Not Dead Yet: The Memoir
Not Dead Yet: The Memoir | Phil Collins
Phil Collins pulls no punches about himself, his life, or the ecstasy and heartbreak that s inspired his music. In his much-awaited memoir, "Not Dead Yet," he tells the story of his epic career, with an auspicious debut at age 11 in a crowd shot from the Beatles legendary film "A Hard Day s Night. "A drummer since almost before he could walk, Collins received on the job training in the seedy, thrilling bars and clubs of 1960s swinging London before finally landing the drum seat in Genesis. Soon, he would step into the spotlight on vocals after the departure of Peter Gabriel and begin to stockpile the songs that would rocket him to international fame with the release of "Face Value" and In the Air Tonight. Whether he s recalling jamming with Eric Clapton and Robert Plant, pulling together a big band fronted by Tony Bennett, or writing the music for Disney s smash-hit animated "Tarzan," Collins s storytelling chops never waver. And of course he answers the pressing question on everyone s mind: just what "does" Sussudio mean? "Not Dead Yet" is Phil Collins s candid, witty, unvarnished story of the songs and shows, the hits and pans, his marriages and divorces, the ascents to the top of the charts and into the tabloid headlines. As one of only three musicians to sell 100 million records both in a group and as a solo artist, Collins breathes rare air, but has never lost his touch at crafting songs from the heart that touch listeners around the globe. That same touch is on magnificent display here, especially as he unfolds his harrowing descent into darkness after his official retirement in 2007, and the profound, enduring love that helped save him. This is Phil Collins as you ve always known him, but also as you ve never heard him before."

Love a hotel bookshelf. Oddly enough, this one has 2 copies of Phil Collins's memoir. Is he popular with the French? 🤔
Fly home tomorrow.

BarbaraBB I hope you had a fab time. Safe travels 🤍 2y
BarbaraBB Oh and I can‘t imagine Phil Colllins being more popular in France than elsewhere 😉 2y

From an subscription email, I added this book to my TBR. Love me some Phil Collins and Genesis music! He even narrates the #Audiobook himself.

There's not much better to me than Phil Collins' music, but maybe it's his memoir read by Phil Collins himself. Very interesting to me to have him fill in the reasoning behind all his beautiful songs. Quite funny and also very sad at times when he could have made better decisions. But I am absolutely glad that I bought it on Audible so I can listen each year. He reminded me of so much music I had forgotten was important to me. Glad he's back.

WordWaller Oh my gosh I didn't even know about this!! 8y
SaraFair @WordWaller - I dated myself! But if you like his music, you would like this audiobook. His personality really comes out with his story. 8y

Listening to this, read by Collins himself! Things were decent until about disc 7 and now I'm getting a little annoyed with his actions. Still, fascinating to listen to him read his own story!

I am fascinated by the lives of musicians/songwriters. Although I wanted to smack Collins upside the head a few times, I did find his book compelling reading.

My review should be read with the understanding that I'm not Phil Collins fan. I don't dislike him, but I'm definitely not an enthusiast. While I found some of the stories Collins told interesting; I found that this memoir was quite a superficial narrative. It reads as a chronicle of events; lacking the reflection and deeper analysis which might have made it more engaging. I often found myself skimming. Interesting but not well executed.

The perfect weekend audiobook. I enjoyed learning more about Phil Collins.

StephBengtson I have the book I just need to read it! I love Phil Collins! 8y
BeckaroniAndCheese I love his music from the 80's but really didn't know anything about the man @StephBengtson. Aside from not being able to stay married for long, he has had a pretty fascinating career. 8y

I ❤Phil Collins!!! I loved his memoir and listening to it on audio was fantastic. I love his voice/accent. Phi Collins is also special to me as my mom and shared a ❤️ of his music, we went to his concert together in the early 90's, and I had lyrics engraved on her headstone. (My mom and I also shared a fascination with epitaphs.)

ValerieAndBooks That is neat, thanks for sharing! 8y
NatalieR @ValerieAndBooks Awe, thank you! 8y
Ellen Wow, I just Googled him the other day to see if he was still alive - apparently he gets that a lot! 8y

SaraFair @NatalieR - After listening to this via audiobook, I am busy rebuying all the music I used to have on tape. Loving it all over again. 8y
NatalieR @SaraFair That's great! I did the same thing! I just finished Bruce Springsteen's book and immediately went to iTunes. 😜🎼 8y

Irgendwie kann ich diese #biographie nicht lesen, ohne ständig ein Lied von #genesis oder #philcollins im Ohr zu haben 😂
Somehow I'm not able to read this #book without hearing Songs of Genesis or Phil Collins in my head 😂

This was a really quality autobiography!
Easy to read, almost always actually interesting, and really down to earth!
There were times I felt like it could have been more personal, but it's his choice how much he wants to share with us and I really enjoyed reading what we got!

JanuarieTimewalker13 @nrheckel this may not make sense unless you've read the book, but I definitely must read this book bc of My Best Friend's Exorcism...I would love to know if PC knows he's in that book! Lol... 8y
