The Beauty of Humanity Movement
The Beauty of Humanity Movement: A Novel | Camilla Gibb
7 posts | 7 read | 15 to read
The acclaimed author of Sweetness in the Belly journeys to Vietnam in this rich and tantalizing new novel. Raised in the United States but Vietnamese by birth, Maggie has come to Hanoi seeking clues to the fate of her father, a dissident artist who disappeared during the war. Her search brings her to Old Man Hu'ng's pho stall. The old man once had a shop frequented by revolutionary artists, but now Tu', a hustling young entrepreneur, is his most faithful customer. Maggie, Hu'ng, and Tu' come together during a highly charged season that will mark them forever. Exploring the indelible legacies of war and art, as well as love's power to renew, The Beauty of Humanity Movement is a stellar achievement by a globally renowned literary light.

This was a gentle story that takes place in Vietnam. Maggie, born in Vietnam but raised in America, goes back to her birth country seeking information about her father. Along the way, friendships are born. And lots of Pho is eaten, leaving me wanting to stop for a bowl. #Pop23 ~a book by an author with the same initials as you

squirrelbrain Hooray - you must be nearly finished by now, as you‘ve read loads recently?! 13mo
Cortg @squirrelbrain I still have 4 on the top and 3 on the bottom! I started another audio yesterday but reading a work bookclub book that doesn‘t fit a category 😫 I‘m a bit behind but chugging along, we‘ll see if it gets completed. Time will tell. 13mo

Crazy when you find a book on a blog and there‘s not a single physical copy in your entire county‘s library system. Gotta love Hoopla! #bookspinbingo

(This is one of the 3 books I‘m hoping to read for the South Asia prompt in the Reading Around The World Challenge.)

#GetMovin #human I picked this book because it has both human & move in the title.😉Plus the big bowls of pho served by Old Man Hu'ng in Hanoi will get you movin' to your nearest noodle restaurant. I reviewed this book back when I was still eating meat & grabbed some from a favorite pho place here & made a shrimp salad inspired by my reading for my book tour review. I miss pho-I try to get behind the veggie versions but it's just not the same.🍲😥

Cinfhen Once again, you OWN the challenge!!!! Can‘t wait for you to cohost!!! I have you down for Feb 2019😂😂😂 7y

Day 11 #AprilBookShowers #setinsoutheastasia I spent quite a bit of time in Southeast Asia for work years ago mainly in the Philippines, Thailand, Singapore & Malaysia and enjoy books set there-both fiction & foodie travel. These books are some on my shelves that are set or primarily set in Southeast Asian countries & all are enjoyable. 👍📚

Day 13 #marchintoreading #commonwealthauthors Here are six books by five commonwealth authors. The top three are books I've read and enjoyed and the bottom three books are on my current #TBR stack/list. The authors are Camilla Gibb (UK-born Canadian) Ovidia Yu (Singapore), Michelle Pretorius (South Africa), Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie (Nigeria), & Kiran Desai (India). Now if I can just find the time to work the bottom three books in! 📚📚😬📚📚

rachaich I have The Inheritance of Loss on my pile. Lived Purple Hibiscus :) 8y
BarbaraJean Purple Hibiscus is soooo good! I remember going to a friend's birthday party while I was in the middle of reading it. I spent the entire party thinking longingly of the book sitting at home. I generally prefer books to parties anyway, but I remember being especially sad about this book being interrupted by that party! 8y
DebinHawaii @rachaich @BarbaraJean Good to hear about Purple Hibiscus. I may move it up the TBR stack! 📚👍😀 8y

I love stories that have interweaving narratives that come together in unexpected ways and this book does that so well. It's a story of war and poverty, a coming-of-age tale, and a search for identity and origins all wrapped up together. And it will make you crave pho. I read it a few years ago on a plane and found the nearest pho restaurant as soon as we landed. I'm telling you, it's powerful. #somethingforsept #mademehungry

Cinfhen Loved your review, into the stack 8y
