I looked and looked at my salad trying to guess what it was. When it could not be avoided anymore, I took a bite and it WAS tuna fish, marshmallows, walnuts pimento (just for the pretty color our hostess told us latter when she gave us the recipe), and chunks of pure white lettuce and boiled dressing…the other ladies shrieked “delicious” and “heavenly” and “so different” (that I could go along with).

This was an interesting memoir. I was honestly surprised by how long ago it was written, because the author had a very modern, light, voice. But there were stunning moments of racism and domestic violence that were mentioned so casually that it was a little terrifying. So I couldn‘t begrudge anyone skipping this.

I recently picked up a copy of Onions in the Stew for a friend after seeing it on her TBR. I couldn‘t resist getting both of these for myself as well, since I‘ve heard great things about Anybody from a bookclub meeting, and I totally loved Mrs Piggle-Wiggle as a kid. ❤️📚

TheAromaofBooks Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle!! I loved those books!! 4y

Trying real hard not to give into the temptation to finish Sense and Sensibility tonight (chapter a day plan officially fell apart this week), so opting for this last volume of MacDonald's memoirs.

This is an oldie but a goodie! Written by the author of The Egg and I and the Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle books, this is the story of raising her kids on an island in Puget Sound. I laughed out loud all the way through this book!

AmyG Oh, how I loved Mrs. Piggle Wiggle. When the library opens I will have to look for this book. 5y
CindyMyLifeIsLit @AmyG She has written 4 autobiographical books. The first is The Egg and I, which details her childhood and life as a young bride on a chicken farm in Washington state. SO funny!! It was made into a movie and spawned the series “The Kettles” about the characters Ma and Pa Kettle. The others are Anybody Can Do Anything and The Plague and I, about her time in a tuberculosis sanitarium. If you can make that funny, you‘re truly gifted—and she does! 😂 5y

I discovered this on Hoopla when I was looking for an audiobook not knowing anything about Betty MacDonald. This was her story of life with her family in the 1950s on the island of Vashon, located in the Puget Sound. She‘s very humorous and had many funny anecdotes of the trials and tribulations of living on the island and raising adolescents (which apparently involved a lot of cocktails and cigarettes back in the day).

rubyslippersreads I love her books. My favorite (though you wouldn‘t think there could possibly be anything funny about the subject matter) is 6y
Ncostell @rubyslippersreads I‘ll definitely have to check it out! I do want to read her earlier books having really enjoyed this one. 6y
Dragon I watched an old movie based on her book 6y
Ncostell @Dragon. I‘ll have to look out for that too! 6y
