Lullaby
Lullaby | Chuck Palahniuk
Ever heard of a culling song? Its a lullaby sung in Africa to give a painless death to the old or infirm. The lyrics of a culling song kill, whether spoken or even just thought. You can find one on page 27 of Poems and Rhymes from Around the World, an anthology that is sitting on the shelves of libraries across the country, waiting to be picked up by unsuspecting readers. Reporter Carl Streator discovers the songs lethal nature while researching Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, and before he knows it, hes reciting the poem to anyone who bothers him. As the body count rises, Streator glimpses the potential catastrophe if someone truly malicious finds out about the song. The only answer is to find and destroy every copy of the book in the country. Accompanied by a shady real-estate agent, her Wiccan assistant, and the assistants truly annoying ecoterrorist boyfriend, Streator begins a desperate cross-country quest to put the culling song to rest. Written with a style and imagination that could only come from Chuck Palahniuk, Lullaby is the latest outrage from one of our most exciting writers at work today.

Delightfully unhinged; just what I expected from Palahniuk. A wild tale about a ragtag team of people trying to save the world from a deadly lullaby, one book at a time. In particular I found the ending to be bizarrely endearing - not what I expected!

So I knew this book was going to be weird coming from Palahniuk but I just couldn‘t get into it. The characters were absolutely annoying to the point where I just started skimming page to make it though. It takes a lot for me to quit a book so I somehow stuck through to the end. Was it rewarding? Not really…the premise of the story was interesting just the characters fell flat for me.

Palahniuk has a tendency to use essentially the same characters in all of his book which can grow a bit old. Fortunately that‘s not the case here. He takes a simple premise and really makes it work. I‘d say this is one of his best novels that never really drags.

Does anyone else sometimes literally 'judge a book by its cover' and have substantial success? I hate to admit it but other than suggestions and classic reads, I've found some of my favorite books based solely on the intriguing cover art. I'm curious to see if anyone else indulges in this otherwise taboo faux pas for lack of a better description😂😶

wanderinglynn I‘ve bought a book solely on the cover before. But what usually happens for me is that the cover will catch my eye, then I read the synopsis & if the synopsis sounds good, I‘ll buy it. 6y
Shelby_Q Oh absolutely. If the description isn't as eye-catching then i won't get it but it usually turns out okay😊 6y

When I finish a book and my first thought is, "that was $&%# up", I know I read something special. Lullaby is a dark comedy about a journalist and a real estate agent who set out to destroy all copies of a book of childrens' poems because one of them, when read aloud, kills the listeners. They travel with a Wiccan and a bioterrorist, and learn along the way that they can trust no one, especially themselves.

LapReader I have a question Andrea. How do I make the cornbread to go with the Cowboy Casserole? I am making it for the kids on Tues night and am not sure what else to put with it. Also did the Tim Tam balls work out?xo 7y
AWahle @LapReader I forgot that cornbread is an American thing! Oops! Do you have cornmeal? Our boxes usually have a recipe. Or I could email you one, but you'd still need cornmeal. A salad goes well with this meal. 7y
AWahle @LapReader The Tim Tam Balls were a hit at my work potluck! My hubby hates coconut, so I rolled half of them in crushed pretzels. 7y
LapReader Is cornmeal the same thing as polenta? My email is allissanalder@yahoo.com.au That would be great mate. 7y

Helen was a little too close to the lady from Invisible Monster‘s for me but I really liked the way this book attacked duality. I wish Palahniuk would‘ve done more with the middle chapters rather than just car ride car ride car ride. Overall, this story was nuts and the prose daunting.

I haven't read much Palahniuk but I thought the portion of the Jenny Lawson title- 'A funny book about horrible things' could be used for pretty much any Palahniuk title. This one had several lol moments- you can imagine the possibilities with a character finding a 'culling song' where saying, reading, or even thinking the words has the power to kill someone in his proximity. Thanks for the giveaway @Clwojick ! 🙂 #furiouslyreading

Reggie My favorite of his is Haunted. If you can make it past the first story of the bus driver, your good. Lol 7y

In true Palahniuk fashion, all the characters are hot messes. But, enjoyable hot messes that you end up liking and empathizing with. This book is pretty dark, as far as what the lullaby actually is and does, and what has brought all these characters together.

"Every generation wants to be the last. Every generation hates the next trend in music they can't understand. We hate to give up those reins of our culture. To find our own music playing in elevators. The ballad for our revolution, turned into background music for a television commercial. To find our generation's clothes and hair suddenly retro." Man, this book is endlessly quotable.
