BookishMarginalia I used to read the #OprahBookClub picks once upon a time. Now I dabble in different picks as the mood strikes. My fave book club read this year is from my Monday book club: 8h
RaeLovesToRead I've only just heard about the Audacious book club and now I am excited! 🥰 8h
lil1inblue @RaeLovesToRead Tell me more.... 🤓 8h
See All 20 Comments
RaeLovesToRead @lil1inblue It's Roxane Gay's book club! 7h
lil1inblue I read so many good books this year; it's hard to pick. But this is one that I wish I had read with a group, because it was soooo good: 7h
AmyG No clue what book that is. I used to read Oprah‘s, too. Now I find that I am wnjoying some of Jenna Bush‘s books. 7h
lil1inblue @RaeLovesToRead OMG, now I'm excited, too! *runs to google* 7h
dabbe What a fun game! I enjoyed finishing the #noplacelikeholmes buddy read where we read the whole canon. I also enjoyed finished the #shardlakebr where we read all the Matthew Shardlake books by C.J. Sansom. And I loved all the books we read this year with the #hashtagbrigade, led by the invincible @BarkingMadRead. 🩵☃️🩶 7h
TheBookHippie @RaeLovesToRead oh I‘m so in for this. 7h
TheBookHippie I have tried IRL Bookclub 😵‍💫🫣 they don‘t read the book and get together to bash their partners and I want no part of that. 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 back in the day I would check out Oprah but it‘s been a long long long time. My favourite “bookclub” is my #SUNDAYBUDDYREAD and I think our November book was my favorite (edited) 7h
TheBookgeekFrau I read Flowers for Algernon for an IRL bookclub. Haven't followed a celebrity book club since the OG Oprah one. I have to say I kind of resent those book club seals on book covers; they interfere with the esthetic 😤 As for the trivia question yeah, no clue 😂 6h
Karisa @TheBookHippie That was my experience too! So awkward showing up as the only one that wanted to talk about the book. 🤓😂🤣 5h
Karisa I‘ve read so many great ones this year with Litsy people! Life with Picasso, 1984, Fearless, Woodworking, Wild Dark Shore, and The Death of the Author are some that first come to mind. Always a great discussion with the book groups on Litsy! 🥰💗🥰💗 5h
TheBookHippie @Karisa SOLIDARITY. 4h
lil1inblue @karisa @TheBookHippie I'm glad I'm not alone in my IRL book club experience. ? Not only do they not read or discuss the book, but it always ends up being a book I'm meh about reading. I much prefer litsy "clubs". ? 4h
Karisa @lil1inblue 🎯 🥰 3h
WanderingBookaneer @TheBookHippie and @Karisa : I run a book club, Books on Tap, that meets at a local brewery. We don‘t have assigned books. People just share what they read during the past month. Some of us bring books to hand out after we‘ve read them. 3h
TheBookHippie @WanderingBookaneer I want to join. ♥️ 3h
Karisa @WanderingBookaneer That‘s the way to do it! 😊🥰 3h

ElizaMarie Ha, this ritual sounds lovely! I mean, what can go wrong when you pass a murder weapon among your friends? Love the pacing of this book so far :) 12h
Ruthiella It‘s all fun and games until someone gets murdered! 😱😅 12h

Cuilin I know I shouldn‘t, but I would so join in on this game. 😬 12h
peanutnine Did none of their parents teach them not to play with knives?!! 11h
eeclayton That's not a game I'd be comfortable taking part in 😳 10h
TheAromaofBooks I'm like... isn't this thing SHARP!? 😂 8h
willaful @peanutnine I'm buddy watching an English Christmas program (The Box of Delights) and someone commented that all English children are 40 years old. Conversely, I think all English adults may be children. 😂

It does seem to me that if/when someone gets murdered, Albert Campion is indirectly responsible...
8h
dabbe And they're going to pass around this dagger in the dark? Whattheheck???? 7h
lil1inblue @Cuilin Honestly, I would probably join in, too. 😅 3h
lil1inblue Murder aside, it's dark... Won't hands get cut? 😱 3h
Bookwormjillk Let the ritual begin! This book is wild already. I love it. 3h
mcctrish What could go wrong ?! 31m

The Grapes of Wrath | John Steinbeck
post image
Pickpick

I didn't intend to read The Grapes of Wrath this year, but I've always meant to and @BarkingMadRead and the #hashtagbrigade reading it in November seemed like a perfect opportunity. It's a heavy book made all the more heavy by how timely it is right now. Steinbeck's writing is amazing. It's been several years since I read East of Eden and I'm thinking it may be time for a reread soon.

I've been forgetting to post my #BookspinBingo lists lately. 😅

Here's my December list. I have a multitude of christmas or winter books to choose from, so I'll go with mood reading for this month.

