Odes armniennes: Edition bilingue | Serge Venturini, Sayat-Nova

It wasn't easy, but I've finally got my hands on a collection of poetry by Sayat-Nova, the famous 18th-century Armenian poet. It contains only his work in #Armenian - no idea how to get his poems/songs originally in Georgian and Azeri.

Photo is a still from Sayat-Nova, The Colour of Pomegranates, by Sergei Parajanov, to whom the translator dedicated the book. Well worth a watch for people who like art-house cinema.

Turkish-French activist Pınar Selek was in the news recently because her court hearing in a sham trial has been postponed again. She is an advocate for the rights of ethnic (#Kurdish & #Armenian), gender and sexual minorities in #Turkey. She was tortured by Turkish police in 1998 and has been living in France since 2011. It was time I read some of her books, and thankfully, the library has a couple 😁

My Name Is Aram | William Saroyan
post image

I taught a summer reading class a few years ago and there was a short story in my curriculum that I loved but I couldn't remember the title. I finally found the collection it came from! It's called "Pomegranate Trees" in My Name Is Aram by William Saroyan. The collection is tender and funny as the author reflects upon stories from his boyhood. 10/10 would recommend. ?

Gay YA with multiple references to my music obsession, Rufus Wainwright...was so excited. But with tired tropes like the evil fat boss and the stuck up teacher with an English accent, dialog as scintillating as "show'em who's who!"... it feels dated and like an impersonation of a YA book. The potential for a great story is there, but this isn't it.
