The Frozen River: A GMA Book Club Pick
The Frozen River: A GMA Book Club Pick | Ariel Lawhon
181 posts | 165 read | 2 reading | 72 to read
NATIONAL BESTSELLER GMA BOOK CLUB PICK AN NPR BOOK OF THE YEAR From the New York Times bestselling author of I Was Anastasia and Code Name Hlne comes a gripping historical mystery inspired by the life and diary of Martha Ballard, a renowned 18th-century midwife who defied the legal system and wrote herself into American history. "Fans of Outlanders Claire Fraser will enjoy Lawhons Martha, who is brave and outspoken when it comes to protecting the innocent. . . impressive."The Washington Post "Once again, Lawhon works storytelling magic with a real-life heroine." People Magazine Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the towns most respected gentlemenone of whom has now been found dead in the ice. But when a local physician undermines her conclusion, declaring the death to be an accident, Martha is forced to investigate the shocking murder on her own. Over the course of one winter, as the trial nears, and whispers and prejudices mount, Martha doggedly pursues the truth. Her diary soon lands at the center of the scandal, implicating those she loves, and compelling Martha to decide where her own loyalties lie. Clever, layered, and subversive, Ariel Lawhons newest offering introduces an unsung heroine who refused to accept anything less than justice at a time when women were considered best seen and not heard. The Frozen River is a thrilling, tense, and tender story about a remarkable woman who left an unparalleled legacy yet remains nearly forgotten to this day.

Out the gate, this bored me to tears, but I didn‘t want to bail on my first read of 2026. The mystery could not sustain the glacial pace, but my biggest gripe was the dialogue. It does not convey 1700s which took away historical authenticity for me. The Author‘s Note was really needed at the front, not the end. I could‘ve grabbed a Martha Ballard biography instead. I used to love historical fiction, but it has become my least fave genre.

TheBookHippie Finally someone who agrees with me!!!!! 🙌🏼 3d

I didn‘t intend to spend my entire Sunday reading this book but, once I started it, I was hooked. No regrets. Martha is a midwife in 1789 Maine who gets involved in trying to solve the murder of a man many people had reason to want to dead while supporting her friend in her accusations of rape against the most powerful man in town. She is a a force of nature as she seeks what is right and stays true to herself and her family. This was so good.

@bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

I liked this, not as much as I have seen others here but it was a well paced, keep you reading ride. I have a fear of pregnancy and birth so midwife takes are not my go to but I liked how the story really revolves around the community and centers on a murder.
I thought it was fascinating that our MC has an adult son she doesn't really seem to like,in a time of raise them correctly they will molded the way you intend.👇

ChaoticMissAdventures I thought there was some disjointedness with the story telling, Dr Fosters arrival and that offshoot of the story felt a bit tacked on and incomplete to me. I also occasionally struggled remembering who was who. But overall I found this to be quick paced and engrossing 2mo

Martha Ballard was a woman ahead of her times as the town midwife who has a penchant for justice, especially against men who have committed crime that she has experience with. Her loving husband and children become intertwined in the storyline and each character brings their own impact to the story. When the local judge is the person of interest in a rape charge from a woman, how will it play out? Well-written but a bit drawn out in my opinions.

Yikes taking this many liberties with the life story of a real historical figure makes me uneasy. Might‘ve been better to change names and just fictionalize it completely? But a zippy plot and a strong sense of place. I suppose if I take it in the spirit of “Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter,” I‘m good. But despite obvious research, just too much that didn‘t feel plausible. Strong characterizations by reader Jane Oppenheimer kept me listening. 2023

CSeydel Yes! I thought it was a strong story from a literary point of view, but I was very uncomfortable with the author taking a real person and writing about her experiencing a rape that there‘s no evidence for, just because “we know it happened all the time, so it could be true, who knows” - no, no, no. 3mo
SamAnne Completely agree with your review. 3mo

4/5 - Really enjoyed this historical fiction, very well written. Inspired by the life of Martha Ballard, this book is set in Hallowell, a small town in Maine, in 1789, during a long cold winter. Through Martha, midwife and healer, we get to know the inhabitants, their secrets, the hidden politics of the town. The book begins with a body discovered in the icy river, a man allegedly accused of the brutal rape of a woman.

