Things I asked myself while listening:

1. Is this a fever dream or really happening to this guy?

2. He‘s gonna refuse food or help from someone and then consider eating THAT?

3. Why does this guy remind me of my ex? 😅

4. What sort of mental illness is he dealing with?

5. Why do I not feel for this man?

6. Ok seriously, did my ex read this and model himself after the narrator?

7. It just ends like that?

So. This is a thing I read.

⭐️⭐️1/2

sprainedbrain Also, this was my Norway book for #ReadingEurope2020 and it‘s a #1001book. So there was reason I endured. 😂 @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle (edited) 5y

Nothing to do with the planet or #Saturn5, but this tale of a walk around East Anglia came to mind for today‘s #RedRoseSeptember prompt.

@arlenefinnigan @Cinfhen

Cinfhen I bet this is a #1001Book @BarbaraBB ??!?! Um, I think I liked about 5 so far🤪 (edited) 5y

Another audiobook with a drop dead sexy narrator.😂

Trying to stay focused on the story (which is fascinating so far) while Mr. Hiddleston is somehow distracting me by reading in that incredible voice. 😛

Bonus: it‘s a #1001book 🙌🏻

CBee Ohhhhh I LOVE Tom Hiddleston 😍😍😍 6y
vivastory Hiddleston is in the film version, which is fantastic. I loved it. 6y
sprainedbrain @vivastory I‘ve had it DVRed since it was on tv forever ago... I will finally be able to watch after I finish. 😂 6y

Pickpick

I have no idea why I have put this particular #1001book off for so long. A fast-paced adventure, dripping with cliches and humor, that was just a fun way to spend an afternoon. I decided to do audio because JIM DALE, and this recording is very cool with added music and sound effects to compliment a master of narration.

However. Wtf is this hot air balloon doing on the cover? 🤔

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Sharpeipup I will listen to Jim Dale read anything! 6y
BarbaraBB That balloon 😂 6y
Butterfinger It has really been a long time since I've read it. Now, I'm wondering about the balloon. 6y

Clare-Dragonfly Aren‘t they in a hot-air balloon for a bit? 6y
sprainedbrain @Clare-Dragonfly Not at all in this book... Phileas thought about it briefly once when they missed a boat, but dismissed the idea. I kept waiting for balloon travel, but nope. 😂 6y
Clare-Dragonfly Weird! I‘m sure the abridged illustrated version I read a million times as a kid had a hot-air balloon section. At least an illustration. I obviously need to read the real thing! 6y
sprainedbrain @Clare-Dragonfly I‘ve done some googling, and I guess some movie versions had balloon travel, as well as a cartoon version. Plus, Verne had another story with balloon travel... I‘m still so confused about this cover. 😅 6y
ValerieAndBooks I didn‘t realize this was a #1001Books — I have a paperback copy that my aunt and uncle gave me many years ago and I‘ve never read it! And yes there‘s a hot air balloon on my cover copy 😂 6y
sprainedbrain @ValerieAndBooks After you read it, please let me know where I missed the dang balloon. 😂 6y

Ulysses | James Joyce

I‘m trying... but I really don‘t think I can read this book right now. I‘ve tried print and gave up, and audio doesn‘t seem to be helping.

Anyone have any suggestions for a ‘U‘ author or book that I can replace it with for #LitsyClassics? 😬

ReadingSusan I hate this book and have never been able to get though it. 6y
Librarybelle I‘m planning to read this one for that challenge: 6y
Lcsmcat @Librarybelle I second Utopia. It‘s very accessible. 6y