I have buddyreads for #NaturaLitsy #VirginiaBloomsberries #BookedInTime #SheSaid #AAM #LosersClub #HashtagBrigade #QueerBC 📚

Starting with the tagged. 🙂

Bookwormjillk I had trouble keeping everyone apart as usual but I‘m sure if I keep going it will eventually make sense. 2d
KAO I‘d never heard of this book or the author, so it‘s all brand new to me! I looked it up online to find the original publication date to be 1929. (My paperback copy didn‘t have that info.) Meanwhile, the repetition of “Glad it‘s not mine” makes me smile. More to come on that, for sure! 2d

Ruthiella @Bookwormjillk Me too. So many characters! I am sure they will all become more recognizable in future chapters. 🤞 2d
Cuilin Can I be added to the tag list please? 2d
BarkingMadRead @Bookwormjillk @Ruthiella the first chapters are always the hardest, until the characters have a chance to make an impression! 2d
ElizaMarie Can I be added please :) 1d
mcctrish @KAO it‘s new to me too, I have a feeling I might be repeating #imgladitsnotmine in my head all day 1d
dabbe Sounds like this might be a locked-room mystery! 1d
AllDebooks Please count me in 😊 1d
ElizaMarie So many peeps! 1d
eeclayton I'm having a super busy day but I'll catch up tomorrow! 1d
lil1inblue Had a long day, but may I be added also? ☺️ This is brand new for me, too! I think Meggie is going to be amusing. 1d
julieclair Please add me to the tag list. 😍 Remembering who the characters are will be easier once we give them all nicknames! 😁 23h
Daisey Please add me to the tag list. I wasn‘t sure, but 2 days into your posts, I‘m sure I can fit it in. 7h

Panpan

Depressing slog. Put this in the category of its a classic, I never have to read again. But thank you @BarkingMadRead for the #HashtagBrigade as an Okie I wanted to read.

HOWEVER, Sallisaw is actually closer to Arkansas while it was affected by The Depression it WASN'T part of the Dust Bowl. It always bugs me when authors get State wrong. There's a very big difference between the flat of the panhandle and green country of eastern Oklahoma. 📍

BarkingMadRead Ohhhhh that‘s interesting 2d
dabbe Oklahoma is quite misunderstood, isn't it. I need to revisit the musical OKLAHOMA for a pick-me-up about this lovely state. “There's a bright golden haze on the meadow ....“ 💚💚💚 2d

Mehso-so

I gotta say “so-so”. Sure the writing is beautiful, but would I recommend it to anyone? No. It‘s too much. Even though the ending wasn‘t what I expected- it wasn‘t enough to encourage others to get there.

#LazloJustBecause

@BarkingMadRead thanks for hosting #HashtagBrigade book

ElizaMarie Wow!!! Didn't expect that! 2d
BarbaraJean I knew about the controversial ending, but I didn‘t realize it would be the ending ending. Like the last scene. All of this and then THAT. I can‘t. And what was up with Rose of Sharon‘s little mysterious smile?!? 😳 That took it over the edge from uncomfortable to creepy. Still. This was a relentlessly sad and infuriating masterpiece. 2d

eeclayton #mysoulhurtstoo What a heartbreaking story. Thanks @BarkingMadRead and #HashtagBrigade for this buddy read. It's a beautifully written and tragically relevant book, but I wouldn't have been able to finish it if it wasn't for you. 2d
Crinoline_Laphroaig I had to finish before Thanksgiving, I didn't want to be reading with family here. My reaction was WTF? That's it? 2d
lauraisntwilder While the ending is unexpected, Steinbeck was setting us up for something like that the whole time. It's another example of how the poor are only able to rely on other poor people, to the point of sacrificing their own comfort or propriety. There are no strangers anymore and everyone is family. I think Rose of Sharon is glad for something good to come from her heartbreak. Just my take. What a book!!! 2d
Bookwormjillk I had remembered the ending but not the scene with Uncle John and the baby. That hit me hard this read. Also reading this made want to try to do better about my bitterness towards my husband‘s cousin living in my basement 😂 Thanks as always @BarkingMadRead looking forward to starting something short tomorrow. 2d
dabbe I just couldn't reread it this time. After having to teach it in high school (as well as OF MICE AND MEN), I couldn't face the bleakness this time. But, oh, how I love Steinbeck's writing. Here's for a short read in December! Thanks @BarkingMadRead for your on-point #hashtags--as always. 🩵☃️💙 2d
KAO I had never read this, and I‘m so glad I did it this month with you all. I found the writing truly wonderful, even though the unfolding of events really brought heartbreak after heartbreak. I do wish Steinbeck could have given us more hope for these tough characters at the end. Tragic! 2d
Bklover Well. I‘m glad I read it. @BarkingMadRead made it possible, but I am glad it‘s over. Beautiful writing. East of Eden I could read again- this one nope. Thanks @BarkingMadRead ❤️ 2d
KAO @Bklover I loved East of Eden too—and agree that I could read it again. This Grapes of Wrath journey was just so endlessly sad. I‘m still glad that I read it though. 1d
Bklover Me too, @KAO I know that this was the only group I‘d get through it with! 1d
