This makes me so happy! Go NZ. What a great idea. When I was little we had the summer Pizza Hut reading program that let you earn free pizza. I read more books those summers than any other. ❤️🍕

LiterRohde I‘m so pessimistic. My first thought was that it‘s still a good idea but that here in America it would get kids to eat less fast food. I know. I‘m horrible. 6y

LiterRohde I‘m just a frustrated 9th grade reading teacher. Maybe part of the key would be to get them early when they still eat Happy Meals. 6y

SleepyDragon They still have a reading program at Pizza Hut during the school year if the teacher signs the class up. Jack in the Box *used to* have puzzles and mini National Geographic Kids books in their kids meals occasionally, but then they stopped putting any treat in with their kids meals, so we stopped buying them. 6y

WhatThePuck It's what we get after doctors appointments too. The hubs just started eating McD's again after a 12 year hiatus. He watched super size me and lost his appetite. So it used to be a treat for me and the kids since we only got it when he wasn't around. It's still what we want when we don't feel good either. I've had a head cold all week and I've eaten breakfast there every day this week. 😂 6y

WhatThePuck @Whimsical.Curiosity milk shakes were a big thing for when we were sick. Emmalea and I have strep a lot. Now poor Jacob can't have milk shakes so I have to run by Speedway too for a slushy. 😂😂 6y

anneofgreentables Yeah! I‘d totally forgotten about that. Our local library also offered ice cream cones at a local diner as part of their summer reading program, although I probably would have read all the books anyway. 6y

I recently rediscovered one of my old Book It! pins, and I thought my fellow Littens would enjoy the nostalgia (the fifth sticker must have fallen off because I was always obsessed with earning them all). I have vivid memories of standing in Pizza Hut, waiting for that box to slide across the counter. I really wish they'd extend this program to adults - although with this crowd, they'd go broke pretty quickly! #bookit #bookitprogram #bookitpin

ErikaB @jfalkens I'd actually rather get a free book than a free pizza. I think I just miss that feeling of accomplishment: "Here's a prize for something you were going to do anyway!". 7y

jfalkens @ErikaB I'd rather have the free books than pizza any day! I miss the excuse to read as much as possible all summer, getting free books at the start and end and the fun activities during it plus the start and end parties 😀📚 7y

ErikaB @jfalkens I'd always try to finish tests and in-class assignments as quickly as possible so I could spend the rest of the time reading. I also miss SSR - all you were allowed to do was read! Adults need that, too. 7y

jfalkens @ErikaB I did that too! I loved that class too but ours was Reading Renaissance, we had it from 6th-8th grade only. 7y

ErikaB @jfalkens What really drives me crazy is when I remember pieces of short stories we read, either in textbooks or as part of extra reading units. I rarely have enough information to find them now. The only one I remember for sure was "The Veldt" by Ray Bradbury, which is still one of my favorites. 7y

jfalkens @ErikaB I hate when I can remember bits of the plot and the cover but that's it! It drives me crazy 🤣 I haven't read any by Ray Bradbury yet, I just got ferhnhite 451 for Christmas. Our English teacher was to obsessed with Shakespeare to teach us much else unfortunately 😕 7y

ErikaB @jfalkens I really enjoy Bradbury's short stories. Several were adapted for the anthology TV series "The Ray Bradbury Theater" and had some pretty well-known guest stars, including Drew Barrymore and Jeff Goldblum. They can tend towards a bit of late-80s cheesiness, but they're still fun! 7y

Handmaid's Tale | Margaret Atwood

Finished last night.. not the kind of book I normally read but I liked it. I had no idea what I was getting into but I need to reread the Old testament and look at the treatment of slave woman in a new light. Becca95 The TV show is amazing 😍 I have got the book in my TBR pile so can't compare it for you unfortunately, but the TV is so good as it's own piece, obviously they've had to modernise it here and there but it's still worth a watch 👍🏼✨ 7y
