Keanu Reeves Is Not In Love With You
Keanu Reeves Is Not In Love With You: The Murky World of Online Romance Fraud | Becky Holmes
7 posts | 4 read | 20 to read
Online romance fraud is a problem across the globe. It causes financial and emotional devastation, yet many people refuse to take it seriously. This is the story of one middle-aged woman in a cardigan determined to understand this growing phenomenon. No other woman has had so many online romances from Keanu Reeves to Brad Pitt to Prince William and Becky Holmes is a favourite among peacekeeping soldiers and oil rig workers who desperately need iTunes vouchers. By winding up scammers and investigating the truth behind their profiles, Becky shines a revealing, revolting and hilarious light on a very shady corner of the internet. Featuring first-hand accounts of victims, examples of scripts used by fraudsters, a look into the psychology of fraud and of course plenty of Beckys hysterical interactions with scammers, this is a must-read for anyone who needs a reminder that Keanu Reeves is NOT in love with them.

#Naturalitsy #HyggeHourReadathon

Spending my #HyggeHour on the couch & starting this library book which I am hoping is as funny as advertised. Also trying this local candy which is peppermint milk chocolate with pretzel crunch.

Feeling reluctant to start the week as it will be another busy one preparing to present to the board next week. I really would have liked another day off. Mondays come much too soon! 🥱😵😵‍💫

MemoirsForMe This book sound hilarious! I have a similar one on my Kindle. Wishing you a smooth and easy work week! 3w
AllDebooks Sorry, I saw Keanu and zoned out. #Swoon 😅🤪 3w

An easy, enjoyable listen - I think one that was better for being read by the author.

My #LibraryHaul from yesterday. I went in to pick up my hold on The Village Library Demon-Hunting Society & The Night Guest & God‘s Country ended up in my hands, followed by the tagged book which looks pretty funny. (I find online romance fraud pretty fascinating).

Finally my favorite librarian gave me the ARC of Smothermoss which she called weird & said she thought I might like it. Hmm… so what is she saying about me?
The book🐔🐔 wonder! 😆

AnnCrystal Weird is Cool 🆒😎👍💝...at least, that's what I tell myself 😉❣️. (edited) 1mo

New geranium!

Holmes‘ trolling of people trying to scam her was truly hilarious and worth the price of admission alone. But she also did a wonderfully compassionate job of sharing the stories of women who had been conned. I did not know people were murdered in Ghana and Nigeria to be used in dark magic rituals to increase scam yields or that in SE Asia people were held In indentured servitude carrying out scams. Almost too wild to be true!

Megabooks @Suet624 @Aimeesue I know! Definitely one of the most surprising books I‘ve read this year! 7mo

Y‘all…this is BY FAR the funniest book I‘ve read all year! If you are feeling down and need a laugh, the way she has included her word-for-word trolling of the scammers has me just rolling! So far 80 pages in, I highly recommend it.

LeahBergen Ooo, I may need this! 8mo
jlhammar Great title and cover. Reminds me of a podcast I recently listened to called Love Bombed. I‘m going to have to check this out! 7mo
BarbaraBB I might need this too! And I know an elderly lady who thought she‘s was having an online affair with Keanu Reeves. She even sent him the money to come and visit her… 🥲 7mo

Megabooks @LeahBergen I liked that it was funny, but she was also very serious and caring towards the victims she spoke to. 7mo
Megabooks @jlhammar All kinds of love bombing in these romance scams. It was a really interesting book! Worth reading for sure. 7mo
Megabooks @BarbaraBB That's terrible! Apparently he's the most commonly impersonated celeb because he's well known internationally but has no personal social media presence. 7mo

I started listening to this book on a whim, unsure if I‘d finish it. It wasn‘t long before I was cackling and completely hooked by the hilarious stories and over the top reverse-catfishing Becky Holmes uses on scammers. The oil rig worker who‘s in love with you in your DMs is desperate, not for your love but for your money. While this is humorous, Holmes gets serious with profiles of women affected by this and also the catfishers themselves.

slategreyskies Wow, this book looks so bizarre that it might actually be really good! 🤣 8mo
Chelsea.Poole @slategreyskies I was surprised at how much I ended up getting on with it! Funny but highlights real issues! 8mo
BarbaraBB I know an elder lady who thought Keanu Reeves‘s was in love with her… they texted non-stop, she thought, and it was a question of time until they‘d meet. She even sent him money to fly to the Netherlands 🥲 (edited) 8mo

slategreyskies @BarbaraBB When I worked at a store that had a Western Union, I got training on how to decline transactions that looked fraudulent. I had an elderly woman come in once wanting to send a large sum of money to Nigeria, and I told her that I wasn‘t allowed to do it, because it was against the rules. She didn‘t know specifics about the man or anything. She was really disappointed and sad, but her son (who‘d brought her in) was thankful. 😢 8mo
BarbaraBB @slategreyskies That is so sad! 8mo
Chelsea.Poole @BarbaraBB @slategreyskies both stories are sad! I have many myself from our library. One woman in particular has been sending money to her multiple “husbands” over the years. She refuses to listen to reason. At some point it becomes a denial issue, or I‘ve even known people who are so far in they don‘t even mind it being a scam because they‘re in love. 8mo
BarbaraBB These women must be so lonely. 8mo
Megabooks Of course we‘ve read the same semi-obscure book this month! 🫶🏻👯‍♀️ 7mo
Chelsea.Poole @Megabooks always twinning! 👯‍♀️ 📕 I really liked this one! I‘ve been recommending it IRL. 7mo

Online romance fraud has skyrocketed. From impersonating members of the armed forces to Hollywood stars, there's seemingly no stone the fraudsters will leave unturned. The author looks at the psychology behind the frauds, the kind of 'scripts' they use to play on their victims' emotions, & why it seems to be a crime that the victims feel reluctant to report. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf I knew I had to read this book as soon as I saw the cover. I follow the author on Twitter (sorry, can't get into calling it X) & I find her text conversations with these scammers funny, so I was looking forward to it. It mostly didn't disappoint.

Behind the humour though, there are very unfunny consequences for those taken in. I found it informative, mainly because I've never really had anything like this sent to me

OutsmartYourShelf (I wonder if it's because my social media is filled with football posts so they think I'm a bloke?!) & I've never really looked into it. It's sad but not surprising that UK anti-fraud law is trailing way behind when it comes to online crime & that actual support for victims is in short supply.

Overall, it may not be everyone's 'cup of tea' but it's definitely different. 4🌟

OutsmartYourShelf My thanks to #NetGalley & publishers, Unbound, for the opportunity to read an ARC.
