The Rabbit Back Literature Society | Pasi Ilmari Jskelinen

I read the description of this before the English translation released and it haunted me until I hunted down a copy. I started it last not, trying to decide if I wanted to read this or the next Charlie Fox thriller… and didn‘t look up until I was a quarter of the way through.

It‘s become a new tradition for me, reading slow books set in cold climates during our annual end of summer beach week.

One of the rare cases of movie is better than book.I saw Juho Kuosmanen‘s adaptation&was not aware that he‘d taken some liberties which make the film compelling&emotionally engaging. The book is not convincing bc the girl character is too aloof&the man-much older than her-a despicable misogynist, antisemitic drunk who beats his wife.In the movie the girl and man are the same age&he‘s rough&rude but also kind&gentle&thus believable that 👇

Anna40 they connect&she‘d develop feelings for him. I wanted to see that tenderness&that bond&connection in the novel but it seems impossible to me that any sane woman could connect with that scumbag. What I really enjoyed was the descriptions of landscape&the Soviet Union, the journey from Moscow to Mongolia was what kept me from bailing. 6mo
CogsOfEncouragement I won this book in a readathon years ago and did not like it at all. I didn‘t know there was a movie, but I sure wouldn‘t have wanted to watch it. lol 6mo
Anna40 @CogsOfEncouragement I don‘t blame you, I wouldn‘t have bought the book if I‘d known … the film has flaws but I loved the relationship&connection between the characters & was curious to see how the author conveyed that in writing … well she didn‘t. The man is a scumbag I‘d be scared of. I‘d certainly wouldn‘t want to hang out or spend several days&nights! alone in a compartment with him 6mo

Yikes !Am I not saying in every post I need to downsize ? There is a 20%off sale at Half Price Books that lasts through Monday. These Sillitoes are not considered as good as The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner ,but looked interesting. Also , have been on the hunt for Lawrence Blocks first Matthew Scudder novel for a friend, there it was.I have an excuse for 7 brothers a major novel of Finland sure, why not ? early Forrester I haven‘t read 👍

Ruthiella I just set aside10 read books to donate and re-shelved the same amount even though I probably won‘t re-read them. It‘s an everlasting balancing act! 😊 6mo
Leftcoastzen @Ruthiella wow , that sounds so familiar!😁 6mo
lil1inblue Seven Brothers is a good find! I believe the English translation is out of print. 6mo

I'm not gonna lie, passive absorption of popular culture meant reading the first Moomins book was a bit of a shock as the story was a bit less standard little kid pablum in narration than I was expecting, and the Moomins don't yet look like the Moomins I've seen on the internet (I believe an animated show was produced as well?). 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/2 As lovely as the water colour-ish cover is, I wish the pages inside had full colour paintings instead of brown/black sketches and what might be charcoal drawings. You spoiled me with the cover art! Overall I get the long running success of adventures around these creatures. There is an inherent charm. 6mo

I'm so sorry to clutter your feed with a picture of a lemon ?, but I couldn't resist buying this amazing fruit, it looked so tempting! Now, to justify buying it, I'm making a White Lady cocktail ?, and to justify posting about it, I'm going to read the story in which I first came across the drink, Tove Jansson's eponymous "White Lady" from the tagged story collection ???

TieDyeDude I'm glad you got that all sorted BEFORE you started drinking 😅 7mo
Bookwomble @TieDyeDude I genuinely fell in love with that lemon first then had to think of something to do with it 😄 It's an Italian Amalfi lemon, and a tad more expensive than your common lemon, so a bit of a treat, but it sure did taste good, even before I added it to gin! 7mo
batsy Never apologise for lovely photos! It's like a still life painting featuring lemon 😁🍋 7mo
Anna40 😆 I like the lemon too. It‘s gray here in the north of Michigan so sunny yellow is nice 😉 7mo
