Day 12: Two #disabilityreads I loved. The hero of the first and the heroine of the second are blind but they are both amazing. As are their significant others.

vkois88 I love that you take the time to read about the disabilities. So many teachers around here have proven to be blissfully ignorant about the struggles some of their students face. It's incredibly frustrating to see. 6y

#disabilityreads These are the books I read most often after my son‘s diagnoses in the 80‘s/90‘s.
Asperger‘s Syndrome was given to me by my son‘s pediatric neurologist when Aspergers was seldom heard of. It proved to be a vital tool as my son was the 1st hands-on student in his school district. I highly recommend it for anyone wanting to learn about Autism Spectrum Disorder particularly Aspergers.

CBee Tammy - I am always seeking other parents who have children on the spectrum. My youngest is autistic (he‘s 5). Would you be open to emailing with me occasionally? 6y
tammysue @CBee Of course, I would enjoy that Cydney! 6y
Tamra I love the way Litsy makes connections! 💚 6y

tammysue @Tamra It‘s amazing here isn‘t it! 😊 6y
CBee @whatshesreadingnow great! So thankful ♥️ 6y
CBee @Tamra 100% agree!!! ♥️😁 6y
maleahrae My son has the same two diagnoses! Only now Aspergers is called ASD Level 1, so that's his official diagnosis. My younger sons teacher recently mentioned screening him for ADHD, too. @CBee 6y
booklahoma I really enjoyed the book In A Different Key. My nephew is on the spectrum and is a wonderful kid. 6y
CBee @maleahrae hi 👋🏻😁 it always helps me to connect with others who get it! If you ever want to email a bit, I‘m game! ♥️ 6y
CBee @booklahoma I added that one to my TBR. Thank you 😊 6y
vkois88 We had these as well when my brother was diagnosed 6y

kspenmoll I was lucky enough to go a a conference of Tony Atwood‘s in Boston years ago. He was fabulous. What a journey if your son was diagnosed in the 80s. My son‘s diagnosis came a decade later. While not the first( what trailblazing & I imagine immensely challenging for your family) in his elementary school he was the 1st but not in the district. 6y
tammysue @booklahoma Thanks for the recommendation, I‘ll check and see if my library has it. 💛😊 6y
tammysue @vkois88 ❤️🤗 6y
tammysue @kspenmoll I felt very fortunate to have the amazing teachers he had. We worked closely together throughout his schooling sharing ideas and especially having the support I did from them! It meant so much and I‘ll forever be grateful to them all. ❤️ 6y
booklahoma @CBee @whatshesreadingnow In case anyone is wondering, In A Different Key is fairly recent so it is "spectrum-aware." It includes stories, info, and research across many ASD variants. 6y
tammysue @booklahoma I put it on library hold today. Thanks so much! 😊 6y

I really struggled with #literaryluck #disabilityreads. I am the first to admit I am lacking in having read books with characters w/ disabilities, mainly because I haven‘t yet had a need that those characters could fill. Other people who do, deserve characters w/ disabilities w/ which they can identify. Last night I thought abt Mr Rogers, how he taught children abt the differences & similarities between abled bodies & differently abled bodies.👇🏻

mrsmarch I thought abt the way he began narrating his actions on the show to benefit blind & low-vision viewers, after ONE mother wrote to him. All it took was one child in need for him to change the way he helped ALL children. The spin-off show Daniel Tiger‘s Neighborhood has a character who uses leg braces & crutches — & it talks simply & honestly abt Chrissie‘s experiences and needs and abilities. 👇🏻 (edited) 6y
mrsmarch God bless Fred Rogers for giving all us struggling parents the simple language, and the assurance, to help teach our kids. 6y
Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Great choice ❤️❤️❤️ I loved him!! 6y

vkois88 He was such a beautiful soul, through and through. I'm so glad my daughter will watch his show 6y
mrsmarch @vkois88 I went out of my way to buy his parenting book when my first was born. Some parents swear by Dr Spock. 6y
vkois88 Oh, I haven't seen that one. But we watch it on occasion, and of course, Daniel Tiger here and there. 6y

I read this book the year before last after wanting to read it for what seems like forever. I‘m so glad I eventually picked it up because I really enjoyed reading a book from a different perspective. The main character has autism and it was interesting to see the way he processed things.

⭐⭐⭐⭐
#literaryluck #disabilityreads l choose out of my mind because like myself, the protagonist has cerebral palsy. I love Melody because she has sass! I felt the book gave an honest portrayal of what it's like to have CP. For those of you who have kids in #middlegrade, I hope you will consider having them read this book.

#disabilityreads #LiteraryLuck As an aid to recovering from his nervous breakdown the narrator of the tagged book begins keeping detailed records of everything in his life, what he eats ,what he spends on books & movies. As this task begins to overwhelm him,he withdraws from family & friends.Still on my TBR,I bought years ago at St.Marks Bookshop . Made me sad to remember poor, lost, St.Marks.😢Dalkey Archive 4 those who care.

Billypar Very sad: I just knew it from its second to last location, but really liked it. My sister just got me this book of famous bookstores, and it includes a bunch of NYC shops that I never had the pleasure to know. 6y
Leftcoastzen @Billypar I had the pleasure of shopping there a few times ,I‘m pretty sure I was at both the 2nd and 3rd locations.Know I was never at the last location.😥Their taste in titles was really in line with mine.Other store like that for me is City Lights . 6y

vivastory St. Mark's was always the first place I stopped after checking into my hotel whenever I traveled in NYC. I have great memories associated with it, including going directly to the Poetry Project to hear Diane di Prima read right after shopping there. 6y
Leftcoastzen @vivastory Wow! great story. 6y
vkois88 This one sounds intriguing! 6y
