It radicalized me.Plight of the immigrant working class , unsanitary conditions , unbearable hours , unsanitary food. Teddy Roosevelt enacted food safety laws because of this book. A book can make a difference in so many ways. Skeptic for life ,that‘s me.Thanks ,Upton Sinclair, muckraker extraordinaire.

I enjoyed several books that I studied in high school, but one of the first ones that I can recall that really stuck with me was The Dark is Rising. Other favourites were The Glass Menagerie and these text books of short stories and poetry. I liked them so much that I searched used bookstores for years to find them. #FavoriteSchoolRead #Riotgrams

#riotgrams Day 19 - #FavoriteSchoolRead

This was assigned during the same creative writing class that assigned Actual Air. It was by far my favorite from the class and one I‘ve read again, even after college. I don‘t keep many books once I‘ve finished reading them but this is one that will stick with me through any future moves or purges.

My third grade teacher read this to our class, but summer arrived before she could finish. My book-loving grandma helped me order a copy from her bookstore... it arrived towards the end of the summer... so worth the wait! ❤️ #favoriteschoolread #riotgrams

I wanted to dig out something a little different for a #favoriteschoolread so here's one from my grad school days. I've always enjoyed a good satire, and this is a classic two in one combo poking fun at Richardson's Pamela, a book that annoyed me to no end!

Wish I had my original well worn paperback edition but it is at school, because we read this novel every year. ❤️

I hated every assigned read in school purely because I'm stubborn and hate being told what to read. So for #riotgrams day 19, my #favoriteschoolread is a book I got to select myself. I wrote a personal narrative paper as a high school junior using this book for my English class. It was already one of my favorites, and it remains one to this day.

We had to read about ten books in English at high school. Everyone was searching for the shortest reads (Of Mice and Men, Animal Farm etc.). I tried this one because I knew it was a favourite of my teacher. It became one of mine as well. And it started my love for English and American literature.
