This was the second of my #BlackPublishingPower purchases, and while it‘s not the type of book I usually read, I have to say that I loved it! I cared about Emoni. I was rooting for her and wanted to see her succeed. The writing was at times lyrical and the flow kept me swept up in the pages. Will definitely be reading more from this author!

SamanthaMarie I really liked this too! My husband got it for me for my birthday in December and it was a great winter read. Especially when they went on that trip. Take me away from the cold 😍 haha! 4y

Yes, it‘s an essential (and demanding and hard) read, but it‘s also a great reference book to have on hand, with a thorough and notably user-friendly index. I know I‘ll be consulting it a lot!

Here‘s my June/second quarter spending log. I planned to go purchaseless last month, but #BlackPublishingPower was important and I wanted to participate.

To be honest, I mostly managed to keep to my get-book-read-book goal because the April Book Market was cancelled and all the thrift stores were closed, but still. I resisted many a discounted ebook and kept my purchases to stuff I knew I could read immediately. Gold star to me!

xicanti @RachelO it‘s definitely tough when I buy a couple of things at once, or when I get a biiiiig book that I don‘t feel prepared to start yet. Mostly, though, it‘s been a good reminder not to buy lots of random stuff! (My random library borrowing is another matter...) 4y

This was 1 of the 2 books I bought for the #BlackPublishingPower movement, and while this one has mixed reviews, I loved it. It was fast-paced, tense, and exciting. Co-written by both a black and a white author, this YA book provides unique insight into racial tension while also being a suspenseful thriller. I did wish that the characters had a little more depth, and the ending felt a little sudden, but the story kept me breathless, so I‘m happy.

White Trash: The 400-Year Untold History of Class in America | Nancy Isenberg

Today I have a #BLM adjacent read, it is not by a black author so will not count for #BlackPublishingPower, it isn‘t even specifically about racism. It is about classism in the US, which has led to an ongoing us vs them for centuries. Those in power have benefited by creating strife between the poor white classes and recently freed slaves, & that infighting has continually enriched the top 1%. Many of the historical tactics to keep those ⤵️

Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...group from coalescing into a majority that could create real change. And sadly I can still see the same arguments used today in our current race discussions and Trump talking points. “I‘m poor too, why should XYZ get special accommodations”, never realizing that if they combined forces all could argue for better conditions. This is a history of divide and conquer. 4y

Hestapleton I ordered this one for similar reasons! I tend to get a lot of “there are poor white people too” rebuttals from family and I‘m hoping this can help me get a better bearing on how to respond to that. 4y
