjoyed it. Listening to the audiobook was a big part of my enjoyment as the narrator (RC Bray) did a great job bringing all of the characters to life. I liked the Southern gothic feel, creepy houses in sand dunes setting, & the foreboding tone. It was a long lead up to the final, scariest parts, but worth an October listen. Mahalo to @Cinfhen for the #HELLoWEEN #80sParty fun! 😘👻

Cinfhen Love your collage and review!!! So glad you could make it to the #80sParty 😘#90sSpringFling is only 5/months away 😂😂😂 6y
JaclynW I liked the audio version too! It did take a while to get to the scary bits. 6y
mkittysabibliokitty OMGosh just read this myself! 6y

1. Can't believe this pic is seeing the light of day-only for @Cinfhen 🙄
2. It's a Halloween costume circa 82-84 (high school or just out) & not my standard dress
3. It's sprayed pinkish & styled (more) weirdly but that permy mullet is my own 😱
4. Not sure what I was going for-maybe 80s club?🤔
5. Check out the gold fridge & yellow & orange linoleum
6. I think it's a White Russian in the glass or something with Kahlua.🍹

This was my standard look in the 80‘s. Bangs (most likely cut by my older sister) and braids (on the side or in the back). I also remember how popular these plastic charm necklaces where when I was a kid. My sister (10 years older than me) had so many strands of Twist a Beads. #HELLoween #80sparty

Jerdencon I had those charm necklaces too!! 6y
Kappadeemom Twist a Beads!! 🤗 6y
