Third in the Bread Shop cozy mystery series, and it‘s just as good as the first two. Ivy has to help a family member, who is the prime suspect in the murder of a town celebrity. But, as she looks for clues to the killer, she discovers conspiracy and secrets. Fun cozy, and this one included baklava recipes! I listened on audio; the narrator does well with voices. My #Audio spot for #mandmchallenge2020 #memoirsmysteries

This book scared me as it deals with child abduction-any parent‘s worst nightmare. A father and son find themselves in the midst of a police investigation of a serial killer. It‘s suspenseful, has a supernatural element, and the main characters are well drawn. I particularly like the father-son relationship which added so much depth to the story, otherwise it would be just another run-of-the-mill thriller. TW:child murders but not graphic. 👇

maich I'm reading it... 5y

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind | William Kamkwamba, Bryan Mealer

Pickpick

This memoir was about so much more than just a disadvantaged Malawian boy creating a windmill for electricity. At its core is a tale of ingenuity in the face of adversity, coupled with the power of friends, family, and strangers who believe in you and your potential. 4⭐️s! Other topics tackled included: scarcity, famine, effects of hunger on the brain, predatory price-gouging during famine, school fees and the cycle of poverty,👇🏽

KT1432 “Magic” and superstition used as a scapegoat for HIV/AIDS and famine, deforestation aiding in flooding and drought, farm livelihood dependent upon weather and fertilizer, and government corruption. It packed in a LOT and I admit some of the technical parts went over my head. But overall, an inspirational story I‘m glad to have read! Thanks @RachelO! (edited) 5y

alisiakae I really like this book too. And, wow! #PromptQueen 👏 5y
rockpools Your prompts!! Brilliant! 🤣😂🤣 So glad you enjoyed it - he really did pack a lot in there. It shouldn‘t have, but the school fees thing really shocked me - it had just never occurred to me that the family would need to pay for his education in those circumstances. 5y
KT1432 @RachelO yes! I know here in the States we really take free primary/secondary education for granted. The school fees situation creating this cycle of poverty despite his obvious talent and ability to learn was heartbreaking. But it had a happy ending! 😊 5y

Against a backdrop of tension, turmoil and aggression in Franco‘s civil war in Spain, Maisie Dobbs attempts to find some calm after losing her husband and child in Canada. Unable and/or unwilling to return to England immediately after the double tragedy, Maisie spends a year or two in India in order to grieve in privacy before returning home. Once she takes to decision to go home, though, great unease and trepidation cause her to debark in 👇🏻

gradcat ☝️Gibraltar rather than travel on to England. Once there, the psychologist/investigator stumbles (quite literally) onto a dead body, and a mystery to be solved. As Maisie battles a kind of emotional malaise and fatigue borne of grief to find a killer, she finds herself becoming stronger in mind and body. This is the 11th in a series that began post-WWI & now is inevitably approaching the breakout of WWII. Great book; great series. 👇🏻 5y
Louise Such a good series! I remember this one being particularly sad. I was even angry with the author for doing this to Maisie! ☺️ 5y

Andrew65 This is the next one up for me in he series. Took a break in the series after she left the U.K. It is a favourite series and time to get back to it. Thanks for this great review. (edited) 5y
Andrew65 Thanks for the tag 😍 5y
BarbaraTheBibliophage Great pick for these prompts. I need to get back to this series! 📚♥️👊🏻 5y
gradcat @Louise @4thhouseontheleft @Andrew65 @BarbaraTheBibliophage They really are good reads. Winspear‘s novels are well written as well as well researched, but I, too, stopped reading them for a bit. I‘m really glad I got back to them—learned a lot about Gibraltar—but this one is really sad. Thanks for stopping by, @EadieB & @Cinfhen to drop off such kind words! ♥️♥️♥️ 5y
Crazeedi I loved the first several mMaise Dobbs books, but the last couple not so much 5y
gradcat @Crazeedi I liked this one a LOT! But it‘s terribly sad... 5y

Reading this! It's kind of a sneak into the lives of many celebrities, what they are grateful for & some neat stories.
#litsyatoz #abecedarianTBR #RTA2020 #alphabetsoupchallenge #mandmchallenge #memoirsmysteries - I'm not sure if it can be counted as a memoir towards the challenge. It's a non fiction, with real stories from celebrities/ childhood/experiences & great advice. @BarbaraTheBibliophage @BookishMarginalia Does it count? Or 👎

BarbaraTheBibliophage I‘d count it—sounds like a group of mini-memoirs! ♥️📚👊🏻 5y
JudeCC @BarbaraTheBibliophage 🙌 Yay! It's really good! Thanks for getting back to me! Have a great night!! 🌛😃 5y

I just finished this beautiful book!
I think all children should read/listen to it. Even adults! It teaches in a simple way, with beautiful images & a magical story, how we should LOVE & ACCEPT one another. We ARE ALL beautiful: all skin tones/cultures/race/beliefs/age/body type/healthy/handicapped/wealthy or not... The world is aching/TOGETHER we can heal it!

“You can‘t rely on what you look like to make you feel beautiful; real beauty comes from your mind and your heart. It begins with how you see yourself and not how others see you.”
-Such a beautiful & important message!

I‘m glad to have finally read this after it has been languishing on my shelf for a few years. PI Jackson Brodie investigates 3 decades-old seemingly unrelated family tragedies and begins to find connection among them. Great character studies and engaging mystery, with bits of humour. Love it, just brilliant. 👍
Look forward to discussion #belowzer00s , happy to begin a #newseries #memoirsmysteries #mandmchallenge2020 also #detective #jennyis30

BarbaraBB Yay! I am looking forward to #BelowZer00s too. Must really start the book now but I‘m glad with your review, it‘s encouraging 💕 5y
Cathythoughts Yes!! Soooo good ❤️👍🏻 5y
batsy I'm stuck in some twilight zone where I can only manage a few pages of reading a day 😭 but I can't wait to make a dent in this one! The early pages are promising. 5y

Repost for @BarbaraTheBibliophage :

2 genres I want to read more of this year are memoirs & mysteries. When I started to make myself a pretty bingo card, I thought “let‘s make a challenge!” If you want to add another challenge, please come join me. The prompts are deliberately short & broad, so you can interpret as you prefer. Only rule is read from the genres.
