Late starting and finishing the #HELLoWeen read but enjoyed it. Atmospheric and written with charm and restraint, but with plenty of flourish too. Weirdly it felt like reading a short story to me. Thanks for the invite to the #80sparty @Cinfhen x x

Bklover You know, now that you say that about it feeling like a short story, I think I know what you mean- I agree. 😊 6y
Cinfhen That‘s true for me too @Bklover but any longer and I would have lost patience with the book!!! 6y
Cinfhen Great review!! Glad u were able to party with us!!! Looking forward to #90sSpringFling 6y

#HELLoween #80sParty Yes, it was an 80‘s party, 1989 to be exact. This guy and I just celebrated our 24th wedding anniversary to boot. (We don‘t look quite this cool anymore 😂) Big hair was my jam 🤘🏻 I have really enjoyed this throwback party! Thanks @Cinfhen for organizing. Can‘t wait til the 90‘s!

CouronneDhiver Awww, that‘s so cool. 👍🏽 6y

Not the best horror I've read & more atmospheric than scary, but I enjoyed it. Listening to the audiobook was a big part of my enjoyment as the narrator (RC Bray) did a great job bringing all of the characters to life. I liked the Southern gothic feel, creepy houses in sand dunes setting, & the foreboding tone. It was a long lead up to the final, scariest parts, but worth an October listen. Mahalo to @Cinfhen for the #HELLoWEEN #80sParty fun! 😘👻

Cinfhen Love your collage and review!!! So glad you could make it to the #80sParty 😘#90sSpringFling is only 5/months away 😂😂😂 6y
JaclynW I liked the audio version too! It did take a while to get to the scary bits. 6y
mkittysabibliokitty OMGosh just read this myself! 6y

1. Can't believe this pic is seeing the light of day-only for @Cinfhen 🙄
2. It's a Halloween costume circa 82-84 (high school or just out) & not my standard dress
3. It's sprayed pinkish & styled (more) weirdly but that permy mullet is my own 😱
4. Not sure what I was going for-maybe 80s club?🤔
5. Check out the gold fridge & yellow & orange linoleum
6. I think it's a White Russian in the glass or something with Kahlua.🍹

CarolynM Kahului and milk! I thought I was so cool ordering that in the early 80s😂 6y
Kappadeemom White Russians were definitely a thing in the 80s. My roommate in college threw ‘em up all over our staircase one night 😂😂😂 6y
batsy Fabulous 😆 6y

This was my standard look in the 80‘s. Bangs (most likely cut by my older sister) and braids (on the side or in the back). I also remember how popular these plastic charm necklaces where when I was a kid. My sister (10 years older than me) had so many strands of Twist a Beads. #HELLoween #80sparty

Jerdencon I had those charm necklaces too!! 6y
Kappadeemom Twist a Beads!! 🤗 6y
Karkar I used to love those plastic charm necklaces! The were so much fun 😍😍😍 6y

Bookzombie @Kappadeemom @Hooked_on_books @DebinHawaii @Eggs I need to check but I doubt my sister still has hers. I‘m sure I probably messed up a few as I was apt to sneak off with them. 6y
LeahBergen Cute!! 6y

Progress is slow as I've had very little reading time.... I am enjoying the atmosphere.... Now I know he wrote the Beetlejuice screenplay I keeping seeing Lydia Deetz as India though 😂😂
Switching to a different audiobook for an afternoon of housework but will get back to it later 👍👍
@Cinfhen #80sparty #HELLoWeen

Reviewsbylola Ok, I did not know he wrote Beetlejuice. Wow! 6y

Final Question: Were you satisfied with the ending???
Thanks to all who participated ❣️❣️❣️❣️I loved partying and reading with you!!! I‘m already thinking ahead to a #90sSpringFling March 20-22. Look for details in the coming days 🤘🏼😜💃🏽 #Helloween #80sParty

Cinfhen I thought the ending felt rushed but I liked India‘s last line when she notes that the twins are Savages and not McCray‘s. The whole part with eating Odessa‘s eyeballs was too ridiculous for me 6y
Librarybelle The ending scene at Beldarme was grotesque, and while I felt the spookiest with this scene, it also felt rushed. Like the climax in a b-rated horror movie. The loose ends tie up seemed rather quick too. Maybe there was a potential for a sequel with the twins?? I almost did say aloud, “You really went with those names?” 6y
Cinfhen It was almost silly by this point (at least for me @Librarybelle ) (edited) 6y

