I loved this novel, and learned so much about India that I hadn‘t known. Subhash was my favorite character (so glad he got his happy ending!) but Lahiri made me love all of them a bit. Well, maybe I just pitied his mother. So happy to finally get to this one. #doublespin #24in2024

I like the story as well as writing style of Lahiri. I love her vivid description & development of characters.But the story was too lengthy. I enjoyed the part set in India but the later half of the book was a tiresome read. Communist activity background was interesting. Overall it‘s in between pick & so-so read 3🌟/5🌟

This was an interesting look at how some people are haunted by their past, and how that can influence their life choices going forward. Overall it was a bit bleak and sad. The way the ending unfolded explained a few things and made me slightly more sympathetic to one of the characters. But only slightly. I've read another book by her that I vastly preferred.

Wow, I loved this sweeping family saga! This was my first Lahiri, and I am in awe of her writing. I can‘t wait to read the rest of her work. ❤️

Excited for our sibling book club tomorrow! I just finished the book today. I love how Udayan plays such a big role in Subhash‘s life, showing how intertwined siblings can be, for better or for worse, with that knowledge or without.

Um, relatable. #quarantine:

“There was the anxiety that one day would not follow the next, combined with the certainty that it would. It was like holding her breath[…]And yet somehow she was breathing. Just as time stood still but was also passing, some other part of her body that she was unaware of what is now drying oxygen, forcing her to stay alive” (132-133).

“She thought that her legs with buckle, there was no strengthen them. Nothing was supporting her. But she continued to stand” (124).

Um, so this happened...I was reading the book and it went from page 84-117! Suuuper weird. Next thing I knew, there was a fresh copy, all pages included, in my mailbox. 🤔So either, the company I ordered it from realized their mistake and sent a new one from a different company or I ordered it twice...haven‘t checked yet because you know, quarantine+doing things=ha!

My latest book club book.
Something was lacking with this story. I found it a bit flat and it lacked depth or passion or something. I wanted to feel more emotion for the characters than what I did.

I liked this book more than I expected. It is a family saga set in turbulent Calcutta and quiet Rhode Island. It‘s about brothers and wives, mothers and daughters. Above all it is about people making choices for themselves and the consequences of those choices for others. Lahiri is a thoughtful storyteller with a lot to tell.

What a wonderfully written book.
This was riveting in its pace and delivery and it kept me mulling over the experiences of all the characters.

Potentially this has all the elements I look for... fingers crossed!

Enjoyable. Nice references to rhode island farmers.

I enjoyed this. The Namesake will@alway be my favorite but I love how Lahiri tells a story.

Great decision.
The story sticks to author's narrative around Indian immigrant, nicely depicting the journey that a relationship undergoes subjected to an individual's decision, circumstances and time.
The book weaves through societal expectations, personal conviction and the fragility yet resilience of relationships. The perforating effect of words and actions through generations kept me intact till the end.

The tagged book was for bookclub a few years ago, it produced good discussion. Two brothers living in Calcutta who were once super close grow apart as one heads to America. When one brother dies the other offers his young bride a #tickettoride to America. This arrangement is met with plenty of resistance from the family & the bride too❣️

My grab from a Little Free Library by my dad‘s house. It‘s a gamble. Anyone read it before?

If you're into books such as Brick Lane or stuff by Khaled Hosseini, you will definitely enjoy this book. It's refreshing to read about cultures that are so different from your own. So many different situations in this book, no right, no wrong, simply what is culturally acceptable and what is not. It's an emotional book and a very enjoyable read.

Though I didn‘t connect with this story as much as other works by Lahiri, the writing, as always, is utterly beautiful.

Two brothers, close in age and inseparable as children, eventually find their paths in life diverging. Subhash is the elder brother, steady and loyal, while Udayan is bold and reckless. Udayan‘s involvement with violent revolutionaries has life-changing consequences that will span generations.

I feel drained, depleted, but still loved the book. Beautifully written. I knew nothing of the communist revolution in Calcutta and now want to read more about that. The ending of the novel is hard. Brace yourself.

I'm sorry Littens but I had to bail. It's true what they say, Jhumpa Lahiri is an amazing writer: assured, lucid and clean. But for me this read like an elegant history lesson. It felt aloof and flat and I did not care about the characters. Maybe it's the lack of speech marks, but it seemed like she wanted to tell us about the Naxalite movement in India & events were contrived to serve that end. Too 'written' for me. Udayan seems to channel the sprit of #Lithium - somewhere between reckless and revolutionary - "in a daze 'cos I found God". But so far unfortunately the book doesn't have the energy of the song. (To be fair, Jhumpa Lahiri may not be aiming for a Nirvana read-alike!) Memories of first year uni are made of this song - new and anarchic. #Rocktober ?

I adore Jhumpa Lahiri's writing. Her use of language feels like fresh, cool water and it leaves me feeling calm and clean. This is a beautiful, complicated book about family, love, and how the choices we make in life affect those close to us. I also loved that each section of the book was in itself a complete (long) short story and each chapter within each section was also a complete short story. Masterfully written, as always.

Loved it. Story about two Indian brothers; one comes to the US as a student, the other is a revolutionary and killed by Indian police. Couldn't put it down. Amazing author. 5 out of 5.

This is a book that you should take your time with... & because I read it for a book club & because I'm someone who has trouble living in the now (always anticipating my next read), I couldn't give it the slow, luxuriating attention it deserves. However, if I had truly loved it, I would have treasured the time it took. It's rich, evocative, literary & philosophical but rarely warm. I've heard this is her weakest book; I want to try "The Namesake."
