Mehso-so

I‘m on the fence between a pick and so-so. I‘ve read enough of Jacobs to know what to expect. This was entertaining enough, though maybe not his best. But not bad either.

It‘s not in any database on Litsy, Goodreads, or StoryGraph, but I‘ve been reading this book about my 6G grandfather, who came over pre-Revolution, first to Bermuda, then Virginia. So not much other reading happening. #genealogy Sometimes I get the bug to add another person to my #familyTree

AmyG Wow! 3y
mandarchy I'm guilty of getting that bug. I found some living cousins during the Covid lockdown because the internet freed up. 3y
Lcsmcat @mandarchy That‘s exciting. Have you stayed in touch? 3y

mandarchy @Lcsmcat sadly one died of covid shortly after. The other cousin is in touch on FB. We have shared images of heirlooms and information. I had photos and she had the family Bible. She also has an elaborate valentine my 3X great grandfather gave to her 2X great grandmother his 2nd wife. His first wife was my 3X great grandmother. The two women were aunt/niece so we have more shared DNA than you'd expect. 3y
mandarchy And those two women we descend from were Spencer's that link us to prices Diana. So William is also my cousin! 3y
Amiable I‘m an amateur genealogist as well! I totally understand that bug. I will go through spurts where I‘m obsessed with tracking down one particular snippet of information. I spent a year tracking down and requesting death certificates for various family members until I finally hit the jackpot and discovered the name of the village in Latvia where my 2x-great grandfather was born. It‘s such a rush when that happens! (edited) 3y
Lcsmcat @mandarchy How great that you connected before they died. And that‘s some interesting lineage. 😀 3y
Lcsmcat @Amiable There‘s nothing like that feeling! I‘ve only gotten three lines back to the original immigrant, and only one of those was post-revolution, so I‘m wading through eras of few records. And it‘s not helped by the fact that I‘m so much more interested in the women than the men. 😀 3y

Al-Awafi is a small village in #Oman. Time seems to have passed without any changes. People live their lives as they have for centuries in this desolate part of the country. But this is the 20th century and things ARE changing. This book tells how the community deals with current times. The story is a combination of folklore and magic realism, of fiction and journalism.

ChaoticMissAdventures Patrick Radden Keefe was recently in the NYT book podcast. He is such an amazing researcher. This is on my TBR. 4y
Breanne1 I‘m almost done with this one and it‘s really well written (which I expected) and a page turner. Radden Keefe doesn‘t disappoint once again. 4y
Cinfhen @Breanne1 the more positive reviews, the more excited I become!! Can‘t wait (edited) 4y
alisiakae Ooh, this sounds really good. Randomly, we were just talking about the Sacklers at dinner recently, and the lack of accountability they‘ve managed to have. Definitely stacking this one! 3y

A fascinating look at Kim Jong Un‘s dictatorship written by a former CIA analyst. Prior to this book, I had read accounts by defectors or other more personal accounts. This, however, is a look at Jong Un and the other Kims as leaders and power brokers. The most fascinating chapters were towards the end where she analyzed his pivot to diplomacy with Trump and other world leaders and why he continues to be a dangerous presence. #pop21 #familytree ⬇️

Megabooks @Cinfhen you‘re welcome! I caught it on Instagram because it had just come out in paperback so I figured the hardcover would be discounted - and it was! 👍🏻 4y

Mehso-so

This book details the author‘s exploration of the meaning of family, genealogy with all of its good and its bad, and the hope that people will treat others more kindly if we realized we are all related in some way. Jacobs writes in a journal format, outlining his learned knowledge and comical anecdotes while describing his preparation to plan the largest family reunion of all time. It was funny and interesting but not a must-read for me.

The Mountains Sing | Nguyen Phan Que Mai

Pickpick

The Mountains Sing is a harrowing story of intergenerational trauma that spans the Land Reforms of the 1950s through the post-Vietnam War era. At its core is Dieu Lan, the grandmother, an incredibly resilient woman who perseveres through horrific tragedies. Dieu Lan‘s flashbacks alternate from the coming of age story of her granddaughter, Guava. Reconciliation, forgiveness, and familial bonds are recurring themes. Definitely a 5⭐️ read.

Butterfinger Wonderful review. 4y
alisiakae @Butterfinger you‘re fast, I hadn‘t even finished my tags yet! 🤣 I don‘t think I would have found this book if it wasn‘t for #foodandlit, and it‘s definitely one of my favorites so far this year! 4y

alisiakae And after some thought, I‘m also going to use this for #booked2021 #underrated title, after realizing this hasn‘t been nominated for a single award. It‘s definitely an award-worthy book in my opinion! @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘m glad to see your review! I picked this up on an Audible Daily Deal last year and plan to use it for #vietnam also! 4y
Cinfhen Great review and I need a #familytree 💕🙌🏻 4y
alisiakae @Cinfhen It was a pleasant surprise to open the book and see a family tree! I didn't have anything picked out for that prompt yet. 4y
alisiakae @BarbaraTheBibliophage I think you would like it! Just make sure to read it at a time when you are in the mood or able to handle a very depressing and heartbreaking story. 4y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft Thank you for that advice ... much needed ... 4y
BarbaraBB That is quite a recommendation 🤍 4y
Librarybelle I recently checked this out from the library for #Vietnam . Wonderful review! 4y
Texreader This was such a hard read, and not the best point in my life to have read (listened to) it. Your review is excellent. And your advice to find a good time in your life when you can handle such sad sad stuff to read it. It was a lot to take in. But I also agree, so well written. I loved the messages in it as well 4y

Welcome to #FamilyOfMeaning. Take yourself and your family (if you have no family, feel free to use your friends), translate their names into meanings. Then take those meanings to the books. Pick a book that you think goings with that person's meaning. Try to fill up the #FamilyTree. This challenge is a year long (or longer if you have a large family), so please take your time. I hope you enjoy yourself with this one! Everyone Welcome!!

LazyOwl This is really unique idea, love this 4y

This book is very clever. It‘s simple. It's about your family and how you wouldn‘t be you without your parents, and your parents, wouldn't be them without your grandparents, etc. The book is 2 sided, mom‘s side and dad‘s side, and while the wording has almost no changes, the illustrations really show each side of the family and the difference of where they came from.
