I‘m still not a big fan of the epistolary format. However a solid story about a first year teacher and her struggles with the system. #LitsyClassics #u 15/26 #2018christyread

1. Sylvia Barrett from Up the Down Staircase
2. Hamlet (the beginning of a lifelong live affair)
3. A People's History of the United States
4. No (did give a shout-out to my elementary school librarian though 😉)

Back to my #LitsyAtoZ books. Glad I chose this one for #LetterU, a big NYT bestseller in the 60s. Get this: the entire book is a compilation of faculty notices, teacher memos, letters + student doodles-and it works! Made me reminisce about my old schooldays and appreciate my teachers like Bel who really cared. It's worth reading the ebook just for the updated intro by the author, who at 99 years old, was still teaching a class! @BookishMarginalia
Bel Kaufman is a genius! As an NYC teacher myself, I found this book both comforting and sad. On the one hand, it's comforting to feel like I am not alone in the struggle and the idealism of wanting to help young people. On the other hand, I have to wonder in a macrocosm kind of way, "Will things ever get better?"
While it was frustrating to see that some ridiculous pieces of the school system are things that have never changed, I did mostly enjoy this book. Its format caught me off guard, and so I'm not sure if my feeling that I wish there had been more is due to the format or not, but I liked it nevertheless. #BookBingo2017 #RogueBookBingo #AProtagonistWithYourProfession

One of my favorite books about teaching features one of my favorite female characters (Sylvia Barrett). #augustphotochallenge
