One Hundred Days
One Hundred Days | Alice Pung
5 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
One hundred days. It's no time at all, she tells me. But she's not the one waiting. In a heady whirlwind of independence, lust and defiance, sixteen-year-old Karuna falls pregnant. Not on purpose, but not entirely by accident, either. Incensed, Karuna's mother, already over-protective, confines her to their fourteenth-storey housing-commission flat, to keep her safe from the outside world - and make sure she can't get into any more trouble. Stuck inside for endless hours, Karuna battles her mother and herself for a sense of power in her own life, as a new life forms and grows within her. As the due date draws ever closer, the question of who will get to raise the baby - who it will call Mum - festers between them. One Hundred Days is a fractured fairytale exploring the fault lines between love and control. At times tense and claustrophobic, it is nevertheless brimming with humour, warmth and character. It is a magnificent new work from one of Australia's most celebrated writers.

Believe it or not, we have officially hit DAY 100 of 2023! I can‘t believe how fast this year has been flying by, but I thought I should take this as a chance to check in with my annual goals, and decide if i should reevaluate or adjust any of my reading plans.

How are you guys doing? Are you hitting your goals? Reading fantastic books? Choosing new genres? 🖤🎉 #Day100

MicrobeMom Yay! I am doing great! 12 books ahead of my reading goal. This has never happened before. 2y
Clwojick @MicrobeMom Well done! 🎉🎉🎉 2y

AllDebooks I'm ahead on reading goals despite a real slump over the last 6 weeks. I have an annual theme every year. This year is poetry and I need to get more of those selections read, as I have a pretty eclectic mix 2y
MonicaLoves2Read I'm on track with mine. 41 books so far, so happy with that! Goal is 100. 2y
Clwojick @Monica5 woohoo! You‘ll definitely hit that if you keep this speed! 2y
Clwojick @AllDebooks good idea. I definitely don‘t read enough poetry, but maybe I‘ll add a goal for next year. 2y
Clwojick @Birdsong28 Woohoo! 🔥⭐️👏🏻 2y
marleed My biggest goal was to steal a couple days at the end of each month to read down a chunkster to a reasonable page count for the next month. My issue was being :so focused on book count that my over 500 page TBR had reached its angle of repose and books were tumbling down like the last rock atop a quarry. It‘s working, I‘ve finished one chunkster each Jan-Apr! 2y
Clwojick That‘s a good idea! I‘m glad it‘s working for you! I have a couple LONG audiobooks on my upcoming TBR. Maybe I should try this between April/May. @marleed 2y
BBooks I'm 80% to my goal for the year. 📚 if I count rereads I'd be at my goal of 30, hope to get to 50 but did slump a little thus the rereads. It's a good reading year so far 😃 1y
Clwojick @BBooks Great job! I definitely count rereads! 1y

Pickpick

This was a thought-provoking book. Filipino-Australian Karuna lives in a council flat with her overbearing, emotionally (& occ. physically) abusive mother. The situation escalates when Karuna becomes pregnant and gives birth. I get the feeling we're supposed to feel like the mother is at least sometimes trying her best, but what I came away with is that the fallout from trauma tied up with 'tradition' is horrifying, and echoes down generations.

Lauredhel I also came away with hope, and joy in Karuna's resilience and her determination to do her best by her child despite their circumstances, and her hesitant gathering of allies. Perhaps trauma doesn't have to keep echoing down generations. 2y
