An excellent personal narrative, interwoven with a lot of info about policies and structures, both Canadian and global, and how they have impacted Indigenous people in Canada. Manuel starts in the 60s, sometimes with some flashbacks, using his own story as an activist to explain complex colonial policies and structures and creative acts of resistance.Lots that I knew snippets about hang together more clearly now.

I listened to this short but powerful poetry collection last night before going to bed. #Freebie #AudiblePlus 🎧 Joy Harjo is the first Native American to be honored with title US Poet Laureate. Here she invokes the hardships, violence and displacement that has marked hundreds of years of Native American history, sharing her own families plight as they were forced to walk the Trail of Tears. She also blends current US policy to the narrative 👇🏼

TrishB Oh I have these ready to read 👍🏻 looking forward to it. 4y
Cinfhen I think you‘re gonna like this @TrishB Im not much of a poetry reader but it was easily accessible 4y

Cinfhen It put me to sleep last night @Megabooks except the author randomly sings Native American chants and it kept startling me ( not in a good way, either 😜😘) 4y

There There: A novel | Tommy Orange

A superb debut novel, in my opinion. Orange encapsulates modern Natives in ways that are salient, and in some that others may criticize as stereotypical. The style and narratives are unique, and he incorporates devices that are simple to read, but often complex to connect and navigate as his characters converge for the climax. Must read for anyone with an interest in Native American literature. #nativelit #nativeauthor #nativeamerican #indigenous
