Based on a real not-so-distant future possibility of a company trying to de-extinct Mammoths (Check out Colossal.com if you‘re interested); this crime novel was entertaining!
A murder happens at the famous site where you can view de-extinct species. Cash has her first high level assignment and uncovers a lot more than she bargained for.
As a geneticist, some of the science behind it wasn‘t explained exactly correctly, but still a fun read.
Lured by the author of one of my fav long standing series & the Jurassic Park similarities! Anytime I can get more of either, I‘m there!
A resort in Colorado where extinct animals are cloned back to life. Newlyweds are kidnapped & murdered. Agent Frankie Cash & the town sheriff are on the case! Who did it?
It feels possible. Scary!
I love the prehistoric life & a crime that needs solving! We need so much more of this!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2
79/150 While the big reveal was pretty obvious, the author still does a very good job of ratcheting up the levels of mystery and suspense leading up to the explanation of what's really behind the murders and the strange, half feral creatures roaming the forests. I thought the ending was a little rushed, too much running around, too many characters to keep track of as they ran off in different directions. 3.75/5
An exclusive resort in a remote Colorado valley offers scenic nature plus "de-extincted" megafauna like woolly mammoths and giant sloths. When newlywed hikers go missing, a CBI agent and local sheriff head the investigation into a strange case that only gets stranger. It's hard to say much more without spoilers, but this was a propulsive story that did not actually seem too far-fetched, which makes it all that much scarier. Not for the squeamish!
Just because you can do something doesn‘t mean that you should, is the theme of this novel, or at least it should be. This is a horrible lesson in just how we humans can out clever ourselves. Agent Cash and Sheriff Colcord are flawed but sympathetic protagonists and face impossible situations with intelligence and compassion. This novel will scare the hell out of you and the afterword proves that truth may be stranger than fiction. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Just as described, this book reads like an updated version of Michael Creighton‘s Jurassic Park. Set in a valley in Colorado, a park has been erected to show off de-extincted animals like mammoths. But all is not as it seems as Agent Cash & Sheriff Colcord soon discover.
#WorstRead2024 @CSeydel
I've read a lot in April. Not all of the books were good. None was abysmal, which is good actually. When choosing the Worst Read for April I went with the most disappointing book. Only to then realise, my March Worst Read was even more disappointing. So, here is the first third of the year reading disappointments summed up. 😁
Not saying it's a pan, but it's definitely not a pick.
The Colorado Rockies, a billionaire with a vision to de-extinct the large animals from the pleistocene period and making them the attraction of his lodge and camping resort. What could possibly go wrong?
If you liked Jurassic Park, think of this as the low budget version where two gruesome murders lead to an investigation with ice-age creatures in the background.⬇️

Of course, Mr Preston, of course.

De-extinction?!?! I‘m in! Already deeply invested in this novel, I can hardly wait for the rest of it. My imagination is running wild. What horrifying thrills await us? I love a good sneak preview! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

1) 🤔 not exactly most excited, but looking forward to: Extinction by Douglas Preston (Pub Day: 23 April)
2) Killing Time by Jodi Taylor (fifth Time Police book)
It‘s been a while since I‘ve read/listened to anything from Preston, but this reminded me of how much fun I always have with his writing! This standalone science thriller starts off with a grisly scene & missing honeymooners. They disappeared from the Erebus Resort, famous for the large mammals they have resurrected from extinction. The FBI & local authorities combine with Erebus security to solve a mystery that quickly gets more eerie & complex!
Douglas Preston is one of my favorite authors. Reading this, I was reminded of what a good author he is. The book was amazing, I was invested in the story from the beginning. Obviously there can be comparisons made between Extinction and Jurassic Park. Part mystery/police procedural, the CBI is brought in to investigate the murders of a young honeymoon couple. As the investigation continues, the findings become more and more bizarre.
