Little dude was two months yesterday! And doesn't he look so happy about being put into a greasy pizza box again for another photo shoot? ?
I read this many nights at bedtime and nursing stints throughout the nights and it kept me thoroughly engaged. Based on a true case from the late 1800s where a ghost "gave testimony" at her killer's trial, McCrumb does an amazing job at bringing all these various characters into real life??

Andrea4 She clearly did a ton of research to paint the most accurate portrait of everyone and then of course took her fictional liberties to make you wonder about the veracity of the story. Not fast paced, not a typical ghost story, not even a typical murder mystery- this feels beautifully unique and just as intriguing. 1y

I‘m so glad to have discovered Silas House this year. The way he writes about families and grief just sucks me in to his stories. Perfect for summer reading- I‘ll be searching around for more of his books soon. #BacklistReadathon

Told through alternating voices of the characters throughout, this is a story about found family in Appalachia. This story weaves through so many heavy topics of environmentalism, hate toward the poor and gay folks, racism, and child welfare. It‘s not a breeze through type book, it‘s slow and heavy, but it is compelling and the characters feel so real.

Made lemon sponge pie from this book today. Had some issues with the crust but it still smells divine.

I like the #adventrecommends idea. Day 1- This is the first Silas House book I read. It has two other books that connect with it-A Parchment of Leaves and Clay‘s Quilt. I heard him speak at our local women‘s march & decided it was time to read his books. Silas is a Kentucky writer; he teaches & is very involved in the Ky community. @emilyrose_x #wintergames #thefilthyanimals @Clwojick @StayCurious

mrsmarch I am unfamiliar with these because my Appalachian heritage was swamped by Yankee upbringing, but I am trying to uncover more. I might have to scare some up for my Christmas wish list. 5y
LauraBeth @cathipink I haven‘t but I did buy a volume yesterday! 5y
LauraBeth @Crazeedi did you grow up in southern Appalachia? 5y
LauraBeth @Blaire I bought an edition after leading through it! It looks interesting 😀 5y
LauraBeth @mrsmarch 😂😂 I feel like I grew up knowing about Foxfire but I never paid much attention to it! I think you‘ll enjoy it! 5y
Crazeedi @LauraBeth no, but on the edge of northern Appalachia, and I had several of the foxfire books when I was younger, not sure if I still do or got rid of them in my many moves 5y
Suet624 Oh! I had some of those when I lived on the commune. 5y
LauraBeth @Suet624 I‘m just over here anxiously waiting for your biography! 5y
Suet624 @LauraBeth I just started chuckling thinking of some of the commune events. I‘m hoping to leave crib notes for the kids in case they want to know what I was up to. For some reason they don‘t really ask very many questions. 5y

@Mdargusch passed this one on to me after she read it a few years ago. I absolutely loved it—a fictionalized account of a murder wherein the dead bride supposedly comes to her mother after death and tells her that she was murdered by her new husband?! Yes please! This really happened (the circumstances—not the actual haunting. Unless it really did. 😆 #skeptic) Google Greenbrier Ghost. #soaringscores #didimakethemostoflovingyou

Hollie Yes! I talk about this in class and the students are always like wtf when I tell them they allowed testimony from the murder victims ghost into the courtroom 😂 5y
Reviewsbylola I‘m using this one for #personofcolorMCparanormal. Half of the book is told from the perspective of one of the attorneys that defended the ghost‘s husband, and the attorney was a POC. @cinfhen @4thhouseontheleft @BarbaraTheBibliophage 5y
emtobiasz They told this story on an episode I just watched of the show Drunk History! 📺 5y
