Happy Labor Day in the USA! Photos by Lewis Hine of workers building the Empire State Building.Hope some Littens are getting a little extra reading in !

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Love these photos! ❤️😱❤️ 4y
Leftcoastzen @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm He was an amazing photographer. He tended to take photos of working people. 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm One of my absolute favorite photographs is the “Lunch atop a Skyscraper” one that‘s fairly famous. I think it might have been the same photographer? The name sounds familiar. 4y
Leftcoastzen @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm it looks like much of his work but I think that one was attributed to Charles Ebbets when he was working on photo shoot of Rockefeller Center ,I love that one too! 4y
MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm Aha, I Googled it and you are definitely correct! 😅👍 4y

This is a graphic novel; was very good. There is history of the subway and the Empire State Building, along with real historical photos included. I‘ve only been to New York once (and I was on the subway, but found it pretty confusing!), but found the information really interesting. The story itself was also about friendship, but really I think the point was the historical information (geared toward younger readers, but still really interesting).

This MF, Caldecott Honor is another story that allows the illustrations to tell the story. The illustrations show a little boy on a field trip to the Empire State Building & meets a cloud who gives him a ride to “sector 7” (where all the clouds are made) they are all different shapes, but are bored of them. So he starts to draw new shapes for them & creates happiness & friendships.

Summerm This book would best be RA and S. The UDL principles 1.1 (offer a ways of customizing the display of information) & 2.1(clarify vocabulary and symbols). The EL strategies for this would best be 6 (Continually monitor students‘ comprehension) & 15 (reinforce the key ideas you present again and again). #ucflae3414su19 5y
Summerm 2.1 (clarify vocabulary and symbols can help the readers understand what is going on. Since there are no words, focusing not the pictures is crucial.

15 reinforcing what you see in the book can keep them interested and want to learn more rather than ignoring the important parts (illustrations of the clouds).

DrSpalding He is famous for his wordless picture books. Is this wordless? What a cool book to integrate into a science unit on clouds. 5y

Caldecott Award winning Science Fiction (SF) picture book “Sector 7,” illustrated by David Wiesner is very unique as the story is depicted through virtually no text.

Killianfig It is the mesmerizing illustrations themselves that show the story of a boy in a field trip to the Empire State Building when he is suddenly taken away by a cloud and transported to Sector 7: the place where the clouds in the sky are created. The book is absolutely perfect for students to mimic and create picture stories of their own. 6y
Killianfig The strict use of visual information will do great in exercising UDL strategies 1.1 and mixed-media presentation strategies 5.1, 5.2, and 3.3. ESOL strategy 17 can also be exercised using this book to support the visual means that it is presented in. 6y
Killianfig Activities that focus more on showing information visually such as Dramatic Reenactments (DR), Reader‘s Theater (RT), a Storytelling (S) would all fit perfectly into the story as the visual learning mimics the unique way the story is presented. The amazing pictures also promote activities such as Shared Reading (SR) and Independent Reading (IR). 6y

#ReadingResolutions Day 18: One of the best graphic memoirs about New York #City. I like how despite the fictional nature of the narrative, the attention to geographical detail and facts concerning this commuter‘s-nightmare-of-a-story, based on New Yorkers‘ reviews and accounts, remains true and authentic. What struck me the most, however, was the sheer density of the people captured in the artwork. Full review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-hQs

#HopIntoSpring Day 24: I took photos of these fabulous #Clouds that blanketed the Singapore skies two years back while I was in a moving vehicle. It was awe-inspiring. Tagged book is a gorgeous Wiesner title that speaks of the power of creativity and imagination that can soar to the heavens, and yes, #clouds.