sprainedbrain @Librarybelle @Lcsmcat Thanks, ladies! I have a hold on it now. 😃 6y
MelissaSue81 Even the title bores me. 6y
CindyMyLifeIsLit I read this in college but it was extremely painful!! 6y
SW-T If you can‘t get Utopia in time, some other classics starting with u are Uncle Tom‘s Cabin (Stowe), Uncle Silas (Le Fanu), or Ugly Duckling (Andersen). 6y
JamieArc This is one of those books I am glad I was forced to read in college because I could never get through it on my own! So cheers to you for trying. With Joyce (I‘m thinking of Finnegan‘s Wake too) just trying is a win! 6y
sprainedbrain @SW-T Thanks so much! I‘ve read Uncle Tom‘s Cabin, but the others are on my list now. 😃 6y
sprainedbrain @CindyMyLifeIsLit @JamieArc I never had to read this one in college... I‘m not sure if that was lucky or not. I plan to try again someday with Ulysses, but I don‘t think I want to read any more books that involve extra work this year. 😂 6y
Ncostell I very rarely DNF books but I‘ve tried Ulysses twice and just couldn‘t do it. I read for my book starting with U 6y
MemoirsForMe I really enjoyed this one and it was short and sweet: 6y
sprainedbrain @Ncostell @Liz_M @UwannaPublishme thank you all!! I can always count on Litsy to help a reader in need. 😃 6y
BkClubCare @UwannaPublishme - LOVED this book! 6y
MemoirsForMe @BkClubCare Me too! An oldie but goodie 👍🏻 6y
davidRhee Don Gifford's Annotations is almost a must. Too many obscure references. Very tedious to have the two side by side but totally worth it 6y

You like buddy reads? You like chunksters? You‘ve wanted to tackle this French classic for a long time?

Then join @vivastory and me in a buddy read of Les Misérable in September! Whether you are going for the abridged or unabridged edition, the schedule above should work, and we have weekly discussions on Sundays, but feel free to post during the week as well. Oh, and did I mention there will be a few giveaways for participants?

Join us!

Tianarose Ooh! I should do this! I‘ve been trying to hack my way through this book for years! 6y
TheBookAddict I may actually join you all on this adventure! 6y
Kalalalatja @Tianarose @TheBookAddict please do! The more the merrier! 👏👏 6y

MelissaSue81 I‘m in!! 6y
mklong I‘m in too! 6y
MelissaSue81 So, I have a print abridged edition, or obviously can get the full version on kindle.. which should I do? 6y
Crewgurl I‘m in! 6y
Kalalalatja @MelissaSue81 both me and @vivastory are doing the unabridged edition, but it is completely fine for you to read the abridged. Both editions should be divided into five volumes, so the schedule should work either way 👍 6y
Kalalalatja @Crewgurl welcome to the club! 👏👏 6y
Tianarose @Kalalalatja how does it work? I‘ve never done a buddy read. Is there a tag to follow? 6y
Kalalalatja @Tianarose we actually don‘t have a tag, maybe we should have @vivastory ? But otherwise you just follow myself and Scott (☝️) as one of post discussion questions each Sunday (probably Scott 😄), and you can also make a post about any thought you have about the book and tag us in it. 6y
underthebelljar Hmm been meaning to get to Les Mis for a while.. Maybe I‘ll join you! I‘ll probably go with the abridged version though 😝 6y
Kalalalatja @BookishJess any way that works for you works for us 😄👍 6y
AnneCecilie I'm in. Thinking about reading it on Serial Reader 6y
sprainedbrain I have this book on my 2018 tbr plan, so I‘m in. The dates above are the start dates for each volume, or the end dates? 6y
vivastory @sprainedbrain The end dates. Another #1001book you can check off! 6y
vivastory I have not managed to think of a good hashtag for the buddy read. 😬 6y
Kalalalatja @AnneCecilie that sounds like a good way to do it! 6y
Kalalalatja @sprainedbrain welcome aboard! 👏👏 6y
Kalalalatja @vivastory we can always go with the standard #LesMisBuddyRead? #MisérableReaders doesn‘t sound all that motivating ? 6y
vivastory 😂Yeah, that might drive people away. #LesMisBuddyRead works for me. 6y
BarbaraJean Ooooh, this is so tempting! I‘ve been meaning to read this one for yeeeeears! I‘m participating in another buddy read starting in September, so I‘ll have to see if I can juggle two buddy reads at the same time. 😬 6y
Kalalalatja @BarbaraJean if you feel like it, you are more than welcome to join! 😊 6y
BarbaraJean @Kalalalatja I‘m gonna try to keep up! 6y
LaLecture Hm I‘m thinking about joining the buddy read because it would be an awesome reason to finally start the book. It‘s been on my tbr shelf forever as the unabridged version is just so huge and im kinda afraid of starting it 😅😂. But it has so many pages and the writing is not the easiest - I would never manage to read it in such a short time :/. 6y
Kalalalatja @LaLecture I know a lot of littens are going to do both print and audio, and some are even doing it on serial reader, so that might be options worth looking into? Also, it is completely fine to go with the abridged version, you can still keep the same schedule as with the unabridged, you are just reading fewer pages 👍 6y
LaLecture @Kalalalatja I‘m too proud to read an abridged version as I wanna be able to say I‘ve read the real, unabridged book 😂😅. Serial reader might be an idea although I might get confused by switching languages (my edition is in German). But I guess I‘ll just try and do my best 😅. Les Mis is my favourite musical ever and I‘ve always wanted to read the book so this buddy read is a great opportunity :). 6y
Kalalalatja @LaLecture haha, I know that feeling all too well 😅 and fun that you are doing the German version! My print copy is in English, but the only e-copies I can find from my library are Danish, so I might end up doing double language as well. Hope you find a way that works for you 😊👍 6y

