Powder and Patch | Georgette Heyer
17 posts | 20 read | 5 to read
"Georgette Heyer is unbeatable!" -SUNDAY TELEGRAPH For her, he would do anything... Plainspoken country gentleman Philip Jettan won't bother with a powdered wig, high heels, and fashionable lace cuffs, until he discovers that his lovely neighbor is enamored with a sophisticated man-about-town... But what is it that she really wants? Cleone Charteris sends her suitor Philip away to get some town polish, and he comes back with powder, patches, and all the manners of a seasoned rake. Does Cleone now have exactly the kind of man she's always wanted, or was her insistence on Philip's remarkable transformation a terrible mistake? What readers say: "Charming, charming, charming. And highly readable!" "Witty dialogue and well-developed storylines-even Jane Austen could do no better." "Scintillating and very human love story by an author of exceptional talents." "Ms Heyer's effervescent wit and obvious ability to tell a good and humorous story is already evident, making Powder and Patch an enjoyable and worthwhile read." "This story sparkles with witty dialogue and wonderful descriptions of costumes and festivities of the 1700s. I re-read it at least once a year and I enjoy it as much as the first time, again and again!"

My Heyer loving friend brought this one and The Nonesuch to our last book group meeting for me to borrow. This is an early one, and I think it shows, but I had a thoroughly good time with it any way. I found French polished Philip very amusing indeed.

mabell I just read this one and didn‘t care for it (the time period and French influence was interesting though!) It‘s been quite a few years since I read it, but I really enjoyed the Nonesuch. 9mo
batsy Those vintage Pan editions! 😍 9mo
LeahBergen Not a favourite of mine either but still a fun read. They all are! 😄 9mo

CarolynM @LeahBergen I don‘t think it will be a favourite of mine either, but did make me laugh😆 9mo

Mehso-so

This was not my favorite Heyer. It was a bit too silly at times. And I have learned that I want to like the female protagonist in a Heyer novel - I want to root for her and see her happy - and I just wasn‘t a fan of Cleone.
@mabell @Chrissyreadit @TheAromaofBooks

Chrissyreadit Fair!!! 9mo
TheAromaofBooks Cleone just didn't get much page time?? I never really rooted for her and Phillip as a couple because I felt like we never saw them together. 9mo
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks That‘s true. This book was really more about Philip, and the transformation she required him to undergo. 9mo
mabell Yes, I really just wanted Philip to be happy 😆 9mo

This was not my favorite Heyer- but a lot of that is because I do not speak French and was too tired to use google translate. The story was a Grease in reverse- and I liked the overall end result. Everyone wants Phillip to change- but when he does they realize the original was better.

mabell I didn‘t care for this one much at all 😆 9mo
Chrissyreadit @mabell i was annoyed in parts and entertained in parts… 9mo
CindyMyLifeIsLit I loved how he got revenge for their hurtful dissatisfaction with his authentic self. Be careful what you wish for! 😂 9mo

TheAromaofBooks I think part of the problem is I set kind of high standards for Heyer, and this book didn't meet them 😂 It was fine as a random book, but didn't rank well on the Heyer scale!! 😆 9mo
Chrissyreadit @CindyMyLifeIsLit I agree- that was the part i liked- 9mo
Chrissyreadit @TheAromaofBooks I agree- this felt “sloppy” to me. 9mo
julieclair “Grease in reverse” is the perfect way to describe this. I did like that his authentic self won out in the end. 9mo

@Chrissyreadit @TheAromaofBooks @mabell I‘m not very far into this month‘s #HappyFiction book yet, but I‘ve lost track of our discussion. Are we doing it on StoryGraph, or did we decide to do something else? 🤪

mabell So relatable 🤣 🙋‍♀️ It‘s on Storygraph this time https://app.thestorygraph.com/readalongs/a8095fe9-5674-45f7-9ab6-b5a10cd41f2f 9mo
julieclair @mabell Thank you! Glad you can relate! 🤪 9mo
TheAromaofBooks In the final section of Powder & Patch I did post the link to the April SG discussion for Wind in the Willows, too!! @mabell @Chrissyreadit (edited) 9mo

julieclair @TheAromaofBooks 👍👍 So excited for Wind in the Willows! Would you believe I‘ve never read it? 9mo
TheAromaofBooks It's been years since I have read it, but I remember thinking it was super sweet and adorable. I'm really excited about rereading it, and since it starts with Mole abandoning his spring cleaning because the weather is so nice, it seems like a good read for this time of year 😂 9mo
julieclair @TheAromaofBooks Abandoning Spring cleaning? I‘m a Mole fan already! 🤩 9mo

This book got way better after page 90.

Vansa This is one of my favourite Heyers! I can't say I care too much for Cleone, who's rather silly, but she's also just a teenager. I love his makeover, and specially love that it's a guy getting a makeover and not the girl taking off her glasses and becoming a hottie! 3y
ManyWordsLater @Vansa it got a little cringe-y when lady marmalade-whatever was talking about what girls want. But the ending with perfect. 3y
Vansa @ManyWordsLater oh that bit is completely ridiculous and stereotypical, though I'm inclined to forgive because I see so many women writing now who still write women so badly!Lady Marmalade😂😂😂LOVE it.Always going to refer to her that way now 3y

Sixty pages in. Do I want to spend my time reading a 1920s historical romance?

I‘m leaning toward “no” but I‘m going to give it another few chapters.

