The Sins on Their Bones | Laura R. Samotin

Set in a Jewish folklore-inspired reimagining of 19th century Eastern Europe, this queer dark fantasy debut pits two estranged husbands and a daring spymaster on opposite sides of a civil war. Perfect for fans of Leigh Bardugo, C.S. Pacat, and Katherine Arden. Dimitri Alexeyev used to be the Tzar of Novo-Svitsevo. Now, he is merely a broken man, languishing in exile after losing a devastating civil war instigated by his estranged husband, Alexey Balakin. In hiding with what remains of his court, Dimitri and his spymaster, Vasily Sokolov, engineer a dangerous ruse. Vasily will sneak into Alexeys court under a false identity to gather information, paving the way for the usurpers downfall, while Dimitri finds a way to kill him for good. But stopping Alexey is not so easy as plotting to kill an ordinary man. Through a perversion of the Ludayzim religion that he terms the Holy Science, Alexey has died and resurrected himself in an immortal, indestructible bodyand now claims he is guided by the voice of God Himself. Able to summon forth creatures from the realm of demons, he seeks to build an army, turning Novo-Svitsevo into the greatest empire that history has ever seen. Dimitri is determined not to let Alexey corrupt his country, but saving Novo-Svitsevo and its people will mean forfeiting the soul of the husband he cant bring himself to forsakeor the spymaster hes come to love.

Pickpick

THE SINS ON THEIR BONES gives the reader a lot to admire, including a secondary world with shades of 19th century Russia, a magic system rooted in Jewish folklore, and a queer-accepting society. I enjoyed it very much, but I probably would‘ve loved it had there been a bit more depth to the characters‘ relationships and a few more chances for the reader to put things together for themself via context instead of direct revelation. #gaymay

I‘m dying to read an ARC on my new (-to-me) Kindle, but THE SINS ON THEIR BONES was only available to me as a PDF through the NetGalley reader and it expires soon, so here we go! It‘s very moreish so far, though there are a couple of issues that‘ve kept me really liking it instead of loving it. We‘ll see how it develops (and if it‘s a full story; at this point, it feels like it could lead to a cliffhanger).

I had to postpone my usual February plan to take the month off from American creators because I‘m still in the thick of my big X-Men catch-up and I didn‘t want to pause it for that long, but I‘m definitely going ahead with Gay May as scheduled! To that end, I‘ve started stockpiling queer books. WHAT A DESI GIRL WANTS showed up in a Little Free Library this morning and THE SINS ON THEIR BONES was too tempting on NetGalley. #gaymay
