Good Kings, Bad Kings
Good Kings, Bad Kings | Susan Nussbaum
9 posts | 15 read | 7 to read
My first week I learned that people refer to ILLC as illsee. Emphasis on ill. The Illinois Learning and Life Skills Center may not sound like the name of a nursing home, but thats how they work it. Naming these places is all about misdirection. Inside, it smells, sounds, and looks like your standard-issue nursing home. Same old wolf but in a lamb outfit. Told in alternating perspectives by a varied cast of characters, Good Kings, Bad Kings is a powerful and inspiring debut that invites us into the lives of a group of teenagers and staff who live at the ILLC. From Yessenia, who dreams of her next boyfriend, to Teddy, a resident who dresses up daily in a full suit and tie, and Mia, who guards a terrifying secret, Nussbaum has crafted a multifaceted portrait of a way of life that challenges our definitions of what it means to be disabled. In a story told with remarkable authenticity, their voices resound with resilience, courage and humour.

This story of ILLC, a nursing home for disabled kids and teens, as told by its residents and staff is bleakly honest about the greed, abuse, and other systemic problems that plague the institutions that house the most vulnerable. Vivid characters put a human face on this story and temper its bleakness with the hope of people who really care. The full cast audiobook performance makes this powerful story even more affecting. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

This is a book that everyone should read to understand how institutions work, to empathize with those who are failed by the system, and to be aware of their own outlook on their fellow human beings. When you consider yourself superior to another person for whatever reason - race, gender, ability, religion, etc., you may justify all kinds of horrible behaviors. It‘s a cautionary tale that‘s also woven with resilience and hope.

A work of fiction that could very well be true. You meet many characters that are part of this institution for disabled youth. You get to know many awesome human beings but along with that also comes the lowest of the low who are allowed to do what they do because generally these institutions are set up to be profit makers.

This novel was assigned for my disability studies lecture, and frankly, I was wary of it. But in a few short pages I was hooked into Nussbaum‘s artfully crafted examination of disability in the 21st century. Told through a series of character narrations, this book will challenged how you conceptualize the world around you. It is a book that badly needs to be a permanent part of public discourse.

Eye opening fiction about teens living in assisted living. I loved the perspectives and voices of the different characters!

It's rare that a book can portray disabled people without romanticizing them, but this one managed it. Nussbaum did a great job giving distinct voices to each character and giving a well rounded story. Recommended! I read this 300 page novel in a day. While fishing. While my parents were in town. And I got homework done.
