I enjoyed it. An older woman on YT considered it one of her favorite police procedurals, so I gave it a try. This husband and wife writing team wrote a number of these types of books. #SwedishAuthors, #Budapest. I really liked the setting. This may be the first book I‘ve ever read set in Budapest (well, most of it was set there).

I‘m behind on posting yesterday. Time spent reading on 12/16 is actually 4 hours but I forgot to turn off my timer when I fell asleep. 🤦🏻‍♀️ 40 x‘s 5 = 200 points.

Also watched The Shop Around The Corner, the new Christmas episode of Bob‘s Burgers, & While You Were Sleeping. 20 points

Love her writing. This is an epic tale of one young man's journey through WWII. I think the prewar section could have been cut back. The author seemed to be in love with her research at times. Like most war novels, it is heartbreaking at times. 3 🌟

Published in 1957, this reads as an immediate view of the 1956 Hungarian revolution and flight of refugees. It‘s also completely a 1950s warning against communism. I was very much invested in the stories of these people who fought for and then fled their homeland.

🎧 I listened to the audio (a few hours while disking today) and found it bearable but not great.

Texreader Excellent book. And tough work today!! 2y
Daisey @Texreader Agree about the book, but as for the work, this was the easiest job of the day and only one with AC. Plus, I got to listen to my book. 2y

#two4Tuesday

1) I‘m with @Catsandbooks — stay inside with the AC; it‘s brutally hot out there
2) Many but most recently James Michener. When I learned he volunteered in the 1950s to help Hungarians escape the Soviets and communism, and how it inspired him to learn all he could about the situation, I was so impressed and I learned immense amounts about a country I knew so little about, #Hungary, thanks to #foodandlit

Thanks for the tag!

The past is never settled in this unsettling novel by Magda Szabo.
The murder of young Henriette in WWII has a lasting effect on all of the three families that had been peacefully living closely together in Budapest until the. Her death is symbolic for all that happens in the book during the war and the communist period afterwards. In their complicated attempts to save one another, the characters are just as likely to destroy one another. ⬇️

BarbaraBB I have now read three of her books and all are fantastic. My favorite is 2y
Ruthiella Awesome! I still need to read her. 2y
