Just started last night. Hasn‘t grabbed me yet. I was hoping for lighthearted but so far it is not that.

“In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin.” My favorite Towles book

I can see why this is so many people's favourite - it's become one of mine too!

This is IRL bk grp choice + I'm not sure I wd have read this otherwise so really pleased as it was a joy to immerse myself in Count Rostov's forced occupation of the Moscow metropole Hotel from 1922 to 1954. The story is gentle and the bk long but I was never bored as he meets so many different characters. I just wished I'd known what happened to nina. Perfect for;

I finished listening to this cozy mystery on my walk today. It had enough twists to keep me guessing about the culprit to the end. I liked Cleo Fox and the other characters so this is a series I'll be continuing. 1st book done for #AwesomeAugust @Andrew65
Was hoping for a delightful read about the French countryside, but I did not enjoy the emphasis on objectifying women, excessive consumption of alcohol and the celebration of men‘s focus on money and what it can buy. One character was a bright light, the charming and creative, Ernest who was the majordoma for Simon, the ad executive. Finally, the bank heist at the end turned out to be a breath of fresh air! #booked2022 #SETINAHOTEL #192025 #1973
This was between a pick and a so-so… the characters are a bit stereotypical, but I ultimately enjoyed the story and it‘s not badly written. Historical fiction based around a real-life murder in the Adirondacks in 1906, it‘s really more of a YA coming-of-age about a smart girl from a poor family.
This was my #SetInAHotel book for #Booked2022 and had been on my shelf waaaaay too long.
⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
Hmm, there were a lot of things I didn‘t like about this book, aboutMolly (the maid) who finds a dead body when cleaning. The first-half portrayal of Molly felt really uncomfortable. I believe the author meant for her to be neuro-divergent but this isn‘t specifically referenced and her treatment by other characters was just nasty, certainly not the ‘ditsy‘ character and cosy mystery that I think the author was aiming for. ⬇️
Fascinating look at this hotel for women. Great detail and set against the changing role of women generally in US society. Lots of famous women discussed, including Plath, Didion and Grace Kelly.
Thanks Helen 😘
