I really loved this book. I loved the intersectional feminism, and I‘m always a sucker for a book ghat pulls in progressive politics. Not my first book that incorporates the gentrification of Brooklyn (Pride by Ibi Zoboi!) but this felt like a true testimony. It pulls from current events and activism, and the sacrifices/choices that are sometimes made. Definitely recommend!

Sophronisba I loved this one, too. 2y
alisiakae @Sophronisba except for the mother. Couldn't stand her, and kind of wanted to reach through the book and slap her. 2y

I think I've chosen the books I'm going to take with me to Italy 💚🤍🧡

Pickles has just slobbered all over Call me by your name 😠 but I think these are suitable reads!

If you can think of prompts that Evelyn Hugo & Call me by your name fit, even better! 😊

jenniferw88 I've put Evelyn Hugo down for #latinxauthor 3y
squirrelbrain Can‘t think of anything for those two…. 🤔 3y
The_Penniless_Author Nice! I've got to narrow down my Spain book list to a single choice, but I think I've done it. 3y

Branwen Those are GREAT choices! 😍 3y
Soubhiville I really loved Evelyn Hugo! 3y
Soubhiville When is your trip? I think Italy will be our main destination for our vacation next summer. 😊 3y
BarbaraBB Good holiday reads I think. Where will you be going in Italy? 3y
Cortg Oooh, have fun! Looks like great book choices! 3y
RaeLovesToRead @jenniferw88 Thanks for the suggestion! 😊 3y
RaeLovesToRead @squirrelbrain I'm way behind on my #pop22 challenge because I keep getting distracted by other books 😅 3y
RaeLovesToRead @The_Penniless_Author What are you taking?? 3y
RaeLovesToRead @Branwen Thanks! I'm looking forward to them! 😊 3y
RaeLovesToRead @Soubhiville I've heard great things about Evelyn Hugo! @Soubhiville @BarbaraBB I'm going on Tuesday to Milan & Como 😁 I've been to Italy a couple of times, but not these places yet! Have a couple of friends who live in Como so will be nice to see them! 3y
RaeLovesToRead @Cortg Thanks! It'll be good to have something to read on the plane! 3y
The_Penniless_Author @RaeLovesToRead True Grit. I liked the movie, and I loved the one Charles Portis novel I've read (Masters of Atlantis), so it seemed like a safe choice. I'll only be reading in the plane, so one book should be good enough 3y
RaeLovesToRead @The_Penniless_Author Oh nice! I haven't read many Westerns - just The Son (which was good) and The Sisters' Brothers (which was amazing because it made me feel like I was in Red Dead Redemption again!) I've also been recommended Lonesome Dove... 🤔 I probably won't need more than one book, but the others are emergency books... you know... just in case!! 🤣 3y
Cinfhen Have fun!!!! Enjoy 🫶🏼 3y
RaeLovesToRead @Cinfhen Thanks!!! 😁😁 3y

I enjoyed this, just not quite as much as Mexican Gothic. I think I was hoping for more out of the setting, it wasn't as immersive as I envisioned from the blurb on the back and I didn't really buy the romance. Overall still a unique tale in a world I would have liked to dive a little deeper into. #pop22 #popsugar #latinxauthor

A sunny day, a napping dog, a good book = perfection!

Like @KarenUK I loved Olga as a character. Refreshing and real, she made decisions I could definitely relate to. She‘s driven and doesn‘t let anyone close because her mother abandoned her. When her mother pops up fighting for an independent Puerto Rico after Maria, her and her Congressman brother‘s lives are thrown into turmoil. I loved her big extended family and the man she meets, Matteo.

AmyG What a sweet, content dog. 3y

I wasn‘t expecting to like this book as much as I did. It follows a year ( each chapter covers one month) of the Alvarado family. Oscar, the patriarch is a born & bred Angeleno of Mexican descent, who comes from a line of prosperous ranchers/farmers. Oscar understands & respects the importance of weather & all of its implications. His wife & 3 daughters take most things for granted, as each has achieved levels of success. 👇🏼

Cinfhen The book opens with a life changing event, which then escalates. A lot occurs in this one year, but sometimes life throws shit at you. Umm, hello 2020!! #Booked2022 #AboutSisters #Pop22 #LatinxAuthor @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft @Megabooks @BarbaraBB @KarenUK @Cortg @Laughterhp @RaeLovesToRead @jenniferw88 @Kalalalatja 3y

BarbaraBB Oh 2020. 😊 3y
Megabooks Glad you liked it more than I did. 👍🏻👍🏻💜 3y
Cinfhen Yeah, this book is set in 2016 with the arrival of a Trump Presidency @BarbaraBB @TrishB and it kind of ends on a cliffhanger so I‘m curious if the author will write a sequel. I‘d be totally open to that but not sure if @Megabooks would 😁 3y
BarbaraBB I think I‘ll like it. #stacked 3y
Cinfhen I do think you‘d like it @BarbaraBB it‘s not OUTSTANDING but definitely compelling. It would make for a great TV series. (edited) 3y

I‘ve seen lots of mixed reviews but so far I‘m intrigued. I like that the mom is of Mexican Jewish decent. I have several friends here in Israel who are originally from Mexico, their relatives fled from Eastern Europe before & during WWII and settled in Mexico. #Pop22 #LatinxAuthor #Booked2022 #AboutSisters

Megabooks I wondered what you‘d think of this when I read it, but I didn‘t like it enough to recommend. 3y
Cinfhen I remember it was a meh for you @Megabooks but I‘m liking it 💓💓💓 3y
marleed I really enjoyed this. I thought it was an interesting family drama. 3y
Cinfhen I‘m surprised this book got such mixed reviews @marleed I‘m LOVING it. It‘s just what Im in the mood for 3y

This was an interesting little novel based on true events that occurred in Mexico in the 1950's & '60's. Sisters Arcangela and Serafina are successful brothel owners until the law starts to threaten their livelihood. The book reads a bit more like a news expose or articles than a fully narrative story, but that is what makes this unique and interesting. It's not exactly true crime, but similar and dark and I may research further.

This is one of the best books I read all year! It's the story of a teen mom learning to navigate school, family, friends, new love, and dreams of the future. #Booked2021 #LatinxAuthor @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @4thhouseontheleft
