Les Miserables a New Unabridged Translation | Victor Hugo

I struggled to come up with anything for #GratefulReads yesterday, but today this came to mind. In the book, and musical, Javert is a complex character that I couldn‘t dislike, but Crowe‘s dreadful performance made him a #CharacterYouLoveToHate. Meanwhile, in the book, the Thenadiers are pure evil, but in the musical they are offered up as light relief, #CharactersYouHateToLove

DGRachel I completely agree about the Thenardiers! They are completely loathesome in the book, but bawdy, comic relief in the musical. 5y

GidgetsTreasures75 @rubyslippersreads I just read that the director of The Wizard of Oz edited out a lot of Ms. Hamilton‘s scenes because he felt they were too scary for children to see on the big screen! Can you imagine what he must of left out? That witch scared me for years!!! 5y

Every time I read the opening line of King's Dark Tower series I shiver, because it's just so good! A character I love to hate is the man in black, Randall Flagg. He's just so evil, intelligent, and powerful...he gives me the creeps! I'm excited to hate him all over again now that I'm rereading The Stand! ?

vivastory What were your thoughts on Wizard and Glass? I know it's the most divisive book in the series, but I really enjoyed learning more about Roland's past. I felt like it also offered a better sense of Mid-World. 5y

Branwen @vivastory I actually LOVED Wizard and Glass! I also really liked learning about Roland's past and learning some of why he is the way he is. It was very enlightening and I think important to tje rest of the series. I didn't realize it was so divisive! Do many people not like it? 5y

vivastory The feeling I got looking online after finishing it was that about half of the people disliked it, because they felt like it was an unnecessary detour from the main story. But I'm with you, I loved it. 5y

Branwen @vivastory Yes! I also liked that the pace was a bit slower than the previous books, you know? It felt easier to absorb all that cool history! 5y

vivastory Great point! I really appreciated the pacing, it felt more fully realized than the first 3. I couldn't help but read a bit into possible criticism of book 4 when at the beginning of book 5 Roland asked if they all liked reading their stories categorized one way & then he mentioned stew. I thought that was a brilliant metaphor for not only DT series, but King as a writer. How he's able to blend different styles together. 5y

I won‘t go so far as to say I ‘hate‘ but the protagonist, Dr Marc Schlosser, is truly a disgusting and detestable character. If you‘ve read the book, you‘ll know what I mean. If you haven‘t, read it and perhaps you‘ll grow to hate him.
