Bailedbailed

Well this is the second Ishiguro book I can't finish. I really liked Never Let Me Go but this one and The Unconsoled are just too abstract for me I guess. Gave up at page 150.

Darklunarose @DGRachel 😂 thanks…I‘m not sure what else I could have write. It was “oh I love this”, “this is good” then”nope, I‘m not going further!” 3w

I‘m DnFing this one. Not that it isn‘t enjoyable. It is just a slow read what I can‘t get into right now. It was a library random pick, mainly for the pretty cover. 😅 #hailthebail ?

dabbe YES! #hailthatbail! 🤩🤩🤩 3w
Cuilin 🙌🙌 I‘ve had to DNF a few myself recently #HailTheBail 3w

Prairiegirl_reading When I first about heard about this book I immediately went to buy it. And I may have read about 5 pages, maybe. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2mo
Mollyanna This was a so-so read for me. Probably should have bailed… I remember very little about it. #hailthebail 2mo

Bailedbailed

Life‘s too short to be voluntarily annoyed and hate read this any longer.
I loathe this MC.
There should be a sub genre of ‘menopause‘ books- insufferable privileged women spending money to find solutions to their life.
Definitely a lot to discuss here.

Ruthiella Love this review! I liked it for what it was. July pushes boundaries, but your assessment is not wrong. 😆 2mo
Librarybelle Love this review! One of my favorite bailed reviews I‘ve read! 2mo

squirrelbrain You might still be able to contribute at the weekend! 🤞 If it doesn‘t upset you too much…. 2mo
Susanita I‘m hanging in there so far, but yeah she is…a lot. 2mo
TrishB @Ruthiella I think it‘s because I don‘t think the boundaries are real. Woman has mid life epiphany needs a lot of sex. 🤷‍♀️ lots to discuss! 2mo
TrishB @squirrelbrain I think I have a lot to say! Probably none of it relevant 😁 2mo
TrishB @Susanita you‘re very diplomatic 😁 2mo
Susanita Actually, I read a few more pages and decided to bail too! 2mo

dabbe I think I'll skip this one based on this review. #hailthatbail! 🤩🤩🤩 2mo
Megabooks I‘d still love to hear your thoughts. Seriously! I love menopause reads, but I can definitely see how they‘re marmite. 2mo
BarbaraBB Lots to discuss. I am not a fan of menopause books per se but I liked this one much more than Sandwich, which I know you preferred. I do think J won‘t read the new Lombardo soon, having enough of menopause books for now! 2mo
Hooked_on_books I thought the menopause bit had a lot of potential and could be interesting, if the book would stop focusing on sex for two seconds and act like there‘s more to life than that. I don‘t blame you at all for bailing. I probably should have. 2mo
Oryx Love this review! I've been so looking forward to seeing the reviews of this come in 2mo
DGRachel I could not agree more! I love this review. 2mo
TheBookHippie I bailed… I couldn‘t even hate read it 🫣😬😵‍💫😝 2mo
TrishB @Megabooks I definitely have plenty of thoughts! 2mo
TrishB @BarbaraBB I think I liked Sandwich as there was some humility, normality and humour! But still a bit privileged. I didn‘t find any of those in this one! Like you I may give them a miss for a bit. 2mo
TrishB @Hooked_on_books agree. It seems the only ‘solution‘ to the menopause is to throw off the shackles of life and have lots of sex. Hard enough getting the menopause taken seriously as it is. 2mo
TrishB @Oryx @DGRachel @TheBookHippie it definitely makes for strong opinions 😁 2mo
TrishB @Susanita 👍🏻 2mo
Caroline2 “Voluntarily annoyed” love that expression Trish!! Yep, life is defo too short to spend with books that wind you up!! ? for me, the real privilege came later when she‘s all blasé about her annual gynaecologist appt who then just did a hormone test and got her on hrt like it was nothing. Cor, can you imagine that in this country!???? 2mo
TrishB @Caroline2 getting the app would be one battle, being taken seriously would be a step too far! Fantasy. 2mo

I'm so disappointed to bail on my #Bookedintime selection. I adore the landscape and nature descriptions. However, it does feel overly preachy, and I'm just not in the right mindset atm to persevere. I will pick it up to try again, at some point. I do feel the fault is mine, not the book.

@Cuilin @dabbe

Cuilin Oh, I totally get it. I‘m struggling with the puritanical preaching in Little Women right now. Grateful that it‘s only a chapter a day. I DNF‘d my book for this month too. I‘m going to see if I can get something else but yeah, I get it. #HailTheBail 🙌 3mo

Bailedbailed

This book feels like the cliched love child of John Hughes and Gossip Girl. I'm in the vast minority of readers who didn't enjoy it. First of all, I feel like it's all been done/said before. The student with the scholarship who feels like an outcast in their shabby clothes compared to everyone else's designer labels (overdone and cliched). The Queen Bee rich girl (predictable). (1/?)

TheIntrovertedDodoBird The anonymous bully (seen it all before). The elite private school (mind-numbingly unoriginal). The beautiful dead girl (I'm pretty sure a girl who has just been violently killed by a car is not going to look doll-like!). Niveus Academy is just a cesspool of tropes and stereotypes. It promises to address serious topics: institutional racism, white supremacy, homophobia and social injustice, and it achieves just that - mostly. (2/?) 3mo
TheIntrovertedDodoBird Kudos to Àbíké-Íyímídé for delving into these very real issues, but everything else about this book felt shallow. I can't help but be critical over some of the discriminative undertones. The perpetuation and the labelling of Black people - practically Black men - as inherently homophobic and violent towards the LGBTQ+ community. (3/?) 3mo
TheIntrovertedDodoBird Consistently portraying all the female friendships or interactions with misogynistic connotations - constant backstabbing, being catty to one another, microaggressive bullying, physical violence. The poignancy was diminished by the novel's overall superficiality and dramatized plot. There were a few clumsily worded sentences and others that just made me roll my eyes. (4/?) 3mo

TheIntrovertedDodoBird I've read copious amounts of YA but this one just felt immature and overcompensates the teenage angst for the typical quasi-American dark academia experience, which made it impossible to invest in the characters and not find everyone infuriating. For a book tackling some serious topics, I can't help but feel like it breezes over others; the nonconsensual outing of a student, the distribution of graphic videos, and physical assault. (5/?) 3mo
TheIntrovertedDodoBird Also, it feels like a red flag when an author cheekily gives their book a five-star review on Goodreads. I decided to DNF halfway through when I found myself skipping whole paragraphs. Rant over. (6/6)

emmasm08 After that review I‘d be too embarrassed to even pick the book up 😂! Thank you for reading it on behalf of the rest of us - definitely giving it a miss - sounds dreadful ! 3mo
dabbe Definitely #hailthatbail! 🤩🤩🤩 3mo
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @emmasm08 Opps, I went on a bit of a rampage with that review 🤣. I feel like I took one for the Litsy Team by reading it (read: forcing myself to stick at it before promptly giving up at the halfway mark) 😂. It was so, so dreadful. I can not explain the number of five-star reviews it has been given! I'll re-sell it on Vinted to a poor unsuspecting buyer 😬🤣. 3mo
emmasm08 I loved your review ! It made me laugh a lot - it‘s happened to me too - a book that gets out standing reviews and you are left thinking - how did that happen !!!! 😂xx 3mo
TheIntrovertedDodoBird @emmasm08 Thank you! 😂 Yessss! There's so many awful bestsellers! Seriously, how DOES it happen?! All of those five star reviews, and there's me, trying not to hurl the book through the wall! 🤣 xx 3mo
