I went into this not knowing much about it, just strictly on @LibrarianRyan 's recommendation. This was really cool! I called one thing pretty early on, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment of the story at all.

LibrarianRyan I‘m glad you enjoyed it. It was way different than I thought it would be but I still really liked it. 4y
night_shift @LibrarianRyan I didn't know what I was expecting, but it was definately exciting and I'm interested in seeing what the sequel brings - so thanks for the suggestion! 4y
LibrarianRyan The “crew” made such a big deal about the love triangle and picking a team Jamal or a team Julius I thought there would be more to that aspect of the book. To mean this was way more about her relationship to her father and sister than to any boy. So that surprised me. It also wasn‘t as “ghetto” as I thought it would be. You get a bit of that but apparently the first draft was darker and Rue actually had wings. I look forward to book 2 4y

night_shift @LibrarianRyan yeah, I'm not a huge fan of love triangles, so pretty happy it didn't focus on that! Maybe the wings will come in the 2nd book, that would be cool. That one death scene in the warehouse was pretty dark, but other than that. I'm curious now what was taken out! 4y
LibrarianRyan @UnidragonFrag nope. Wings not making an appearance. She didn‘t tell us much. But originally Julius was dealing and mixed up with the gang and it was a bit more violent and older YA rather than the MG-YA it currently is. Also the sister was an add in. Originally she didn‘t exist. 4y
night_shift @LibrarianRyan ah, ok, well dang! If Julius had, that would've been an interesting side plot. I can't imagine how it would be without the sister, she's pretty important to the plot. Huh! Sounds like it went through a lot of rewrite! 4y

Aphra + a group of interesting characters go back to her destroyed home, Innsmouth, & the nearby Miskatonic Uni. She's there to help an FBI agent who suspects a Russian spy has stolen some secret magic from the Uni. Set in 1928, there's lots of talk about race, gender, identity. Very slow book, lots of researching in dank library scenes, but it's so interesting! It puts a cool twist on Lovecraft that probably has him rolling in his grave 😂

I enjoyed this far more than I expected: apparently I was in the mood for a gothic f/f wartime romance! Thematically it explores similar ground to The Little Stranger, but it‘s a bit unfair to set a debut up against a powerhouse like Sarah Waters. Still, this is well written (altho I have qualms about the final act), atmospheric and full of longing - with a side dish of stubborning out the patriarchy. Yay! #LitsyAtoZ #Abecedarian

Instead of reading I‘ve been spending all my time cuddling and playing with Rémy. I did manage to finish my entry for the February #bookspin #doublespin ?A very difficult, frustrating and personally disturbing read with such a condescending, arrogant, narcissistic narrator that I almost bailed. This one will also be looking for a new home. #scribd #readtheusa2020 #connecticut #litsyatoz #abecedarian #A #remysiberiancat

FlowerFairy What a little sweetheart! 😻 5y
