Libro de Las Preguntas | Pablo Neruda
11 posts | 5 read | 3 to read
Pablo Neruda is one of the world's most popular poets, and The Book of Questions is Copper Canyon's all-time best-seller. This updated bilingual edition is entirely re-designed and features a new cover, new interior, and an introduction by translator. In The Book of Questions, Neruda refuses to be corralled by the rational mind. Composed of 316 unanswerable questions, these poems integrate the wonder of a child with the experiences of an adult. By turns Orphic, comic, surreal, and poignant, Neruda's questions lead the reader beyond reason into realms of intuition and pure imagination. Tell me, is the rose naked or is that her only dress? Why do trees conceal the splendor of their roots? Is there anything in the world sadder than a train standing in the rain? When Neruda died in 1973, The Book of Questions was one of eight unpublished poetry manuscripts that lay on his desk. In it, Neruda achieves a deeper vulnerability and vision than in his earlier work-and this unique book is a testament to everything that made Neruda an artist. "Neruda's questions evoke pictures that make sense on a visual level before the reader can grasp them on a literal one. The effect is mildly dazzling [and] O'Daly's translations achieve a tone that is both meditative and spontaneous." -Publishers Weekly Pablo Neruda, born in southern Chile, led a life charged with poetic and political activity. He was the recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature, the International Peace Prize, and served as Chile's ambassador to several countries, including Burma, France, and Argentina. He died in 1973. II. Tell me, is the rose naked or is that her only dress? Why do trees conceal the splendor of their roots? Who hears the regrets of the thieving automobile? Is there anything in the world sadder than a train standing in the rain? XIV. And what did the rubies say standing before the juice of pomegranates? Why doesn't Thursday talk itself into coming after Friday? Who shouted with glee when the color blue was born? Why doe

from Editor‘s Note:

“For this edition, we have drawn from 39 of the 74 poems, presenting a total of 70 questions. These questions represent parts of poems, with poem LVI being the only full poem in the book, but even in this case, not all of the poem‘s couplets appear on the same page. The 70 questions were arranged into more or less thematic groups, informed by the relationship between humans and the natural world, mind, and geography.”

On an orange tree share the sun?

Who wakes up the sun when it sleeps
upon its blazing bed?

Don‘t you see that apple blossoms bloom
In order to die as apples?”

Lesliereads @EvieBee @batsy It really IS a beautiful edition!💫 I am tempted to splurge on another copy so I have one to share with students on classroom visits, and one that stays home. 💝 3y
Lesliereads @merelybookish 😍Exactly what my eyeballs were doing when I happened upon it in the bookstore! 3y
Lesliereads @Nute It‘s going to be a challenge not to share every page! Some pages even fold out with more visual surprises. 3y
Nute I think that you have influenced one of the selections in my next book buying spree, Leslie!🙂 3y

Time for the bookish discussion question of the day 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! Here it is: Which books from India would you recommend? #BookTalk

MrBook @Sue , you're so incredible! 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 You never cease to awe and inspire *bows*. ☺️ 7y
Sue Sorry for the spam :) I found Black British interesting as it's from a POV I hadn't considered prior - a family so anglicised by the English that they are completely estranged from the language and culture of the local area so they have little choice but to leave India when the English pull out. 7y
Sue @mrbook aww, shucks 😊 7y
Melissa_J Rohinton Mistry lives in Canada now, but this is an incredible book set in India 🇮🇳 7y
Redwritinghood Agree with @Melissa_J. A Fine Balance is one of my favorite books. 7y
MarticaMustRead This one was wonderful 7y
MrBook @Sue When it comes to books, never be sorry. And when it comes to you, never be sorry. 🙌🏻 7y
LeeRHarry This book is definitely worth the effort- a fabulous sweeping family saga - loved it! 💕 7y
Sue @mrbook 😘 7y
Readerann Just going to list some others: The Ibis Trilogy by Amitav Ghosh, The Lowland, Clear Light of Day, The Marriage Bureau for Rich People, and the wonderful nonfiction Behind the Beautiful Forevers. 7y
Reecaspieces One of the bests books I have ever read 7y
batsy Have to give a shoutout to the amazing Kuzhali Manickavel 7y
Smarkies I loved A Suitable Boy. 7y
shawnmooney This one is heavy-going and sad, but brilliant: 7y
Aleida Shantaram is set in India. 7y
GlassAsDiamonds For non-fiction, any of Arubdhati Roy's NF and Holy Cow & Dreaming in Hindi for a foreigners take on living in India... 7y
GlassAsDiamonds Any of Dalrymple's India works... 😊(also non-fiction) 7y
GlassAsDiamonds Although it was controversial, the scholarship was proven (and not to sound snippy or jaded but just about everything's controversial at some point here). 7y
GlassAsDiamonds @Sue What did you think of Before We Meet the Goddess? I have very vague memories of reading Mistress of Spices but they're so vague as to be unhelpful!! 😊😊😊 7y
Sue @GlassAsDiamonds I really enjoyed it - the story was wonderfully evocative and heart wrenching too. (Holy Cow is sitting on my shelf but I haven't read it yet.) 7y
GlassAsDiamonds @Sue thanks! (Avoiding heart wrenching for the time being but I thought it might be in that vein!). 😊 7y

Today's #bookmail I also had card posted to say I have 3 parcels to collect at post office 😍📚👍🏼 I couldn't find the English print of The Book of Questions in the Litsy database, although my copy is in Spanish and English.