AmyG That photo! 😬 I agree, the ending felt not only rushed but not developed enough. I also will say that I liked the characters more than the horror aspect. And my favorite part was India eating Odessa‘s eyes. 🤣 6y
TrishB I thought India eating the eyeballs was to make sure Odessa didn‘t become one of the elementals because she couldn‘t see 🤷‍♀️ ending was good for me and along the lines of what I anticipated really. 6y
Cinfhen I think the eating of the eyeballs was to gain Odessa‘s “insight” IDK @TrishB that was a little over the top for me but I thought it went along well with the rest of this book @AmyG like it made perfect sense that the 13 yr old sophisticated NYer would have no qualms eating a set of eyeballs whilst chasing an elemental with cleavers 👻👻👻 6y
batsy I wish there was more of "the elementals" tied to the Savage family, but I guess that would go against the general point of the elementals, & the idea of something evil that has no understandable source seems all the more terrifying. I thought the eyes-eating was interesting because throughout the book there was good buildup with India & Odessa, starting with the photographs—Odessa was already helping India to see in a certain way. 6y
Cinfhen Nice @batsy I forgot that Odessa had guided India in the photo taking 6y
Reggie I was heartbroken in the end because of what happens to Dauphin. There‘s a lovely paragraph about him not being able to be the last to go to sleep and Odessa being the one to hold his hand until he slept and now it was Leigh he wrapped himself around. And also to think that you might have escaped the one person in the family who hates you because they‘re dead but then they sand manifest to slit your throat really got to me. Fuck that sand demon. (edited) 6y
Reggie Lol 6y
Cinfhen Oh @Reggie you‘re so poetic 😘😘😘 “Fuck that sand demon” (edited) 6y
BookwormAHN @Reggie I was also really upset that Dauphin died. I was also rather disturbed by the names Leigh had picked out for her twins. Using those names seemed like a bad omen. 6y
Kalalalatja I‘m so with you @Reggie Dauphine dying wasn‘t okay! 6y
Bookzombie @Reggie I felt the same about Dauphine. In fact I was angry with Luker and India for letting him go up to the third floor alone. Never split up! 6y
Bookzombie The ending might have been a bit rush but I was pretty pleased with it (except for Dauphine‘s death). Like @Librarybelle I couldn‘t believe the names Leigh picked for the twins. 🤦🏼‍♀️ 6y
Sweettartlaura Perfect? No. But satisfied? Yes. For the genre/the era/the type of monster they were fighting, this was all pretty standard. Yet the writing, characters, & setting elevated it. Plus I listened to the audiobook, & the ending played well - couldn‘t stop listening after a certain point. 6y
Reggie @Bookzombie Lol. I think that‘s why I get upset with new horror movies. We should all know better by now. 6y
DebinHawaii Great pic! ???I liked the ending, (of course, except for Dauphine! ?) with all of the drama and some gore, finally. ?I agree @Cinfhen that India's last line was the best and I liked the "uh-oh, here we go again" feeling it gave. Yes to @Sweettartlaura the ending did play really well in the audiobook. ? 6y
DebinHawaii And a big THANK YOU for the all of the 80s fun @Cinfhen Looking forward to the #90sSpringFling !🎉 6y
bookandbedandtea @BookwormAHN @Reggie @Librarybelle I too was upset over Dauphin's death. He was such a sweet, caring man despite having lived his whole life knowing his mother hated him and I enjoyed seeing him surrounded by people who appreciated him. And Leigh! Those baby names! What was she thinking? Loved India's last line. 6y
bookandbedandtea @Cinfhen Thanks for leading us. This was fun! 6y
Cinfhen I‘m soooo happy you guys were back to party with me @bookandbedandtea @DebinHawaii can‘t wait for #90sSpringFling 🌷🌻🌹🦋🌼🌸🌺 6y
LeahBergen And I‘m assuming those little twins got matching little twin daggers to carry throughout their lives?? 😆 I was generally okay with the ending as I find I never enjoy the endings of horror novels (or thrillers for that matter) much anyway. This one was the same; I loved the beginning and learning about the history and customs of that bat-shit crazy family far more than the eventual resolution of the plot. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
Reviewsbylola Thank you Cindy!! 6y
Pamwurtzler I was good with the ending. I‘m not a fan of really creepy stuff so this was just enough for me. I loved the crazy family! Thanks for hosting us @Cinfhen ! 6y
Bklover I was okay with the ending except for Dauphin dying. I‘m finding @Reggie ‘s reaction to this book fascinating. Thanks Cindy for hosting! Can‘t wait for #90sspringfling! Oh, and how the hello you pronounce Dauphin!!!!!???? (edited) 6y
TrishB These discussions have been awesome 😘 6y
CarolynM I was quite upset about Dauphin (I had assumed that Odessa wasn't going to survive) but overall I found the ending satisfactory. Thanks for a great party @Cinfhen. It's been a fun weekend with everyone who has contributed. Look forward to next time😘 6y
Reggie @Bklover lol, thanks, books speak to all of us on many levels. In my head I was say Doffin. Like it rhymes with coffin. But maybe it is said Doughfin. Who knows, in Harry Potter that kid named Seamus was said C-mus in my head until I heard them say Shame-us. Lol And yes, thank you @Cinfhen for this event, it was so fun!!!! 6y
Mdargusch Yes! But I need a sequel! Thanks for motivating me to read this! It‘s been so much fun! 6y
Bklover @Reggie I said See-mus in my head too. 😳 6y
Cinfhen Loved the discussions and seeing everyone‘s posts!!! You guys made this so much fun!! Thank you @LeahBergen @Reviewsbylola @Pamwurtzler @Bklover @TrishB @CarolynM @Reggie @Mdargusch mark your calendars for #90sSpringFling March 20-22 🎉🎉🎉 should we stick with the horror theme???? 6y
Mdargusch I‘m up for anything! 6y
Pamwurtzler Me too!! 6y
Cinfhen Im having a hard time putting together book choices @Pamwurtzler @Mdargusch but I‘m almost there!!! 6y
Bklover Can‘t wait for the next choice! Any genre is fine with me. 6y
GripLitGrl I was the ending was great! Excited to participate in the next one hopefully I'll finish on time😉 6y
Balibee146 Bated thanks @Cinfhen 6y
ephemeralwaltz I am THE LATEST to this. Just finished reading😂😂 it wasn't my favorite, that's why I kept sidetrscking it for other reads... I don't know if it was the characters (I couldn't stand any of them) or the story itself (which didn't make any sense in the end, I like getting explanations and backstories to spirits/demons/monsters). The ending felt rushed anf Iagree about Dauphin❤️ but I'm just glad it's over tbh 6y
