I‘m not sure how to rate this one. I enjoyed the story & the #SUNDAYBUDDYREAD group discussions. I wish it were more historically accurate historical fiction & was disappointed with info we got in the Author‘s Note. However, @TheBookHippie once again provided amazing information & chose a book I wouldn‘t have found on my own. The knowledge I gained & the enjoyment I got from reading it with the group pushes this to a pick.

Pickpick

#Read2025

So in high school I absolutely did not like The Great Gatsby & thus over the years never picked up more Fitzgerald, content in my dislike. We had two #SundayBuddyRead books that put the author in a more favorable, sympathetic light & I decided it was time to go back again & reread TGG after a (cough) few decades of life 😉 & picked it as my #FictionalTraveler March pick for #BigCity. Surprise! I quite enjoyed the book this time. ⬇️

DebinHawaii … I suppose I‘ll attribute it to being more open-minded about morally ambiguous characters like Gatsby, understanding wanting something/someone so badly, &/or just being more appreciative of well-written prose, but it was not at all a chore to read & at the end of the day, I think it‘s a great book. (I still despise Tom & Daisy mind you). And something interesting to me now is when Tom is describing their honeymoon & Daisy loving him, he says, ⬇️ (edited) 2d
DebinHawaii … “Not at Kapiolani?” & “Not that day I carried you down from the Punch Bowl to keep your shoes dry?” So I am now convinced that Tom & Daisy‘s 3-month South Seas honeymoon trip included Oahu & Hawaii. Again, probably just interesting to me. Anyway, I am pleased with adult me for having grown & will probably try more Fitzgerald in the future! 😉 2d

LeahBergen There are so many books I appreciate more with some ‘age‘ behind me. 😆 2d

dabbe I always wondered why this book was taught in American literature. I didn't appreciate it as a 16-year-old at all. As an adult, though ... wowza! I found that playing the audio of Tim Robbins reading it to my juniors really helped them to understand it better. The power of audio didn't really exist back in 1982 when I was a junior. 🤣 1d

Mehso-so

#Read2025

This book get big bonus points for the descriptive writing about the food, fashion & especially design & decor. It also gave a good look at the fascinating history of the Greenbrier Resort & the work of designer Dorothy Draper. Why the so-so rating? The author tried too hard for a romance & HEA for Draper that just wasn‘t needed & required too many fictional liberties that took away from the rest. Also, much of pleasure I took from ⬇️

DebinHawaii … the book was due to @TheBookHippie ‘s research & discussions she leads with the #SundayBuddyRead & not attributable to the author at all. It wasn‘t bad—it was a good diversion & I‘m glad I read it, but I remain disappointed it let me down at the end & with the author‘s note about her liberties & what she left out about Draper. I wanted more history than this historical fiction delivered. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2d
