Pickpick

This was a thought-provoking book. Filipino-Australian Karuna lives in a council flat with her overbearing, emotionally (& occ. physically) abusive mother. The situation escalates when Karuna becomes pregnant and gives birth. I get the feeling we're supposed to feel like the mother is at least sometimes trying her best, but what I came away with is that the fallout from trauma tied up with 'tradition' is horrifying, and echoes down generations.

Lauredhel I also came away with hope, and joy in Karuna's resilience and her determination to do her best by her child despite their circumstances, and her hesitant gathering of allies. Perhaps trauma doesn't have to keep echoing down generations. 2y