I‘m excited about my new method of choosing my next read! I wrote all my #1001Book titles that I own on post-it notes, folded them up and threw them into a bowl! This will help me stick to my resolution of reading my shelves! #TBRBowlOfDestiny

Morr_Books What did you pick? 6y
AshleyHoss820 @Morr_Books The first book chosen by the Almighty Bowl was 6y
AshleyHoss820 😊😊😊 6y

Morr_Books Nice! 👍 Own it but haven't read it. Can't wait to hear how it is. My husband insists I use a computer algorithm to choose... boring. 6y
AshleyHoss820 @Morr_Books I was in the same boat! This particular book has been sitting on my shelves for a LOOONG time! While computer algorithms can be useful, this is way more pretty! 😂😂🤣🤣 6y
Leniverse Sons and Lovers is the only D.H. Lawrence book I have genuinely liked. Not that I have read all of his work, mind you, but what I have read has ranged from "meh, alright" to "I think I would rather clean the toilet than read another page". But Sons and Lovers I thought was really good. 6y
AshleyHoss820 @Leniverse I‘m really glad to hear that!! I‘ve hear that Women in Love is a bit frustrating, so I‘m glad that Fate gave me this one first! 😄 6y
Leniverse I started Women in Love in January. Managed to get halfway through it. 😑 I still mean to finish it. This year. I'm just not sure how to get through it. Possibly by venting a lot on Litsy! 😆 6y
ValerieAndBooks Fun idea! How many slips are there 😊? 6y
AshleyHoss820 @Leniverse That sounds like a good idea! 😄😂 I‘m kinda dreading it! 😄 6y
AshleyHoss820 @ValerieAndBooks I JUST added my Kindle books too, so it‘s probably close to 400. 😄😊😱 6y
Liz_M Looks like fun! I can't always bring myself to read a random book, but make it a challenge and reading a random book for points that's a different story. 😁 6y
AshleyHoss820 @Liz_M I 😄😄😄 I agree! If I make it a game, it‘ll go better! So far, I am really liking Sons & Lovers. I‘m almost half done. So, the TBR Bowl of Destiny is 1/1! 😂😂😂 6y

On Chesil Beach | Ian McEwan

Pickpick

This slim little novel really packs a punch. A deceptively simple tale of a young married couple, on their wedding night in 1962, this novel covers only 2 short hours, yet is so emotionally complex.
It‘s McEwan, so of course the writing is gorgeous, but I wasn‘t expecting to be so gripped by the slow unraveling of their story. I felt so much for Florence and Edward..just so heartbreaking, and at times cringeworthy! I hope the film is as good! 5⭐️

Dragon I saw the trailer for the film the other day. It looked pretty good. 6y
Nute Great review. You‘re absolutely right. He knows how to grab a reader. 6y

Cinfhen Is this a #1001book 6y
KarenUK @cinfhen I‘m not sure.... could be? 🤔 6y
Cinfhen Is this on this list for #1001 @BarbaraBB !!??? 6y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen @KarenUK No it is not. There are eight books of McEwan on the list but not this one. Maybe it is too recently published, the last update of the list was in 2012... 6y
Cinfhen Thanks @BarbaraBB ❣️❣️❣️ 6y
KarenUK @BarbaraBB 8! Wow! This is from 2008, so guess they didn‘t think this one worthy enough! 6y
BarbaraBB I think 8 is too much of any writer, but I would have preferred On Chesil Beach to some other McEwans! @Cinfhen 6y
Cinfhen I agree @BarbaraBB 8 from one author is too many 6y
