Sunshine: How One Camp Taught Me about Life, Death and Hope | Jarrett J. Krosoczka
16 posts | 10 read | 6 to read
The extraordinary -- and extraordinarily powerful -- follow-up to Hey, Kiddo. When Jarrett J. Krosoczka was in high school, he was part of a program that sent students to be counselors at a camp for seriously ill kids and their families. Going into it, Jarrett was worried: Wouldn't it be depressing, to be around kids facing such a serious struggle? Wouldn't it be grim? But instead of the shadow of death, Jarrett found something else at Camp Sunshine: the hope and determination that gets people through the most troubled of times. Not only was he subject to some of the usual rituals that come with being a camp counselor (wilderness challenges, spooky campfire stories, an extremely stinky mascot costume), but he also got a chance to meet some extraordinary kids facing extraordinary circumstances. He learned about the captivity of illness, for sure but he also learned about the freedom a safe space can bring. Now, in his follow-up to the National Book Award finalist Hey, Kiddo, Jarrett brings readers back to Camp Sunshine so we can meet the campers and fellow counselors who changed the course of his life.

This terrific graphic memoir is written from the point of view of a teenager who volunteers at a camp for kids with cancer and their families.

And there are letters in the back!

Really nice bit of character work here as the motley group of camp counsellors set off to kids cancer camp.

I adored this book. (Hey, Kiddo is amazing as well.) JJK is a sweetheart — a wonderful storyteller, artist, and human being. 💖

This was my December #DoubleSpin pick for #BookSpinBINGO.

I read a stack of great picture books this month, which reminds me: Goodreads dropped picture books from their readers‘ choice awards this year. I‘m not sad about that because they tended to have crappy picture books on the voting list anyway.

This a biography about a boy named Jarett. Jarett was in high school when he went to camp for the first time. When he learned that it was for seriously ill kids and families he thought it was going to be sad and overwhelming. He learned that it was a lot more than he expected. He learned more about different kids and their illnesses and how they live with it everyday. He became a safe person that kids could go to and tell their feelings to.

“The kids I met there weren't dying- they were living. Living life to its fullest.“ This quote made me think about how important it is to think about life as the glass is half full.

This book is a feel-good/coming-of-age novel. It talks about the sad parts of life and how these children and families fight through them to come out on the other end. I liked how the author used this book as a graphic novel, I think it added more dynamic to the story.

This book is about the author and how he worked at a summer camp called Camp Sunshine. The camp was specifically for children and families who have chronic illnesses. Originally the author thought it would be too depressing but he ended up really learning a lot from the camp.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Krosoczka follows up his National Book Award nominated memoir Hey, Kiddo with another stunner which, like the first one, exemplifies just how powerful & moving graphic novels (comics too) can be in the hands of a brilliant artist. Detailing his work as a volunteer & later counselor at camps for seriously ill children, & what that work has meant to him, this one had me teary before the title page. I‘m still teary… Highly recommended.

jlhammar Just picked-up from the library! Can‘t wait to start. I loved Hey, Kiddo. 2y

This powerful, tender, life-affirming graphic memoir from the author of Hey, Kiddo follows Jarrett J. Krosoczka as a high schooler on a trip volunteering at Camp Sunshine, a summer camp for seriously ill kids and their families, a week that changes his life forever. I‘m getting chills just reflecting on this beautiful book and that it‘s here for anyone who needs a reminder of the brevity of life, yes, but more, that its meaning lies in connection.

jlhammar I loved Hey, Kiddo. Looking forward to this! 2y