4 Stars • The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon is a historical mystery set in 1789 Maine, following midwife Martha Ballard. When a man‘s body is found frozen in the river, Martha investigates, uncovering a scandal involving rape and betrayal. Balancing her role as a healer and truth-seeker, she challenges powerful men in her town. The novel blends suspense, historical detail, and Martha‘s fierce resilience.

Right away we‘re in the midst of watching midwife, Martha Ballard, help deliver a baby in the late 1700s and then told she is needed to see to the dead body just pulled from the river. She declares it was murder. Its slice of life, lotsa midwifing, community. There is also a sexual assault and gender inequality that still reads in a “yeah, that‘s what would happen today” 200 years later. Depressing. I really liked Martha and her wit. Pick!

BarbaraBB I liked this one a lot too. 5mo

This was hand sold to me by a bookseller when I told her I like good historical fiction but am tired of WWII and dual timelines. While this post Revolutionary War story centers around a midwife, it's the story of a family, a town, sexual assault, power, and home. Great characters, a compelling plot, and a beautifully written setting made this book a 5-star read for me. June #Bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

We are in the twilight years of a long love affair, and it has recently occurred to me that a day will come when one of us buries the other. But, I remind myself, that is the happy ending to a story like ours. It is a vow made and kept. It is the only acceptable outcome to a long and happy marriage, and I am determined not to fear that day, whenever it arrives. I am equally determined to soak up all the days between 📔❄️

This story is set in Maine and was inspired by the diary of an actual midwife (Martha Ballard) who practiced in the late 1700's. I thought it did a wonderful job illustrating the lives of women at the time and their lack of autonomy, as well as how the local midwife knew everyone's secrets. The book deals with rape and murder and is about love, loss and one woman's fight for justice. I really enjoyed it, and it will stick with me. 5/5 stars

I know it was loosely based on Martha Ballard's life and diaries, but I still think it was refreshing to read about a strong woman capable of standing up to hateful men and her husband who is strong enough to love her. Especially in the late 1700s. Trigger Warning: rape is all through the book

I enjoyed this story of the life of a midwife in the 1700‘s. It definitely held my attention. The story includes details of experiences of delivering babies but primarily focuses on Martha Ballard‘s pursuit of justice through the newly created legal system for a woman who was raped as well as working to hold a murderer (and all around bad guy) accountable for his deeds. This story was inspired by the journal written by Martha during that time.

I loved the strong sense of time and place in this novel - small town Maine in the late 1700s. This is one of those historical novels I‘m glad exists because it brought a historical figure to my notice. And I finished it because it‘s for book club. But there were no sentences than sang to me, and the characters didn‘t quite come to life as of their time. Not many anachronisms I could be sure of (notable exception- a counter in a kitchen, which would have had a table and perhaps other furniture, but nothing built in.) 👇🏻

Lcsmcat 👆🏻 Ballard fascinates me, but this author‘s version of her was too 21st century, and too perfect. Her worst trait is a temper she unleashes on the “bad guys.” And where Lawton could have used his experiences in the war to humanize and explain North, she used them only as proof he was a monster. A low 3 at best. But now I want to read the biography, 9mo

#Read2025

Finished this one yesterday, it‘s the 2nd of my March #Roll100 picks (#51 Any Library Book) & the 5th book from my #AuldLangSpine list from @JacqMac & I loved it! A historical mystery centered around a real-life midwife, Martha Ballard. I found the mystery gripping in how it unfolded & the look at midwifery in 1779 in Maine was interesting. The author‘s notes in the back about the choices she made in telling Martha‘s story were also ⬇️

DebinHawaii … absorbing. I found it sadly interesting just finishing it yesterday before reading chapters 5 & 6 in this month‘s #SheSaid pick (tagged below) on the entitlement of medical care & bodily control of women, just how much hasn‘t changed.🤬 An enthusiastic ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ it will go on my Best of 2025 list & I‘ll look for more of the author‘s books. Thanks to @JacqMac for the nudge to read it & @monalyisha for her excellent #AuldLangSpine matching. 🤗 (edited) 10mo
