Sundays: A Celebration of Breakfast and Family in 52 Essential Recipes: A Cookbook | Mark Pupo
45 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
A cookbook with a memoir at its heartabout breakfast, the joy of a father and son cooking together, and how we show love through food. Breakfast may be the most important meal of the day, but its also the most intimate and personal. Its when were in our pyjamas and with our families, not quite ready to face the world. Its what we crave when we want comfort and its the easiest way to turn us back into kids again. Mark Pupo got into the habit of preparing big breakfasts every Sunday with his neurodivergent kindergartener, Sam. Everything else in life was tough and complicated, but making breakfast together was weirdly easy. (It turned out Sam loved to crack eggs, and he was really good at it.) In the kitchen, the pressure was off and they had all the time in the world to goof around. This book is a record of that first year of a father and son cooking togetherof what became their weekend ritual. Filled with eye-catching illustrations and 52 recipes for a full year of weekend breakfasts, Sundays is a journey through Mark and Sams morning adventures. Starting out with simpler challenges, like Toast Soldiers and Almond Butter Overnight Oats, Mark then veers into his favourite inspired dishes, including Eggnog French Toast Bake, Pumpkin Spice Pancakes, Cheddar Polenta Cakes, and Saucy Poached Eggs with Feta. Mark also revisits his own childhood breakfast obsessions (Pop-Tarts, egg sandwiches, and the elusive perfect bagel, to name a few), and along the way explores the surprising origins of breakfast staples. By turns witty, charming, frank, and filled with delicious breakfast ideas, Sundays is for those who wish every morning began with a stack of pancakes. It is an infectious celebration of the most important meal of the day and the most important people in our lives.

I have a harder time sticking to a series in recent years & can take forever in between books. I do enjoy easy series like cozy mysteries or romance. The world-building fantasies though—I have to love the characters if I‘m going to tackle them. Also, I don‘t have to buy multiple books with stand alone.

I have been meaning to read more nonfiction! I think that will be one of my 2025 bookish goals!

#sundayfunday @BookmarkTavern

Aims42 Happy to offer suggestions it you need any 😊 I love mixing in some nonfiction in between lighter reads 3mo
Kshakal @Aims42 I would love that!! 3mo
Aims42 Off the top of my head, these were some of my favorites: “Girly Drinks” by Mallory O‘Meara, “The Bookshop: A History of the American Bookstore” by Evan Friss, “When Women Ran Fifth Avenue” by Julie Satow, “Sweet and Low” by Rich Cohen, and anything by Erik Larson! 3mo

No, but I often don‘t start a series until it is well-established. I am not one of these who are constantly ingesting new releases. I have a lot of book media and am aware of the trending titles, but I don‘t rush to pick them up. For example, I saw the juggernaut Fourth Wing all over the internet and while I did buy the book and the sequel, I still haven‘t started it. I plan to this summer, but other books‘ voices are louder! 😄

Just another Sunday morning cat in tree and dog on table. 🤔

I‘m just going to sit here and read. 😂

Happy Sunday!

Clare-Dragonfly Where is the cat? I thought I spotted a kitty face toward the top left, but on closer inspection it was not so. 13mo
IndoorDame I‘m stumped by the cat finding game too 😂 but your puppy is adorable!!!!! 13mo
JacqMac 😂 My cats are in the tree today, too. And there are no decorations left on the bottom. But I might have given up the battle. lol 13mo

I love middle grade fiction! I find middle grade novels to be so wholesome. I don‘t have to worry about a middle grade novel going too far and I often find them way more creative than adult fiction. I‘ve started leaning away from YA because I get tired of the tropes, but I find YA to have way more diversity than adult fiction. I get a good mix of middle grade and adult fiction with some YA once in a while.

#SundayFunday @BookmarkTavern

sherrisilvera There was no YA when I was a kid😁 1y
BookmarkTavern I do like that, about not worrying that a middle grade would go too far. Thanks for posting! 1y

When I was working at B&N, I frequently lied when customers asked me if I read and liked certain books they were thinking of buying. It was usually Colleen Hoover or Sarah J Maas, and it would‘ve been really awkward if I was honest and told them I despise Colleen Hoover and I‘ve tried Sarah J Maas and didn‘t like her. So I would say positive things instead and it made the customer happy with their choice 🤷🏻‍♀️#SundayFunday @ozma.of.oz

Prairiegirl_reading No I don‘t because I believe every reader is different. I wouldn‘t say what other people love is not good, just not for me. I‘ll never read Coho for example because I know it won‘t be to my taste, but if other people love it then good for them! 1y
RosePressedPages @Prairiegirl_reading I agree. But usually I saw customers wanting to be validated in their own reading choices and try to make a connection with you over a book they‘re interested in. I always liked seeing them feel happy about the book they decided to checkout, so I didn‘t have a problem pretending I really liked Sarah J Maas or Coho because it was encouraging reading 💗 if someone was checking out a book I loved, I let them know too 😊 1y
BookmarkTavern That‘s a kind thing to do. One of my favorite memories of my Barnes and Noble was the employee ringing me up gave me a high five over my copy of Nimona. Thanks for posting! 1y

I enjoy listening to memoirs but not fiction books… I enjoy when the author reads the memoir because then it is like I am having a conversation with them!

#sundayfunday @ozma.of.oz

JenReadsAlot I can only do nonfiction as well on audio. 2y
ItsAnotherJen I enjoy fiction on audio the best if I can start the book by reading the first part of it..then I can switch to the audio after I get into the story and become engaged. 2y
5feet.of.fury I used to have trouble concentrating on audiobooks and when I was trying to get used to it I would only do nonfiction. Comedian biography/memoirs I still feel like I have to do audio. My bf (very thoughtfully!) bought me one of Nick Offermans books because he knew I had liked another 1 -& I was like, screaming internally that it wasn‘t an audiobook. (I did read it, it was still pretty good 😂 but still) 2y