It says, 'How are you today? See that question mark, a gap between a stupidity and my desire to have you once more'

Taken from one of the best-selling Indonesian modern-poetry books, Tidak Ada New York Hari Ini (There's No New York Today), from the well-known Indonesian poetic author, M. Aan Mansyur (aka hurufkecil or tinyletter). I can't find his book to tag it here, so I tag the book from his favorite author. Hehe

BINGO! I'm probably way too excited about finishing my #BookBingoNW2016 blackout square, but completing this made my OCD side very happy. There are some gorgeously illustrated ones out there, too - I've seen at least one with mini-book covers for each square. #summerreading #summerofbooks

I'm new to netgalley and was wondering if any of you that use the site regularly have any insight or advice about using it. Is there a "typical" wait time before ??/??? Thoughts about the >80% rule (does it really help)? Any observations you might have are appreciated!!! Thanks!!!

Reviewsbylola It seems random to me. I have a pretty bad feedback rating because when I joined a couple of years ago I requested waaaaaay more books than I could read but I still get approved for a good amount. Some get approved quickly, some take forever or never respond. 8y
Well-ReadNeck @Reviewsbylola What happens to the never respond? Do they just move off your pending list when they are archived? 8y
Shemac77 I'm new to netgalley too and I'm thinking on cancelling. I'm not a fan of reading on a kindle and I find the wait somewhat frustrating. 8y

Suzze I use NetGalley and Edelweiss. I only use NetGalley if a book isn't available on Edelweiss as I am preapproved for most of the publishers there and don't have to do requests much. Also, the titles on NG seem to always be for30 days from download, but EW is often until the actual release date (or at least 60 days). 8y
Well-ReadNeck @Shemac77 Is there any downside to sticking around and using it less? 8y
Sue I'm pretty new to the whole thing too. My percentage is sitting at about 38 as I got approved for a whopping pile which I didn't expect. I suspect the thoughts differ from publisher to publisher, and even from book to book. I've been having pretty good success with some of the smaller publishers. 8y
Reviewsbylola I actually don't know. Is assume it says pending until it is archived but I don't pay attention. 8y
Well-ReadNeck @Suzze Ooooh, I haven't heard about Edelweiss. Are there requirements to sign up? 8y
Well-ReadNeck One of the things I'm trying to figure out is whether I should put in for my B list books (ones I might not otherwise read or pick up, but sound interesting enough) in order to get some approvals and reviews on file to boost my chances of getting my A list books. My policy with ARC requests otherwise is that I don't request them unless I would have read them anyway. But, I'm willing to do a little work for reward. 8y
Suzze @Well-ReadNeck You're a blogger? Try here....http://help.abovethetreeline.com/ 8y
Well-ReadNeck @Suzze Awesome! Thanks. Also considering Blogging for Books. Have u tried that one? 8y
Suzze @Well-ReadNeck I don't blog. I'm a bookseller. I'm too busy reading to blog! 8y
overlyattachedreader Most of mine have been approved within a week, except any imprint related to Penguin. Some of those have been pending for over a month! 😀 In the beginning I reviewed a ton of children's books, humor books and samplers in the Read Now section to boost my numbers. It seems to have worked, because I've gotten approved for most everything I requested (except for those pesky pending Penguins!). 8y
NerdyRev I get approved more on NetGalley than Edelweiss for some reason. I found having an 80-85% rating helps get approvals. Don't go nuts and request what you can read. My max is 8 out and then I stop. It usually takes a week or so. My advice is build trust with publishers and write an honest review. I have found not choosing the same genre all the time helps. 8y
Shemac77 Probably not but my bookshelves are full of books I have yet to read so I feel like I'm more suited to the book in hand rather than the book on a screen. I'd really like to like it but it's just not my cuppa. 8y
Vexingcircumstance I haven't reached 80% yet and I rarely get turned down for a book. Once I was over 50% I started getting approved for most of my requests. 8y
Vexingcircumstance I got my percentage and reviews numbers up by requests the Read Now books and random children's books. The more I requested and left feedback for the more I got approved for my A list requests. 8y
AStoriedSoul I try to make sure and have a review posted by the release date as that's what publishers are hoping to get from giving review copies: advanced feedback. Make sure you have a good percentage. Approval time depends on the publisher. 8y
Jessicav Yeah I haven't been following the 80/20 rule. I get approved most of the time, and sometimes when I'm not, it's not unexpected. I've been approved for way more than I've left feedback on (not that I really recommend that) and my blog is basically defunct. It does likely help that I'm a librarian with collection responsibilities. 8y
Well-ReadNeck Thanks, all!!!! Great info. 😍😍😍 8y