ShyBookOwl Good luck! I generally know within 50 pages if I'm actually going to enjoy something, but every now and then I push through and am pleasantly surprised 3y
Linsy Love that cover tho! 3y

I'm not sure which chapter title wins. "Philip Delivers Himself of a Rondeau" or
"Philip Justifies His Chin"

There is a lot French in it, more than I remember. But the story is so much fun. That I remembered correctly.

5/5 💫 What an utterly delightful treat of a book! It gave #allthefeels and it‘s fairly rare I find a book that does so. Such a shame it‘s so short a story. Phillip and Cleone are delightful MCs and it‘s near impossible not to adore Phillip! https://mysticreadsbookblogblog.wordpress.com/2018/05/03/powder-and-patch-by-geo... #georgian #historicalfiction #georgetteheyer #booklover #bookblogger #bookaddict #bibliophile

So, after a stressful day I‘m dedicating my evening to self-care. I‘m also going to watch Hampstead and finish this book, like I tried to last night but couldn‘t because of poorly baby. 👶 My little one is feeling better today and is fast asleep so fingers crossed 🤞 #Historicalfiction #georgetteheyer #georgian #currentread #booklover #bookblogger #bibliophile

Having an absolutely horrid day today, it‘s only 9:55am and I‘ve already cried three times. I‘m so glad my baby is at nursery and not here to see me so upset. I hate days like this but it feels a bit better if I unload so I‘m sorry for this emotional nonbookish post.

julesG I feel you! Just had a phone conversation that went... A bit of a cry, opening a package from. A friend and now some fresh air and a book. Glad my kids are at school and won't see me right now. Hang in there! I'm certain things will get better. 7y

knittedgnome Hugs! Be gentle with yourself. It takes so long for hormones to level out. It's ok to have a sad day. 7y
Sophoclessweetheart @knittedgnome hugs. Thank you for your kind words. I don‘t think it‘s hormones, my daughter is three now 😅 I‘m sorry for the confusion. X 7y
knittedgnome @Wanderingwithwords well my baby is 15 and and mine have never gotten straightened out :) it's hard especially when they are little. I hope your day is starting to get a bit better. I know even just identifying that you are feeling emotional helps. 7y
Sophoclessweetheart @knittedgnome Ah! 😹 That makes me feel much less silly. It is hard, especially on your own, especially when your a student as well, but I wouldn‘t swap her for anything. She‘s my world. Bookmail just arrived and my daughter came home with “Lettuce” leaves for me so that‘s all cheered me up some. The lettuce was tree leaves btw 😹😹 7y
laurieluna Big hugs and love to you. Those days absolutely suck. Xxx 7y

My evening shall consist of finishing this most wonderful book, eating a salad bowl 🥗, drinking copious amounts of coffee and watching the film Hampstead (Has anyone seen this!? It looks so heartwarming!) and the starting the tv show Outlander finally. What are your Wednesday evening plans? This book is giving me #allthefeels and not because of the “romance”. I completely feel for dear Phillip, that poor misguided fellow. He shouldn‘t have to change who he is to be accepted by the woman he wishes to marry... heck! He shouldn‘t wish to marry someone who wishes such changes in him. If she don‘t want you at your “worst” then she don‘t deserve you at your “best”, babe! #historicalfiction #georgian #booklover #bookblogger #regency

Sarah83 A Peter Rabbit bookmark? 7y
Sophoclessweetheart @Sarah83 Yes!! It‘s Mrs Tiggywinkle. She‘s my favourite Beatrix Potter character. I‘m a big fan, I have been since I was a small child (naturally) but even now I enjoy reading them and am very interested in Beatrix‘s life. Are you a fan? X 7y
Sarah83 A big fan would be too much. I like the stories, but since I am German I got to know them, when I was about 18. Maybe I was too old then. 7y

Sophoclessweetheart @Sarah83 Maybe so. They are for children. But nostalgia and motherhood make them still enjoyable to me. X 7y
Sarah83 You are so right. I was in Hay-on-Wye several years ago and bought my Peter Rabbit edition there. 😍 7y
Sophoclessweetheart @Sarah83 Ooh! I‘ve never been there but I do wish to. I still have my childhood copy of all her books from 1996 but I‘ve brought many themed items for myself and my daughter over the years lol x 7y
Sarah83 I really do believe. It's such a nice place. There are themed bookshops. I haven't seen something like that again. You need to go there. 😉 7y
Sophoclessweetheart @Sarah83 I‘d hoped to when we went to Wales last September but we were too far away! 😅 I‘ll have to make conscious effort to holiday closer next time x 7y
Sarah83 Sounds like a good plan. 🙂😉 7y

I have to start my final assignment of this academic year today, then it‘s all about revision for my exam in June. My assignment is on the holocaust and as it‘s the last time I‘ll be likely to study this fascinating and important event, I‘m anxious to get started. That doesn‘t of course mean that I won‘t be certain to pick up my book now and again. Reading breaks 😉💛 #history #historicalfiction #georgian #booklover #bookblogger

On the advice of the many, I‘m trying out monthly TBR stacks to make my huge TBR smaller and more manageable. This is May‘s TBR stack of nine books with Despised and Rejected which is yet to arrive. I average around 10-11 books a month usually so I think nine is a realistic amount. I‘m going to stick with nine a month. #maytbr #booklover #bookblogger #bookish #bibliophile #history #nonfiction #historicalfiction #georgian #victorian
